Later this month I will begin my annual coverage of the Tribeca Film Festival but this post is actually about the only other festival I attend every year. I am of course talking about the Orlando Film Festival. And truth be told, if I could only pick one, I’d go with Off every time. Their 2013 Call For Entries just opened up and I urge any filmmakers ready to hit the festival circuit to Submit Now.
My love for Off dates back to when my first feature, Stuck Like Chuck, screened in 2009. That led to the festival’s creation of the Jerry Cavallaro Indie Spirit Award and I’ve been going back ever since to hand it out. In 2010 & 2011, I brought Nic Baisley from FilmSnobbery.com along to help cover the festival. In 2012 they debuted my second feature, Nic & Jerry Get Off, which as you can tell by the title is a gay porno.

Today was a fairly solitary experience at Tribeca. No industry cocktails or drinks with filmmakers. Just 3 films, a few press lounge pitstops for free Magnum ice cream and a few moments of conversation with Jeremy Wein from ThisMyShow.net.
Any Day Now may have a story that seems fitting for a Lifetime Movie of the Week but that doesn.t change the fact that it is a incredibly well crafted film full of surprisingly powerful performances. Despite being set in the late 70s, it shares an important message that is still relevant today. The film never feels too heavy-handed and has some funny comedic beats sprinkled throughout. While it didn.t get my tear ducts flowing, quite a few people left the theater with tissues in hand so it appears I was not the only one moved by it. With less than 5 minutes until my next screening, I went straight to the next film.

Thursday was my first day at the 2012 Tribeca Film Festival. After passing by the location twice, I finally found the fairly well hidden Tribeca Cadillac Press Lounge. I quickly checked in with the very friendly Tribeca staff. Despite the time, I went on to enjoy one of my favorite perks of the festival: Magnum Ice Cream. After killing a few minutes flipping through the press & industry film guide, I made my way over to the Clearview Cinemas Chelsea for my first screening.
Side By Side is a serious documentary on the film vs. digital debate hosted by Keanu Reeves. Yes, seriously. Even more shocking; how thoroughly entertaining and informative of a doc it is. I am not quite sure what kind of release this film will eventually get but it is highly recommended for anyone even remotely interested in filmmaking or technology.

We here at Wamg are massive fans of Kevin Smith. Out of all of us, I’m definitely the biggest. Don’t believe me? Here’s the last article I posted on this site – 37 Reasons (in a row) Why Kevin Smith Should Present Stuck Like Chuck. As the title suggests, it is a list of 37 reasons why the new label created by Smodcast Pictures & Phase 4 Films should release my no-budget directorial debut. While caked in self-promotion, the article is fairly light-hearted and actually does offer some insights into the world of indie film. The day after I posted it, I received an email from Phase 4 requesting a screener. Needless to say, I was ecstatic. I immediately sent a DVD their way and have been playing the waiting game since.
And with that bit of backstory established, we can move on to the meat of the article…

In 2005 I waited over 5 hours on line in Red Bank, NJ to meet Kevin Smith. Not only did he sign my merch but he also spent a good 30 seconds trying to carefully remove a price sticker from my DVD slipcover. It amazed me that he cared about something so insignificant but it also perfectly illustrated just how much he cares about his fans. This actually calmed my nerves enough to work up the courage to ask Kevin for advice. He offered up a nugget of wisdom that changed my life forever.

As I left the Javits Center tonight, I realized that I did not have anything to eat or drink in nearly 10 hours. That just goes to show you how time seems to get away from you at the New York Comic Con. It also explains why I did not get to do nearly as much as I planned for the day.
I arrived at Nycc about 2 hours after it officially opened and I was off to a good start with absolutely no wait for press check-in. I thought I knew what to expect since I attended (and Covered) NY Comic Con in 2009. The first thing I realized walking onto the show floor was just how massive this event has become. It has expanded to take up pretty much the entire Javits Center.
Unfortunately, it seems like the film presence at the festival has not increased much. I was surprised by...

New York Comic Con officially kicked off yesterday for press, professionals and anyone with a 4-day pass. In a few hours I will be heading to the Javits Center to attend the first full day of the convention. Contrary to the event name, Nycc has a lot more to offer than just comics. Below are just a few of the movie / TV related panels, screenings, guests and booths that we recommend checking out. Be sure to keep checking back on Wamg for more Nycc coverage. And follow me on twitter (@GetStuck) for some tweets and pics from the show floor.

Happy Midweek, Readers!Last weekend I took a sojourn to Los Angeles to cover an upcoming drama for the site. My coverage will be swinging around as this movie comes close to release, but for those of us in the covering-flicks-biz: summer is closing off fast.Sure, the first thing I'm going to reccommend this week is over 100 issues of a comic book, and that might give you the idea that you have some idle time before the autumn entertainment season, and maybe you do.Don't get too comfortable, though. I suggest you let your mind rot for about one or two more weeks (Labor Day weekend is traditionally a "stop wearing white," "stop being your stupid summer self" weekend anyway), then we get to jump into new seasons of good TV shows and smaller films that can afford to put a character front-and-center for two hours. It's not that...

Back in the late 80s and early 90s Diy filmmaking left the underground scene and entered the larger independent circuit at festivals where films such as Richard Linklater's Slacker and Kevin Smith's Clerks found studio support. Now In the age of Youtube, Diy has gone back to those underground roots albeit on the most public stage there is... the web. If you're able to get past the student trappings of Stuck Like Chuck I think you'll will find an earnest, well-acted little feature made by a dedicated, small cast and yes, once student, still tenacious filmmaker, Jerry Cavallaro. The film plays right to the film geek's heart in a way that's reminiscent of Smith's early films, and is currently available in it's entirety on the...

Although I don.t get to contribute nearly as much as I.d like to, I have been a part of Wamg for almost 3 years now. During that time, one film that I always liked to talk about was Stuck Like Chuck and the reason why is simple. It is an awesome film. and I also happen to be the writer & director. In the past, I.ve posted stories about new trailers and festival screenings. Our very own Travis Keune even wrote a fantastic (and non-biased) review that you can read Right Here. But this news is much bigger.
I.m very excited to let you all know that starting August 17th, Stuck Like Chuck will be available to watch for free. Free streaming. Free download. Free. It will launch on StuckLikeChuck.com but the player is embeddable so hopefully it will pop up on websites and blogs all over.

I want to start off by apologizing for the delay in my coverage. I originally planned to do daily recaps from each day at the festival but my 90-minute commute to and from the festival quickly killed that idea. Below is a recap of my experience at the 2011 Tribeca Film Festival so far.
Thursday April 21
My first day at the festival didn.t start off with a bang. I planned on attending the press screening of The Bang Bang Club but just couldn.t get to the festival in time. Instead I picked up my press badge and decided to check out the complimentary snack area. I opted for a breakfast ice cream bar courtesy of Magnum Ice Cream. Free Ice Cream for breakfast? Yes, I am living the dream.
Following my deliciously inappropriate breakfast, I decided to canvas the press lounge and theater to see what kind of promo materials I could find.

1 year ago I attended the best festival I have ever been to as a filmmaker. All the movies were free. The location was beautiful. The people were amazing. And apparently I inspired them to create an Independent Spirit Award just to give to me.
Well the Orlando Film Festival is back and it kicks off Wednesday November 3rd at the Plaza Cinema Café in Downtown Orlando. While I won.t be screening anything at the festival, I will still be on hand checking out some films and promoting my own. I will also be handing out the Independent Spirit Award, which has been named after me this year.
The festival runs from Wednesday November 3rd through Sunday November 7th. All the film screenings are free but you must get a ticket for each at the booth in front of the theater. The Plaza Cinema Café is located at 155 South Orange...

I can't imagine a tougher route to take into the world of feature filmmaking than comedies. There's always a market for low-budget horror or sci-fi movies. There are plenty of people who love pretentious, minimalist dramas filled with shots of people brooding under harsh lighting. There are even groups of people who eat up terrible, no-budget action movies. There really aren't that many people who are clamoring for unfunny comedies, though.
It should go without saying, but the success of a comedy relies entirely on the strength of its humor. Sure, the other fundamentals of filmmaking are important, but if a comedy just flat out isn't funny, it's pretty much dead on arrival. That's why I admire any aspiring filmmaker who opts to make their inroads to the industry via comedy. Really, there aren't that many of those inroads to take these days. You can either do the Kevin Smith...

As some of you know, in addition to occasionally contributing to Wamg I am a filmmaker myself. My first feature is a comedy called Stuck Like Chuck, which Travis reviewed last year. Since then, the film has played several festivals and even won a few awards, including Audience Choice Comedy at Siny and an Indie Spirit Award in Orlando. It is set to be released on DVD and digitally at the end of the year but you can get a special signed & numbered .official bootleg. DVD right now. They are only available until July 31st and all of the money raised will go towards making my next film!
So what is the next film? Stuck Like Chuck Too. No it is not a sequel but a fictional retelling of my experiences on the festival circuit with my first feature. Think of it as Curb Your Enthusiasm if Larry David was a 21 year old indie filmmaker.

One of the best things about writing for this site is getting to meet some really awesome people. I first spoke with Dan Fogler back at Tribeca when he was promoting his insane horror-comedy ‘Hysterical Psycho’. I met up with him again in June to talk more about the film but we unfortunately had to cut the interview short. We finally met up late last week to finish it up. I filmed over 90 minutes and still have a ton of great stuff to edit but I wanted to post some stuff now.
In the first video, Dan has a special introduction for our site and then announces some big news regarding ‘Hysterical Psycho’. (Spoiler: It’s coming to theaters!) The second video kills the rumor that he plans to fill John Candy’s shoes in the supposed remake of ‘Uncle Buck’. The third video is all about some more films...

With 22 emmy nominations for 30 Rock, I thought now would be the perfect time to show Tina Fey just how much we love her. Sure I could have written a nice article about how awesome she is, but instead I decided to release a clip from my film ‘Stuck Like Chuck’, which I have affectionately dubbed “The Tina Fey Scene”. In this scene, Rob (Patrick McColley) makes Charlie (Joe Moran) realize just how much he loves Juliet (Jocelyn DeBoer), by using Tina Fey as an example.
This is not the full scene from the film because I did not want to give too much away, but it does give you a good feel for the film. This clip may also be good luck for Tina Fey (and everyone else with the show) since my film won the Audience Choice Comedy award at the Siny Film festival last month. This is the...
