With both The Hatton Garden Job in UK cinemas now, and We Still Steal the Old Way available on DVD from today, I thought i’d take a look at my favourite Top Five Heist/Crime Caper Movies… In order (for a change) they are:
5) In Security
In Security tells the story of best friends Kevin and Bruce, who are co-owners of a failing home security company in a town with no crime. As a last ditch effort to drum up some business, they start robbing the neighbors to instill fear and create a need for their services but bullets fly when they unwittingly rob the wrong guy – a suburban drug lord with a penchant for kitchen gadgets.
It’s fair to say I love a good goofball crime caper, but In Security however has much more than being just a “crime caper” going for it. For one it stars one of my favourite actors,...

With movies like the revenge-via-circular-saw High Tension and the skin-shredding Piranha remake, director Alexandre Aja has memorably dunked his characters in the blood bucket. But Aja’s next project, an adaptation of The 9th Life of Louis Drax, is more a supernatural thriller than a blood-and-bones picture, and principal photography on the film has now begun.
“Vancouver and London, October 27, 2014 – Miramax, the global film and television producer and distributor, along with the film’s producers AntColony Films and Brightlight Pictures announced today the start of principal photography on the supernatural thriller The 9th Life of Louis Drax starring Jamie Dornan (Fifty Shades of Grey, The Fall), Aaron Paul (Breaking Bad, Need for Speed, Triple Nine) and Sarah Gadon (Dracula Untold, The Amazing Spider-man 2).
Joining Dornan, Paul and Gadon in supporting roles are Oliver Platt (X-Men: First Class, Chef, Frost/Nixon) playing Louis Drax’s psychologist, Dr. Perez; Molly Parker (House of Cards,...

We’ve been keeping you apprised of the casting news for upcoming Syfy TV series Defiance, and we now happily add Graham Greene (Northern Exposure, The Green Mile, Wolf Lake) to the list. I’ve loved him since he was a resident of Cicely, but I’m pretty sure that Defiance will be absolutely nothing like that quirky little town in Alaska. Here’s Syfy‘s press release:
Oscar Nominee Graham Greene Joins The Cast Of Syfy’S Series Defiance
New York – March 27, 2012 – Syfy has announced that Graham Greene (Dances with Wolves) will join the cast of its upcoming drama series Defiance. Greene will portray Rafe McCawley, a self-made success who owns and operates the largest mine in the territory. However, Rafe’s status as the richest and most powerful human in the town of Defiance comes with a price, as he struggles to navigate both familial and political alliances...

Nothing ruins a cottage weekend like blood-thirsty sharks.
Especially when they start popping up in a saltwater lake and taking greedy bites out of your friends. But that's just what happens to the unsuspecting college kids in Shark Night 3D, and when getting off the island proves to be nearly impossible, they have to fight for their lives against some pretty terrifying predators.
We recently sat down with the film's two leads, Sara Paxton (Aquamarine, The Innkeepers) and Canada's Dustin Milligan (Gunless, "90210") at Toronto's Polson Pier, to chat about spending their summer punching sharks, driving speedboats and acting like action stars.

What better way to celebrate Canada Day than with the release of a movie about life in the Canadian outback before the turn of the century and The Mountie looks like a low-key western (it's a far cry from Paul Gross. Gunless) capable of doing just that.
Co-written and directed by Wyeth Clarkson, he made a bit of a splash with 2006's Sk8 Life, the film stars Andrew W. Walker as Wade Grayling, a lone Mountie who has rolled into a town in the Yukon Territory to clean up the crime and corruption brewing behind closed doors (or in this case, inside tents). The movie also stars the talented Jessica Paré who some may recognize from her recent role on TV.s "Mad Men."
I'm not a huge fan of the title (I prefer the film's original title of Way of the West) but the trailer looks promising. It's adequately...

After the war drama Passchendaele, Paul Gross comes up with another populist blockbuster. While some may find Gunless funny, Paul Gross's latest action film is also a little bit mindless. That's too bad, because Canada's own conquest of the West is replete with interesting stories to tell.
So, "once upon a time... in the North", a severely wounded American gunslinger rides into a small Canadian frontier town after he had been involved in a confrontation. Before he can leave the town, the Montana Kid (Paul Gross) must wait for the local Chinese seamstress to fix his clothes. In the meantime, he borrows some Chinese clothes. As for the local blacksmith (Tyler Mane), after he had taken care of the Kid's horse, he called the Kid a "common". Provoked, the Montana Kid defies the blacksmith into a duel.
Unfortunately, the only gun available in the town belongs to Jane Taylor...

Do they make ’em all so amazing up in Canada? Cuz if there’s more like Paul Gross up north, I’m on my way... That one above is from H20. This one below is from Passchendaele. A little while back I wrote an article about the poster release for the upcoming film Repeaters, which is premiering at Tiff 2010. Well tonight, Hitflix has premiered the trailer for this darker version of Groundhog Day.
The trailer, embedded below, is fascinating and much more fast paced than I thought it would be. I’m actually excited now because the brief synopsis I posted in the other article didn’t really do much in terms of enticement but after watching the trailer everything has changed.
The trailer doesn’t exactly give us a lot in terms of where the characters are or why they are there, but it does give us some insight in terms of some of the struggles they encounter, what they do with themselves, and how the repetition of the same day is affecting them personally.
The best thing to do is to read the synopsis first,...

Like Westerns? Like Paul Gross? Like Westerns starring Paul Gross? Then you’ll love “Gunless”, Paul Gross’ new Western comedy that has him playing a notorious American gunfighter name The Montana Kid. When we first meet him, the Kid (real name Sean) is unconscious and being carried on his saddle by his trusty horse to a small Canadian town with a hangman’s noose still comfortably around his neck. It seems our hero ran across a couple of nasty fellows determined to collect the bounty on his head, but as luck would have it, the bad guys were amateurs and Sean managed to escape, though just barely. Alas, the bad guys, led by a mean Sob name Cutler (Callum Keith Rennie) are still on his tail, and are determined to finish the job even if they have to track him to Canada to do it. Now trapped in Canada with a bullet in his ass,...

Repeaters, a film premiering at the Toronto International Film Festival, has just released its first poster in anticipation for its worldwide debut.
The film, which is directed by Canadian Carl Bessai (Severed), has been described as a dark Groundhog day except instead of it being Groundhog day it is actually just one of the most miserable days of your life.
The Tiff film description:
Veteran director Carl Bessai returns with a tense thriller that follows three young addicts in a rehabilitation centre. Each day they live the same events over and over – a situation each responds to in radically different ways.
The film stars Dustin Milligan (Gunless), Amanda Crew (Charlie St. Cloud), and Richard de Klerk (Bang Bang You’re Dead).
While the poster doesn’t really tell you too much I still think its color use is pretty cool, specifically the blood red. Other than that I think it...

Yesterday, The Cultural Post revealed the first production images of the upcoming western comedy Gunless. Now, that we all have an idea about how the film's story looks like, let's meet the leading members of the film's cast.
Paul Gross (Passchendaele), who plays the Montana Kid, talks about what it was like to work with the cast of Gunless and the film.
British actress Sienna Guillory (Inkheart), who plays Jane, talks about why she took the role, her impressions of the 1880s, working with Paul Gross, the romance of Gunless and what she took away while filming it.
Dustin Milligan (90210) plays Corporal Jonathan Kent, a constable of the North-West Mounted Police (the ancestor of the Royal Canadian Mounted Police). He talks about his character’s moustache, wanting to work on a western, meeting with writer director William Phillips and what he got out of the film.

Toronto -- Canadian indie producers Brightlight Pictures and Rhombus Media have joined up with Reese Witherspoon's Type A Films to develop "Under the Bridge," a true-crime feature about the 1997 murder of a 14-year-old Canadian high school student.
Witherspoon in 2007 initially optioned Rebecca Godfrey's book about the gruesome murder of Reena Virk by eight fellow students under a small bridge in Saanich, B.C.
Virk's death, and the subsequent trial and convictions of her slayers, provoked a national debate among Canadians over high school bullying and violence.
Vancouver-based Brightlight and Toronto-based Rhombus will partner with Type A Films to develop "Under the Bridge."
Shawn Williamson and Stephen Hegyes will produce for Brightlight, Niv Fichman for Rhombus and Reese Witherspoon and Jennifer Simpson will produce for Type A Films.
No word on creative elements and casting.

Back in January we featured a trailer for a Canadian western spoof called Gunless starring Eastwick actor Paul Gross, Sienna Guillory, Dustin Milligan, and Callum Keith Rennie. Fs.net reader Randol sent us an email last night linking to a new full-length theatrical trailer for Gunless on YouTube. It looks exactly like I expected it would, but boy does it look fun. I feel like these Canadians pulled off a great little indie western comedy and I can't wait to see this. I don't expect everyone to be into it as well, but I just think it looks like an entertaining movie. Unfortunately I'm not sure when it's coming to the Us. Check out the trailer below! As a Canadian myself, I feel a certain degree of obligation to show some love and support for our fellow filmmakers north of the border because the sad truth of the matter is our film industry is getting their ass handed to them from Hollywood, thus making it harder for them to do what they do and as a result, drives away homegrown talents to the Us for better opportunities. So with that said, I would like to direct your attention to the trailer for Gunless, a western comedy staring Paul Gross who I often refer to as the guy from Due South and the lovely Sienna Guillory. Ironically, this film is the reverse fish out the water scenario to Due South in that Paul is playing an American stranger in a Canadian town. No doubt there will be some poke jabs taken at the expense of our neighbors from the south.

So sue me, but I’m definitely watching Paul Gross’ new movie “Gunless” when I get my little hands on it. Being that it’s a Canadian production, that probably means it’ll arrive Stateside on DVD after it opens up North on April 30, 2010. The film stars Gross (“Due South”) as The Montana Kid, a hardened American gunslinger who flees to a small town in Canada after a run-in with some unsavory types that yields him a bullet in the ass. Up north, the Kid encounter eccentric town folks and predictable romantic comedy stuff with the lovely Sienna Guillory, not to be confused with the equally blonde and British Sienna Miller. The teaser trailer gave us a taste of the film’s vibe, and now the full trailer is up at the film’s official site, which you can see below. Also in the cast, Tyler Mane, Callum Keith Rennie,...

Oh my goodness, Paul Gross does make my toes curl in the most delightful way. And then when he’s funny, I fall in love all the more. Maybe Brisco County Jr. is the one who dares to go up against the Montana Kid? I think I might just have to die from an overdose of wonderfulness if Paul Gross and Bruce Campbell were in the same movie? (Looks like Monika Bartyzel at Cinematical has the same idea.) Gunless opens in Canada on April 30; no U.S. or U.K. release dates have been announced.

Now here's a fun teaser trailer for a Canadian film called Gunless. I first heard about this last year at the Toronto Film Festival. It had been described as a western without guns, but it's not exactly that. It's a western, that's for sure, but the twist is that the Canadian town this American gunslinger ends up is gunless, while our hero - The Montana Kid - is not gunless. It's kind of a fish-out-of-water film, but it's also a play on westerns that makes fun of Americans. It stars Canadian actor Paul Gross, who was on "Due South" and "Eastwick", and also Sienna Guillory. It's a very short teaser, but I've got to admit, it does look quite fun. The other day I started the Inglorious Basterds Blu-ray at a friends place and was greeted by an extra-hairy, gunslinging Paul Gross in a trailer for the upcoming Canadian comedy Gunless.* It's the story of -- get this -- a gunslinger who calls out a surly blacksmith (played by Tyler Mane, the new Michael Myers), only to find out that the town doesn't have one working pistol for the showdown. I laughed, put it on my mental movie to-do list, and carried on. But then I watched it again over at Quiet Earth (embedded after the jump), and found myself wondering: When will we get a Paul Gross v. Bruce Campbell showdown?
You know Gross ... right? No? He's the cutie T.J. Burke from Aspen Extreme. The red-clad mountie in Due South. Chris Cutter in Men with Brooms. The writer, director, and star of the 2008 Wwi war movie Passchendaele. And if you missed all that,...

I like Paul Gross. He used to be on a show called “Due South”, where he played a Canadian Royal Mountie that could do pretty much anything and everything. Sorta like a Canadian Superman, except in a goofy hat. He also starred in and directed “Men with Brooms”, which was funny. His latest is a Western comedy called “Gunless”. Gross stars as an American gunfighter name the Montana Kid, who shows up in a strange town populated by people who don’t know how to react to a gunfighter in their midst. The teaser trailer is pretty funny, and it co-stars Sienna Guillory, which has to mean this is a winner, but maybe that’s just my Sienna Guillory bias talking. A hardened American gunslinger is repeatedly thwarted in his attempts to mount a showdown in a friendly town in Canada where no one seems to understand or appreciate the...

The last time we saw Paul Gross he was behind the camera directing mayhem in the trenches of the Wwi battle of Passchendaele. Now, in Gunless, an upcoming Canadian riff on the Western, he plays a gunman who is perplexed by the fact that no one in seems to understand or appreciate the brutal code of the American Wild West anymore.
