The American Film Institute has announced that veteran director Francis Ford Coppola will receive its 50th Life Achievement Award. The honor has previously gone to filmmakers John Ford, William Wyler, Alfred Hitchcock, Billy Wilder, and Mike Nichols, among many others. This comes after Coppola won our poll as the director most deserving of the AFI’s honor, so our readers are bound to be happy.
Kathleen Kennedy, Chair of the AFI Board of Trustees, said in a statement, “Francis Ford Coppola is a peerless artist — one who has created seminal works in the canon of American film, and has also inspired generations of filmmakers who now embody his artistry and his independent spirit. Some audiences might have first spotted Matt Damon during a notable dinner scene in Donald Petrie's hit 1988 drama "Mystic Pizza." Thereafter, Damon turned up as an extra in "Field of Dreams" and as one of the many handsome students in the 1992 boarding school thriller "School Ties," both of them with his longtime friend and collaborator Ben Affleck. Damon went on to score some considerable screen time in Edward Zwick's "Courage Under Fire" before delivering his first lead performance in 1997 in Francis Ford Coppola's "The Rainmaker." That same year, Damon and Affleck became acclaimed Academy darlings for writing and starring in Gus Van Sant's "Good Will Hunting." The pair won Oscars for their screenplay and have both been major Hollywood players since.

It’s a unique year for sequels and prequels at the Oscars. There are three films whose preceding installments won five or more trophies from the academy: “Dune: Part II,” “Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga,” and “Gladiator II.” That opens the door for history to be made. If one or more of those films wins five times, it will be the first time in history that two films in the same franchise have won that many competitive prizes. For which film is that likeliest to happen? Scroll down to vote in our poll at the bottom of this post.

"Dune: Part Two" is one of the best films of 2024, a monumental achievement that seems like a shoo-in to be nominated for a swath of technical awards at the upcoming 97th Academy Awards. As of this writing, several screenings of the film are taking place throughout this week in Los Angeles, featuring director Denis Villeneuve giving Q&As after a number of them. One of these screenings includes a chat with Villeneuve and composer Hans Zimmer, moderated by the winner of Best Original Score for the 96th Academy Awards, Ludwig Göransson. It certainly seemed like Zimmer's work for "Dune: Part Two" was going to be a big part of the film's push at the Academy Awards.
Sadly, that part of the movie's awards campaign is now officially over -- at least when it comes to the Oscars specifically. According to Variety, Zimmer's score has been deemed not eligible for competition.

Peter Yates' "Bullitt" is one of the most stylish cop flicks ever made. Those multi-screen opening credits designed by the great Pablo Ferro, that jazzily urbane Lalo Schifren score, those wildly cool outfits donned by Steve McQueen at the height of his laconic sexiness (some inspired by the suits sported by real life detective Dave Toschi) –- it's a stone groove punctuated by spasms of violence and, of course, a raucous car chase through the hilly streets of San Francisco. It's so ineffably pleasurable, you don't mind that the narrative is a sketchily plotted afterthought. Who needs an intricately structured story when you're watching, as Quentin Tarantino wrote in his book "Cinema Speculation," "one of the best directed movies ever made?"
You throw on "Bullitt" for the 1968-ness of it all (it's the apolitical flip-side of the coin to Haskell Wexler's roiling docudrama "Medium Cool"), as well as the...

Al Pacino had quite the journey while filming The Godfather, and it wasn’t all smooth sailing. He opened up about a surprising injury he sustained on set that made him truly grateful. During an intense scene, things went a little sideways, leaving him with a reminder of just how intense the filming experience could get.

The legendary filmmaker and Megalopolis director visited the National Film and Television School (Nfts) in Beaconsfield, England, where he offered advice and insight to the audience — and discussed his career-defining moments — during a two-hour “In Conversation” event.
“Francis Ford Coppola’s visit this week gave Nfts students a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to learn from a true master of cinema,” said Nfts director Jon Wardle. “His body of work has inspired a generation of filmmakers.”
The open forum also allowed students to pose questions to Coppola, who is famed for works such as the Oscar-winning Godfather trilogy and Apocalypse Now.

It’s a jungle out there, and sometimes, it’s a fight for the last slice of pizza. Disney’s long-expected move to fold ABC Signature into 20th Television brings to an end the media conglom’s in-house TV studio, which started off as Touchstone Television a decade before Disney bought ABC, subsequently being renamed ABC Studios and more recently ABC Signature.
Launched in 1985, Touchstone TV’s first major hit was Golden Girls, which ran on NBC for seven seasons. Other successful series from that era include Blossom, also for NBC, and Home Improvement, Ellen and Boy Meets World for ABC.
In the first years after ABC became part of Disney, Touchstone Television continued to sell to all networks — which is how 20th Television operated for its entire run at Fox — with shows such as Felicity and Popular for the WB and The PJs for Fox/WB.
The studio gradually shifted its attention to its own network, supplying it with series such as Once And Again, My Wife And Kids,...

Thanks to the movies, superheroes are a cultural force. That glut hasn't exactly come with critical respect for the genre, though. On one hand, it's because these are innately simple stories for children. The other reason, I feel, is because the people who make these movies are embarrassed by that fact. Sometimes that manifests like in the "X-Men" films, where the movies run as far away from the comics as possible to "elevate" the story. Then there's the Marvel Cinematic Universe, which undercuts all its weirdness with "self-aware" humor about how none of its own world makes sense. Some rare filmmakers take superheroes seriously enough without trying to make them into something they're not (e.g. Sam Raimi) but it's rare.
The latest example of this is "The Penguin" showrunner Lauren LeFranc downplaying the series' Batman roots. No, this is a serious crime drama, hence why Oz (Colin Farrell) can't...

Francis Ford Coppola’s sci-fi epic “Megalopolis,” the director’s self-funded passion project, is tracking to a disappointing $5 million to $7 million box office debut.
The film, released by Lionsgate, is expected to play at 1,700 North American theaters in its opening weekend. A single-digit start would be underwhelming for a movie that cost above $100 million to produce.
Coppola has a lot riding on “Megalopolis” because the 85-year-old “Godfather” and “Apocalypse Now” director ended up independently financing the film for $120 million. After its Cannes Film Festival premiere, Lionsgate agreed to release and market the movie in exchange for a distribution fee.
“Megalopolis” is set in a futuristic America and follows an architect (Adam Driver) who clashes with the corrupt mayor (Giancarlo Esposito) in determining how to rebuild the metropolis of New Rome after a disaster. Reviews have been wildly divisive (it holds a 50% on Rotten Tomatoes), which could stoke interest in the film.

Robert De Niro has been one of Hollywood’s most critically and commercially successful actors. Thanks to his acting skills and collaborations with director Martin Scorsese, he has an extremely well-decorated filmography. But, when his Heat co-star Al Pacino chose Raging Bull as his favorite De Niro film, the choice surprised most fans.

Al Pacino and Robert De Niro stand out as one of the most iconic duos in Hollywood history. Their performances have gifted cinema with some of its most captivating all-time classic films in all of cinema history like Taxi Driver, Scarface, Raging Bull, and the Godfather series, with Heat being a true gem among them.

American Zoetrope's filmography is kind of mind-boggling. Co-founded by "Movie Brats" Francis Ford Coppola and George Lucas in 1969, the distributor and production company has stayed pretty true to its mission statement of backing not just projects by Coppola and his family, but also experimental and international cinema. The list of directors that've had American Zoetrope in their corner at some point or another is just as extraordinary. There's Jean-Luc Godard, Akira Kurosawa, Wim Wenders, Paul Schrader, Agnieszka Holland, Hans-Jürgen Syberberg, Godfrey Reggio, Carroll Ballard, and, of course, Tim Burton. Wait, what?
It's true: At the peak of his powers in the 1990s, the ringmaster of the "macabre funhouse" (as /Film's Bj Colangelo has aptly put it) teamed up with Coppola's American Zoetrope for 1999's "Sleepy Hollow."
When you think about it, it's not so surprising that Coppola got in on Burton's creep-tastical revamp of Washington Irving's 1820 short story "The Legend of Sleepy Hollow.

Gladiator II isn’t hitting theaters until November, but Ridley Scott has already begun planning out Gladiator 3.
In an interview with French magazine Première, Scott compared Gladiator II to The Godfather, with Paul Mescal’s Lucius Verus becoming a Michael Corleone-type character who reluctantly came to power. Gladiator 3 would then pick up the story of how Verus confronts the power struggles of imperial Rome.
“I’m already toying with the idea of Gladiator 3,” Scott said. “I’ve lit the fuse [for the sequel]… The ending of Gladiator II is reminiscent of The Godfather, with Michael Corleone ending up with a job he didn’t want, and wondering, ‘What now, Father, what do I do?’ So the next [film] will be about a man who doesn’t want to be where he is.”
The magazine later reached out to Mescal about Scott’s comments. Mescal said he was just told about the sequel recently but...

A trailer for Francis Ford Coppola’s Megalopolis was released last month but was pulled just hours later. It became apparent that the quotes from negative reviews of Coppola’s previous movies, such as The Godfather, Apocalypse Now, and Bram Stoker’s Dracula, had been faked. Lionsgate apologized, a longtime marketing consultant was fired, and the world kept on moving. While speaking with Entertainment Tonight at the Megalopolis premiere at the Toronto International Film Festival, Coppola took credit for the concept of using bad review quotes in the trailer but isn’t sure how it went so wrong.
“Well I know that there were bad reviews. I’m the one that who said there were bad reviews,” Coppola said. “But I don’t know. It was a mistake, an accident, I’m not sure what happened.“

Initially hailed as one of the most anticipated films of the year, Francis Ford Coppola’s Megalopolis is now facing a series of challenges that threaten the future of the project. The journey for the filmmaker’s dream project, in which he invested over $100 million, has been smooth, until recently.

Francis Ford Coppola’s long-in-the-works “Megalopolis” finally hits theaters next month. A new trailer, released earlier Wednesday by Lionsgate, takes a more combative approach to the film’s marketing.
At the beginning of the video, apparent quotes from reviews of previous Coppola masterpieces like “Apocalypse Now” and “The Godfather” flash on the screen. It’s a way of getting ahead of the divisive response to “Megalopolis,” which left critics bewildered when it screened at this year’s Cannes. It’s also pretty funny. The only problem… as New York Magazine critic Bilge Ebiri pointed out, the quotes are all made up.
The question remains: what happened, exactly?
“Lionsgate is immediately recalling our trailer for ‘Megalopolis,'” a Lionsgate spokesman told TheWrap after the company pulled the trailer down. “We offer our sincere apologies to the critics involved and to Francis Ford Coppola and American Zoetrope for this inexcusable error in our vetting process.

Lionsgate released the new trailer to Francis Ford Coppola’s self-financed epic “Megalopolis” on Wednesday ahead of its theatrical debut next month.
Written, produced and directed by Coppola, the movie is a decades-long passion project for the “Godfather” filmmaker. It was a big swing, for sure, requiring Coppola to sell off part of his winery to self-finance the film’s $120 million budget. Reviews out of the Cannes Film Festival were unkind, but this trailer uses the film’s divisiveness to its advantage, quoting critics who slammed Coppola’s previous films now considered masterpieces like “The Godfather,” “Apocalypse Now” and “Dracula.”
Adam Driver, Giancarlo Esposito, Nathalie Emmanuel, Aubrey Plaza, Shia Labeouf, Jon Voight, Jason Schwartzman and Grace VanderWaal star in the ambitious drama. “Megalopolis,” which is full of allusions to the Roman Empire and oversized visual flourishes, pits an idealistic architect (Driver) against a powerful politician (Esposito) for control of a futuristic city.

In the "Futurama" episode "The Luck of the Fryrish", Fry (Billy West) becomes increasingly concerned about his lack of good luck in the 31st century. He loses at horse races, loses his last dollar, and loses all his hair when he is struck by lightning. Fry figures that his lack of good luck stems from the fact that he lost a lucky talisman when he was a youth. Fry used to have a seven-leaf clover that brought him good fortune, and made him lucky enough to beat his jealous older brother Yancy (Tom Kenny) at basketball. Although Fry had been cryogenically frozen for 1,000 years, he figures his seven-leaf clover is still locked in his childhood safe, preserved in the subterranean ruins of old New York. Into the sewers he must go.

Nicolas Cage has always had a soft spot for devils and tragedies. The actor’s work has always veered far from the mainstream Hollywood recipe, often encroaching into territories that, for the lack of a better word, can only be labeled as weird. Ironically, Cage built a reputation out of his eccentricities, making his roles work out spectacularly in his favor.

Through the years, Cage has established himself as an unimpeachable figure on the fringes of Hollywood, an A-lister by the power of his dramatic work and yet ridiculous enough to be remembered more for his role in the 27% rated Ghost Rider than the 97% rated Pig. It is his work in the expansion of the comic book fantasy that makes him a living legend to this day.

Ever since he re-edited the first two “Godfather” movies into a “novel for television” in 1977, Francis Ford Coppola has obsessively returned to his past works, creating alternate versions of “Apocalypse Now,” “One From the Heart,” “The Outsiders,” “The Cotton Club,” and “The Godfather Part III.” For the 50th anniversary of his thriller “The Conversation,” Coppola has supervised a beautiful new 4K restoration that Rialto Pictures is releasing in theaters. This time, however, there was no tinkering with the original cut — this is the same “Conversation” that audiences saw in 1974, just looking and sounding the best that it ever has.
“Francis always felt this film was perfect as it is,” film archivist and restoration supervisor James Mockoski told IndieWire. “He’s very comfortable with the work he and [editor and sound designer] Walter Murch did in 1974.” To that end, restoring “The Conversation” was a simpler process than the work Mockoski undertook on “Apocalypse Now,” where...

While a sequel to 2019’s “Joker” wasn’t a foregone conclusion until the film passed $1 billion at the box office, director Todd Phillips and star Joaquin Phoenix were making plans for a follow-up before they even wrapped production. “Joker: Folie à Deux” is set to premiere at Venice Film Festival and release this upcoming October. It features the return of Phillips and Phoenix, as well as the inclusion of Lady Gaga as Harley Quinn, plus a new angle that expands Joker’s repertoire: It’s a musical. In a recent interview with Empire, Phillips and Phoenix explain why they chose to make such a distinct genre choice with this latest installment and other options that were also on the table.
“Joaquin and I talked about another one the whole time while we were making the first movie, just because we love the character,” Phillips said. “We were obsessed with Arthur.

DC’s Joker has been through the ringer ever since making his debut more than 80 years ago. Even on the small and big screens, the character has encountered his share of adventures, exploits and sheer menace. And it’s all about to evolve like never before. Many have argued that 2019’s Joker should have been a standalone film, but even those who welcomed a sequel never would have anticipated that it would be a musical. But that’s just where Folie à Deux will next take the Clown Prince of Crime. So, where else have Todd Phillips and Joaquin Phoenix envisioned Arthur Fleck?
Todd Phillips and Joaquin Phoenix were so enamored with Joker that they immediately started kicking around ideas for a sequel on the set of the first one. As Phillips told Empire, “Joaquin and I talked about another one the whole time while we were making the first movie,...

A handful of new Joker: Folie À Deux stills from the latest Empire Magazine have found their way online and they show the Clown Prince of Crime (Arthur Fleck) and Harley Quinn (Lee) in what looks like a pivotal courtroom scene.
We'd imagine Arthur Fleck is answering for gunning down Murray Franklin and inciting the riots which resulted in the deaths of Thomas and Martha Wayne.
There's also a shot of Arthur and Lee during what may be an attempted breakout from Arkham Asylum along with Joker dancing his way through the institution as Brendan Gleeson's unnamed guard watches on.
"Joaquin and I talked about another one the whole time while we were making the first movie, just because we love the character," director Todd Phillips recently said. "We were obsessed with Arthur. We would almost joke about it: 'Oh, we should take Arthur and we should do this.

Paul Feig is simply telling “A Simple Favor” fans that their big-screen sequel moment might still be on the horizon.
Feig’s sequel to his beloved 2018 film starring Blake Lively and Anna Kendrick was first announced in March 2024 as a Prime Video streaming-only release. The original, Lionsgate-distributed film became an audience success, grossing $97 million globally off a $20 million budget.
According to Feig, though, a theatrical premiere is still the goal.
“Well, we don’t know [if it will only be streaming],” Feig told IndieWire while promoting the upcoming action comedy film “Jackpot!”. “There’s a chance it could be in theaters. I think [streaming is] the path it’s on, but you never know.”
He added, “Never say never, because I’m a big theater guy. But I love being on streamers, too. I just love being able to make movies.”
“A Simple Favor 2” marks the return of Lively and Kendrick as neighbors who seem to keep getting entangled in whodunits.

As if Todd Phillips and Joaquin Phoenix’s take on the Joker wasn’t already intriguing enough, the filmmaker and star are taking a considerable creative swing with sequel Joker: Folie À Deux – stuffing their follow-up film with song-and-dance numbers as Phoenix’s Arthur Fleck forms a romantic connection with Lady Gaga’s Harley ‘Lee’ Quinzel. But as unusual a combination as it might seen, it came out of a playfulness that the pair established while making the first Joker – feeling out the tone and the character, and imagining what might come next.
As Phillips tells Empire, conversations about how Arthur Fleck might fare in other scenarios were rife on Joker. “Joaquin and I talked about another one the whole time while we were making the first movie, just because we love the character,” he says. “We were obsessed with Arthur. Al Pacino got his breakout role as Michael Corleone in Francis Ford Coppola’s The Godfather. The actor got an Oscar nomination for his compelling performance in the film. The actor reprised the role in the sequels The Godfather Part II and The Godfather Part III. While audiences still love the trilogy as a whole, they consider the first film to be the best film among the three.

Pacino got to share screen space opposite Marlon Brando who played Michael’s father, Vito Corleone. However, that combo almost didn’t happen as another bonafide actor was first attached to the role of Michael. Jack Nicholson turned down The Godfather in favor of other projects as he found them more interesting than Coppola’s film.

The ever-bubbling cauldron of Hollywood gossip has concocted a scandalous bit of news involving Francis Ford Coppola, and the acclaimed filmmaker has raised more than a few eyebrows.

Reports have trickled in about the Academy Award-winning filmmaker’s questionable behavior with women on the set of his latest venture, Megalopolis. And with the film merely a couple of months away from its theatrical premiere, this certainly makes things complicated, to say the least.
Francis Ford Coppola’s “Unpleasant” Conduct Goes Viral
Earlier this year, a report via The Guardian shed light on some disconcerting information about Francis Ford Coppola’s behavior on the set of Megalopolis, a forthcoming sci-fi drama written, helmed, and produced by him.
A crew member told the outlet that Coppola, 85, made female extras – who happened to be topless – on the set uncomfortable by allegedly kissing them.

The stories of messy production schedules are not new in Hollywood. Over the years, many movies have seen an arduous filming process where everything goes South. Such a film was the 1996 sci-fi horror, The Island of Dr. Moreau, inspired by the H.G. Wells novel and starring Marlon Brando and Val Kilmer. From the very start, it was a cursed project that hardly went well for anybody on set.

Francis Ford Coppola’s vision for The Godfather Part II nearly derailed before it even began, thanks to an audacious demand. He famously insisted on an outlandish condition that left many stunned: he refused to direct the film unless he was granted complete creative freedom and control over the story’s direction.

A few months back, the producers of The Simpsons were confused when they heard Hank Azaria’s latest batch of voice-acting recordings. For 36 years, he’s brought to life a substantial chunk of Springfield’s animated population, from Chief Wiggum to Comic Book Guy to Moe the bartender. Now, though, all of those guys were sounding kind of… hoarse. Azaria knew exactly what was wrong, but kept his explanation vague. “I’m working on a thing,” he said, and eventually re-recorded some of the performances.

Created and illustrated by Amazing Ameziane, Don Coppola is the second installment in the author's Cine Trilogy books, illustrating the behind-the-scenes stories of some of Hollywood's biggest hits. In the 1970s, American films underwent a massive shift, thanks to a new generation of talent infiltrating the business. Filmmakers like Martin Scorsese, Steven Spielberg, and Brian De Palma introduced a new, more energetic language into films, largely thanks to their studious backgrounds studying movies and reading the essays of Jean-Luc Godard and François Truffaut; this generation of filmmakers is traditionally called the Film School Generation. These artists tended to look after each other, seemingly understanding their mutual unspoken goal of revolutionizing movies and exploring the limits of what the medium was capable of.
Two Film School Generation directors once entered an alliance one might not expect. Francis Ford Coppola had already won many, many Oscars for his "Godfather" movies and for "The Conversation," making him a legitimate Hollywood darling. George Lucas, meanwhile, rewrote the language of the Hollywood blockbuster with "Star Wars" in 1977. Aesthetically, the two filmmakers could not have been more different,...

This weekend sees the release of a brand new film from an acclaimed director with an all-star cast that’s a cinematic “call-back” to a genre that’s gone Awol from the multiplexes and even the drive-ins (still enjoying a pandemic “bump) for the last few decades. And no, I’m not talking about the Western, which gallops back with Kevin Costner in the saddle next week. Well, there are a few comparisons, though these flicks began in the fifties and were an exploitation staple (a fave of the “passion pit”) into the swingin’ 70s. Going for more speed than the “oaters” were the “motorcycle gang” action epics, which have played a big role in the futuristic world of Mad Max and Furioisa. Now, this flick has those elements, but it’s more of a historical overview following some guys, and a few gals, who really thought of themselves as...
