Our House, which is based on the 2010 film Ghost From the Machine, which also screened at Fantasia back in the day, tells the story of Ethan (Thomas Mann), who is left dealing with enormous guilt caring for his younger siblings after his parents are killed in a car accident. Quitting a promising future in technology; by day he juggles the responsibilities of raising two kids; by night, he tinkers in the garage on an invention he hopes will change the world: a machine that can generate wireless electricity. After several attempts with an electro-magnetic device, he finally breaches the wall between the living and the dead. But gets more than he bargained for, however, when the device awakens the dead souls that haunt the house. As Ethan and his...

Being sealed off from society for hundreds of days can cause serious strains on the psyche, as evidenced in SyFy Films' 400 Days. With the new sci-fi thriller hitting theaters and VOD today, we caught up with writer/director Matt Osterman for our latest Q&A feature to discuss Dane Cook's improv on set, the influence of The Twilight Zone, and much more.
Thanks for taking the time to answer some questions for us, Matt. When did you first come up with the idea for 400 Days?
Matt Osterman: There was this amazing experiment in Russia a few years back called Mars500, where six astronauts went into a fake spaceship for 520 days (crazy, right?). They had a great online presence (posting videos, photos, etc.) and I was hooked. After the mission was over and they got out with their sanity supposedly still intact, I decided to take that idea and...

In terms of VOD offerings, 2016 is off to a quiet but stellar start as the genre titles arriving in January include a handful of noteworthy indie horror films that should help ease the post-holiday doldrums.
Two movies I enjoyed during the 2015 Los Angeles Film Festival—The Abandoned and Intruders—are both making their VOD debuts this month and Synchronicity, the neo-noir sci-fi thriller from Magnet Releasing, also arrives on January 22nd. The animated horror comedy Hell and Back is also coming to VOD this month and the new distro shingle SyFy Films is releasing 400 Days this January as well.
Condemned (Rlj Entertainment) – January 5th
In Condemned, fed up with her parents’ bickering, poor-little-rich-girl Maya (Dylan Penn) moves in with her boyfriend who is squatting in an old, condemned building on Manhattan’s Lower East Side. With neighbors that are meth heads, junkies and degenerates, this depraved hell hole is even...

Seeing the words “Syfy Films” at the beginning of a trailer does not inspire admiration if anything, it makes me cringe in advance of what's coming so you can imagine my surprise when, for some reason, I kept watching the trailer for 400 Days and discovered that it actually looks pretty great.
Written and directed by Matt Osterman of Ghost from the Machine fame, the movie starts Brandon Routh, Caity Lotz, Ben Feldman and Dane Cook as four astronauts who participate in a simulation designed to test the effects of deep space travel. Looking for some less mainstream sci-fi films in the year ahead? Then here's our list of 10 genre movies to look out for in 2015...
If you've been keeping an eye on next year's schedules, you'll probably already know about some of the major sci-fi films due for release in 2015. Ridley Scott will leave Matt Damon stranded on the red planet in The Martian. Colin Trevorrow will unleash a new breed of dinosaurs in Jurassic World. George Miller will be bringing us his belated Mad Max sequel Fury Road, Neill Blomkamp will show off his robot sci-fi comedy Chappie, and then, of course, there's Avengers: Age Of Ultron and Star Wars: The Force Awakens.
But what about the smaller genre films, the ones that don't have the marketing budget of, say, Disney's Tomorrowland, or the brand recognition of Star Wars? Those are the kinds of films we're focusing on here: the lower budget,...

We’ve learned that production is just now getting underway on 400 Days, a psychological sci-fi thriller that’s being led by Brandon Routh (Superman Returns) and Dane Cook (Dan In Real Life). Matt Osterman (Ghost From The Machine) penned the script and will also direct. Though 400 Days is a small project, early plot details definitely makes it sound like one worth keeping an eye on.

In July of 2010 the Fantasia Festival was proud to host the premiere of Matt Osterman's Phasma Ex Machina. A micro-budget science fiction / horror hybrid, Phasma revolves around a grief stricken engineering student who builds a strange machine in his garage - a machine that softens the barrier between our world and the afterlife. His goal was to bring back the ghosts of his parents and hopefully bring some closure but the result is far larger, the effects of the machine being felt throughout the entire neighborhood with spirits both welcome and not reappearing indiscriminately. It's a quality little film - and one now available on DVD as Ghost From The Machine - and Deadline have broken word that Universal is now backing a...

Another day, another remake. Deadline is reporting that Universal Pictures has acquired remake rights to Matt Osterman's Phasma Ex Machina, originally titled Ghost from the Machine, a Us short film that was released on DVD just last year. Instead of bringing on Osterman to direct, Universal is putting Gary Shore, an up-and-coming director behind The Cup of Tears (trailer for that), in the director's seat for the remake, along with Nathan Parker to write. If all goes as planned, this will be next for Shore before he moves onto any other projects, including a feature version of Cup of Tears. I've never heard of any of this, what gives? I haven't seen Phasma Ex Machina (or heard of it before today) but here's how Deadline describes it. The film "ponders the grey area between life and death and how science can bridge the two. Tucson and Phoenix: Prepare to be rocked, shocked and defiled. Blasting its way into its third — and biggest — year on Sept. 18-25, the Arizona Underground Film Festival is a cacophonous concoction of angry transsexuals, bumbling hit men, slacker superheroes, living dolls, aliens, dead hookers, adventure-seeking blondes and other crazies.
This year the fest is screening 30 feature films, some of which are making their U.S. and even world debuts. The opening night film is the U.S. premiere of the German hit man comedy Snowman’s Land, directed by Tomasz Thomson, while closing the fest is the controversial and violent A Serbian Film by Srdjan Spasojevic, which you have to be over-18 to get into.
Don’t worry, there’s plenty of homebrewed films as well, such as Dead Hooker in a Trunk by Jen Soska & Sylvia Soska; Nude Nuns With Big Guns by Joseph Guzman; 1,001 Ways to Enjoy the...

It's the first full day of spring, a time of rebirth and rejuvenation. It's also a time of another "re" word -- remake -- but I'm going to temporarily put that trend on hold (other than reminding you all to read Adam Gierasch's blog Creepy Mofos ... Creepy Movies, the first subject of which happens to be those pesky re-dos).
Instead, let's focus on some fresh, original projects born from fertile minds (fertility is, after all, a touchstone of the Vernal Equinox) that came to light during the week of March 15-21, 2009.
First up are Slaughter's Road and Demonology, a pair of upcoming films that Watchmen co-writer David Hayter will direct. The former is a spin on the werewolf subgenre starring Thomas Dekker (the new Punisher, Ray Stevenson (interview here), is reportedly in talks to appear as well *crosses fingers*). The latter is autobiographical in nature, relating to Hayter's experiences...
