Meanwhile, Bandish Bandits and Mismatched showcase the vibrant and colorful side of Rajasthan, which the people are used to seeing. Shehar Lakhot is yet another addition to the neo-noir crime drama genre that explores the marble mafia in the state of Rajasthan and the politics that looms around it. Created by Navdeep Singh and Devika Bhagat, the show is a Prime Video Original,...

He may have stunned the entire theatre fraternity with the portrayal of Hamlet in the Shakespearean tragedy as a student at the National School of Drama (Nsd) and later with his solo performances ‘An Evening with Piyush Mishra’. But for decades, the character’s ghost never left the actor – entering his personal space and clawing up to his very being.
“You cannot imagine the adulteration. A certain arrogance, complete self-indulgence, alcoholism… in my mind, I was the solo actor on life’s stage and everybody else was not supposed to take their eyes off my brilliance. Yes, I committed many mistakes. Confessing them was traumatic, but also cathartic,” he says with just the right dramatic pauses.

Senior actor-composer-singer-lyricist Piyush Mishra, who is known for his work in films like ‘Black Friday’, ‘Gulaal’, ‘Gangs of Wasseypur’ and ‘Pink’, recently shared a thought-provoking throwback video on his Instagram as India marked its 75th Independence Day on Monday.
The actor had earlier given a voice-over for an Independence Day special video for a footwear brand. The video takes a satirical route and questions the idea of freedom that people in contemporary times have in their minds.
It makes a valid point saying that in current times people not only take freedom for granted but also abuse their freedom and become judgemental towards their own countrymen. Piyush voices the video in his signature style where he says the words with piercing effect.
The video leaves the viewer with a sense of awareness with regard to not just the freedom but also the responsibilities and duties that come with it.

One Shot is a series that seeks to find an essence of cinema history in one single image of a movie. In Anurag Kashyap's socio-political drama Gulaal (2009), the stirring climactic lament "Duniya" encapsulates the filmmaker's disillusionment with the world: a world mired in deceit, greed, sectarianism, and megalomania; a world where goodness succumbs to the brute force of evil. This song sequence sees the naïve protagonist Dilip Singh (Raj Singh Chaudhary) slowly dying of his gunshot wound, culminating in the antagonist Karan (Aditya Srivastava) being declared the head of the secessionist Rajputana movement. The haunting crescendo by music composer-lyricist-singer Piyush Mishra underscores the close-up framing of Karan, whose devilish stare into the camera has been etched in the collective memory of Kashyap's admirers. Throughout his career, the rebellious auteur has had to bear criticism for exploring dark themes in his films, propagating cynicism, and indulging in downbeat endings. Like Dilip,...

Apparently, this untitled venture will be directed by debutant Raj Singh Chaudhary and it is being said that Raj, who was also an actor in Anurag's Gulaal, was keen on becoming a filmmaker because of which he received this opportunity. On the other hand, Imran Khan who did confirm that he has spoken to Raj regarding the same, also mentioned that he is yet to sign the film. When contacted, Imran responded saying, "I have not signed any film yet. I read Raj's script a few months ago but Anurag had asked him to make some changes. I am waiting to read the...

The 49th Karlovy Vary International Film Festival will pay tribute to Anurag Kashyap, along with Italian filmmaker Elio Petri and British director and artist Ben Rivers.
Director, screenwriter and producer Anurag Kashyap presented his ambitious gangster saga Gangs of Wasseypur at Cannes Film Festival in 2012. At the same festival last year the filmmaker presented his latest feature Ugly (2013).

Among the seven movies that he will personally introduce to audiences this year at Karlovy Vary are Dev.D (2009), Gulaal (2009), and That Girl in Yellow Boots (2010).
While Ben Rivers is a contemporary British filmmaker, Elio Petri (1929-1982) was a self-taught Italian filmmaker and intellectual who took the Palme d’Or at Cannes (The Working Class Goes to Heaven, 1971) and the Academy Award for Best Foreign Language Film (Investigation of a Citizen above Suspicion, 1969). Among all of India’s filmmakers today Anurag Kashyap is perhaps the only one whose films insist on being watched in a multiplex. Every other filmmaker’s efforts only merit DVD viewing. Since I have been so drawn to his films that I have journeyed to see them, I was quite excited when Gangs of Wasseypur was announced. I then took stock of what his films meant to me but, curiously enough, while Black Friday (2004) still largely remained in my memory, I retained only a few scattered images from Dev D (2009) and Gulaal (2009). The ‘avant-garde’ effort No Smoking (2007), of course, always struck me as babble but was there something lacking in the other two films that I recollected them so little?
Anurag Kashyap’s chief strength is his sharp eye for the milieu but his films also seem curiously blank – as if there was little else underneath surface. Since his style is so visceral,...
