The youngest son of an alcoholic former boxer returns home, where he's trained by his father for competition in a mixed martial arts tournament - a path that puts the fighter on a collision course with his estranged, older brother.
Frank Grillo based his character on famed MMA trainer Greg Jackson. Grillo and Joel Edgerton trained and lived with Jackson at his New Mexico gym during pre-production. All of Grillo's fight scene dialogue while "cornering" Edgerton was suggested by Jackson.
Tommy? Jesus! What are you doing here?
Tom Conlon: I was just passing through. I figured why not have a belt with the old man.
When Paddy tells Tommy that he'll leave the coffee out until 0500 hours (5:00am), a digital alarm clock in the background reveals that the time is already 5:23am. Paddy may have been speaking in reference to future awakenings but this doesn't sound like the case, however, Paddy says that climbing the stairs hurts his knees and so it's likely he doesn't go up there often, thus, the clock may still be set on summertime.
