Paula Weinstein, the veteran studio executive, two-time Emmy winner and producer on such projects as The Fabulous Baker Boys, The Perfect Storm, Analyze This and Grace and Frankie, died Monday. She was 78.
Weinstein died at her home in New York, her daughter, Hannah Rosenberg, told The Hollywood Reporter. No cause of death was revealed.
“The world is a lesser place without my mother,” Rosenberg said in a statement. “She was a masterful producer and a force of nature for the things she believed in, including the many projects that spanned her illustrious career, the stories she fought to tell and the social justice causes she championed.”
In September, Weinstein exited Tribeca Enterprises, which she joined as executive vp in 2013, to work on political campaigns. She earlier was a vp at Warner Bros., an executive vp at 20th Century Fox and president of United Artists.

Former studio executive and prolific producer Paula Weinstein is leaving Tribeca Enterprises, where she’s been chief content officer for the past decade, to jump into political work and help “as many voices as possible be heard.”
“I don’t want to sit on the sidelines and rail about everything. I really want to jump in, fully, into the campaigns. Both statewide and national campaigns,” she tells Deadline. “It just feels very much like a moment…between the climate, and book banning and everything else that I don’t need to go into.”
In a memo to staff this morning, Tribeca CEO Jane Rosenthal said Weinstein will “devote her efforts to fighting for the preservation and advancement of human and women’s rights, and most urgently the upcoming elections.” She will also continue to consult for Tribeca. Next summer’s festival, dates just announced, would have been her 12th.

Over eight years after the commercial failure of “Blackhat,” director Michael Mann is putting the blame where he feels it belongs: Michael Mann.
While promoting the upcoming Adam Driver vehicle “Ferrari” in an interview with Variety, the filmmaker briefly fell on his sword concerning the $70 million R-rated actioner. In January of 2015, it earned mixed-to-negative reviews and just $20 million at the global box office.
“It’s my responsibility,” Mann told the publication. “The script was not ready to shoot.” Like many of Mann’s pictures, “Blackhat” has gained a cult audience since its theatrical release, as well as a restructured director’s cut. While Mann blames himself, it also ran into the newfangled notion of audiences not wanting to see a big new movie star outside of his marquee character role.
Moviegoers didn’t care about Chris Hemsworth — talent and charisma notwithstanding — when he wasn’t playing Thor in the MCU.

Cillian Murphy has had quite the career since he first appeared in the 1997 short film Quando. He would rise to prominence in the 2000’s by appearing in Danny Boyle’s post apocalyptic zombie tale 28 Days Later before finding even more success being one of Christopher Nolan’s go to guys in films such as Batman Begins and Inception. It would be that collaboration that would give Murphy his biggest leading roles yet in the massively successful Oppenheimer, a film that will hopefully see Murphy’s name on the short list for Best Actor during this years Awards season. So with quite the Pre-Oppenheimer resume, we wanted to know what film starring the Irish born actor has been your favorite. As always, if you don’t see your favorite listed, click other and let us know in the comments. We kept films like Tron: Legacy, Dark Knight and Dark Knight...

Agreements of the sort are not frequently come upon these days, amid the SAG-AFTRA and the WGA strikes. The idea here is, of course, to develop Whalefall for the big screen, at the point when Hollywood is again back up and running. No development will be done and no writing services will be rendered here until new guild contracts are struck.
Already generating critical acclaim from early readers and immense buzz within the world of publishing, the book is described as The Martian meets 127 Hours. The story follows a scuba diver in search of his deceased father’s remains who gets swallowed by an 80-foot, 60-ton sperm...

Ron Howard is no stranger to the challenges of filmmaking, having built his career crafting movies that unfold in fiery infernos (“Backdraft”) and doomed whaling ships (“In the Heart of the Sea”) and literal outer space (“Apollo 13”). Telling such tales in the most accurate way possible requires exhaustive and exacting production requirements and Howard’s most recent film, “Thirteen Lives” is no exception.
The biographical drama is inspired by the events of the Tham Luang cave rescue, in which 12 junior football players, aged 11 to 16, and their 25-year-old assistant coach were trapped several miles into a partially flooded cave system, and the global effort required to save them.
But from the start, filming on “Thirteen Lives” was special. “I never had less complaining while making a difficult movie than I had on this film,” Howard said during a virtual screening of the film as part of TheWrap’s 2022-2023 Awards Season Screening Series.

In Herman Melville's original 1851 novel "Moby-Dick," not much was known about the vengeful Capt. Ahab beyond his obsession with finding the story's titular whale. In Mike Barker's 2011 miniseries, Ahab (William Hurt) interacts with his on-screen wife Elizabeth (Gillian Anderson). Ethan Hawke plays Starbuck, Raoul Trujillo plays Queequeg, and Charlie Cox plays the stalwart narrator Ishmael. Cox has recently been getting a great deal of attention from Marvel fans for his performance as the superhero Daredevil in his own show, and for guest spots on "She Hulk: Attorney at Law" and in "Spider-Man: No Way Home." This author first noticed Cox for his performance as Lorenzo in Michael Radford's 2004 adaptation of "The Merchant of Venice." His appearance in "Moby Dick" would immediately be followed by 23 episode of the hit show "Boardwalk Empire," putting the actor on the map.

Director Ron Howard is no stranger to working with his VFX supervisors. “Inferno,” “Solo: A Star Wars Story” and “In the Heart of the Sea,” all required close collaboration with the VFX team. But his latest film, “Thirteen Lives,” presented him with one of the biggest challenges — shooting in caves.
In “Thirteen Lives,” Howard knew Jason Billington, Mpc VFX Supervisor, would be a key collaborator. “I knew Jason was going to be additive, but what was most interesting to me was that there was a large amount of work which I expected, but it was not the work that I thought we would be doing.”
The film retells the incredible rescue effort of 12 boys and their soccer coach after they go exploring in Thailand’s Tham Luang cave. A monsoon leaves the boys stranded until divers arrive and attempt to get them out of the cave, one person at a time.

Meanwhile, new library arrivals this month include the Bruce Willis and Joseph Gordon-Levitt sci-fi mind-bender “Looper,” both “Shrek” and “Shrek 2,” and all four films in “The Twilight Saga.”
April is also a big month for new TV shows on Hulu. Andrew Garfield’s hot streak continues with the FX drama “Under the Banner of Heaven,” which debuts exclusively on Hulu April 28. For reality TV fans, “The Kardashians” premieres on April 14. Hulu also has two franchise spinoff kids shows returning with Season 7 of “Madagascar: A Little Wild” on April 4 and Season 2 of “The Croods: Family Tree” on April 5.

Though the confusingly named initiative “FX on Hulu” is on its way out, FX is still bringing premium television to Hulu in the meantime.
Hulu’s list of new releases for April 2022 is highlighted by FX limited series Under the Banner of Heaven. This adaptation of the non-fiction book by John Krakauer stars Andrew Garfield as a Mormon police detective whose faith is shaken when investigating a murder involving the church.
It’s not all just FX on the TV side of things for Hulu this month, however. The streamer is debuting second seasons of its series The Hardy Boys (April 6) and Woke (April 8). There isn’t much to report from Hulu’s original movies arm aside from true crime documentary Captive Audience on April 21. But that doc about one family’s 50-year journey for justice sounds like a must-watch.

In legal circles, there’s a saying that big cases make for bad law, meaning that misinterpretations of high-profile situations can lead to the wrong conclusions. That may apply to early reactions to the opening grosses of Steven Spielberg’s “West Side Story.”
Its $10.5 million initial gross fell into the low-end range of expectations — however modest — and doomy extrapolations followed. Even TMZ, not known for its Saturday-morning box office coverage, got on board: “Spielberg’s ‘West Side Story’ Flops,” it headlined, adding “Fans Blame Ansel Elgort’s Casting.”
Maybe there’s some small solace in a site that caters to a younger audience still caring about theatrical box office, but this is a time when nuance is essential. It could be the difference between a film being killed off and one that still has a chance to emerge from its box-office dead zone to take advantage of its “A” Cinemascore and draw an audience.

If you are interested in the future of non-franchise, non-comic book films at the movie theater, you’ve got an assignment this weekend: make it a priority to see “West Side Story” (Disney). Still, the film’s post-Thanksgiving, pre-Christmas dead-zone release date will make it riskier than normal to determine whether it is a success, at least initially. The stakes are high indeed for this $100 million feature, and they go beyond just its profitability, so a lot of context should be considered.
2021 was touted as the year of the musical, a rebound after the disaster of “Cats” in 2019, but this year’s results have been underwhelming. “In the Heights” was widely considered to be a disappointment after its $11.5 million opening ($30 million total). “Dear Evan Hansen” was worse: it opened with $7.4 million, made just $15 million during its run, and attracted little PVOD interest when it released there after three weeks. The summer movie season may be winding down, but HBO Max is keeping the movie ball rolling in September 2021. HBO Max’s list of new releases this month is heavy on the film side of things – both in library and original offerings.
Two Warner Bros. films of note arrive this month. The James Wan-directed horror tale Malignant premieres on Sept. 10 and is followed by Clint Eastwood’s Cry Macho on Sept. 17. The next installment in Adventure Time: Distant Lands (which is kind of like a film series!) is titled Wizard City and opens the month on Sept. 2
Of course, it wouldn’t be a new month of HBO Max releases without some interesting evergreen Warner movie titles. Sept. 1 finds all eight Harry Potter movies returning to WarnerMedia’s streaming service. They will be accompanied by The Goonies, The Evil Dead, Cloverfield, and more. Later on in the month, Mortal Kombat (Sept.

The Boy Who Lived is changing his U.S. streaming address again.
All eight original “Harry Potter” films from Warner Bros. are returning to HBO Max next month, after spending a little less than a year on NBCUniversal’s Peacock.
Starting Sept. 1, the eight wizarding films based on J.K. Rowling’s best-selling novels will be available on HBO Max: “Harry Potter and the Sorcerer’s Stone,” “Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets,” “Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban,” “Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire,” “Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix,” “Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince,” and “Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows” Parts 1 and 2.
When HBO Max launched in May 2020, it included the octet of “Harry Potter” movies — but that was only a three-month carve-out on streaming rights the studio had sold to NBCU. In October 2020, Peacock began streaming the “Harry Potter” movies; now WarnerMedia...

Benjamin Walker is best known for starring in the musical “Bloody Bloody Andrew Jackson” and films such as “Abraham Lincoln: Vampire Hunter” and “In the Heart of the Sea,” but his next role could shape up to be his most career-defining. The actor is a member of the ensemble cast for Amazon’s “Lord of the Rings” television series, now shooting its first season in New Zealand. Walker recently told Collider he was initially hesitant to join the series. What changed his mind? A phone call with showrunner J.D. Payne that came from an unexpected place.
“It was a long audition process, and then I didn’t hear from them for a few months,” Walker said. “I mean the whole world was struggling to figure out what we were going to do next at that point. And then one of the showrunners, J.D. [Payne] called me and he pitched...

Paul Anderson, who stars as Arthur Shelby in TV hit Peaky Blinders, is set to next star in WWII action movie Immortal.
Jalmari Helander, the Finnish filmmaker behind Rare Exports and Big Game, will direct the film, which will start shooting in Lapland, Finland, in September of this year.
Sony Pictures Worldwide Acquisitions (Spwa) has swooped on world rights outside Nordic, and Nordisk Film has taken Nordic rights.
Set in 1945, Immortal tells the story of ex-soldier Aatami, played by Helander’s long-time collaborator Jorma Tommila, who discovers gold in the deep wilderness of Lapland. Tom Holland seems like a really lovely chap. Outside playing Spider-Man in the MCU, the 24-year-old Brit is possibly best known for being unable to stop himself from leaking spoilers and his genuinely amazing performance of Rihanna’s ”Umbrella” during a lip sync battle.
From his breakout turn in The Impossible to his watery adventure with Chris Hemsworth in In The Heart of the Sea, Holland proved himself versatile and talented even before he put on the Spidey suit. Lately though Holland seems to be exploring his dark side and it fits him well.

It has been more than 12 years since Tom Holland made his West End theatre debut as Billy Elliot in the musical adaptation of Stephen Daldry’s modern classic film; a half lifetime for the 24-year-old actor who has spent the time since forging a career as a major star. Of course, his trajectory was helped along by his casting in the Marvel Cinematic Universe as Spider-Man in Captain America: Civil War, but it was his spirit and energy that breathed new life into a superhero who had already weathered two big-screen adaptations. He reunites with directors Anthony and Joe Russo this year for Cherry, which, in Holland’s own words, represents the greatest challenge of his career to date. What better opportunity to dive into his film and television favorites?

Chris Hemsworth might be an A-list movie star thanks to his role as the Marvel Cinematic Universe’s Thor, not to mention an absolute physical specimen, an incredibly wealthy and handsome man, as well as an all-round good guy by virtually every account, but one thing he definitely isn’t as of yet is a box office draw outside the confines of the McU.
The actor has taken top billing in Michael Mann’s techno thriller Blackhat, Ron Howard’s epic In the Heart of the Sea, fantasy sequel The Huntsman: Winter’s War and Men in Black: International, all of which bombed at the box office. In fact, the two highest-grossing movies of Hemsworth’s career outside of the world of Marvel are Snow White and the Huntsman, when he occupied third place in the marketing behind Kristen Stewart and Charlize Theron, and J.J. Chris Hemsworth hasn’t had the best of luck headlining movies where he isn’t playing the Marvel Cinematic Universe’s Thor. After taking top billing in a string of critical and commercial disappointments like Blackhat, In the Heart of the Sea, The Huntsman: Winter’s War and Men in Black: International, many industry insiders forecasted the worst for the Antipodean actor’s long term prospects whenever his career-defining stint as the McU’s God of Thunder eventually drew to a close.
Taking his talents to streaming turned out to be an incredibly smart move, though, as Hemsworth played the lead role in Netflix’s most-watched original movie ever, which is an impressive feat given that six of the platform’s ten biggest hits in terms of viewership numbers have all been released since March of this year. George Miller has tapped Anya Taylor-Joy, Chris Hemsworth and Yahya Abdul-Mateen II to star in “Furiosa,” the prequel movie based on Charlize Theron’s Imperator Furiosa character from 2015’s “Mad Max: Fury Road.”
Taylor-Joy will play title role, a younger version of Furiosa. Miller had said in a May interview with The New York Times that he’d been searching for searching for an actress in her 20s to take over the role. He said at the time he had considered using de-aging technology in order to allow Theron — who’s 44 –to play the part again, but has decided against doing so. Taylor-Joy is 24.

For a long time, people have had doubts about Chris Hemsworth’s capabilities as a leading man outside of his career-defining role as the Marvel Cinematic Universe’s Thor. Even his critically-acclaimed efforts like The Cabin in the Woods, Rush and Bad Times at the El Royale hardly set the world on fire, leading many to believe that the 36 year-old’s fortunes would face an inevitable downturn once his time playing the God of Thunder came to an end. Let’s be honest, most non-Marvel movies starring Chris Hemsworth haven’t been great. In fact, there are only two that have been met with praise and have a lasting impact and those are Rush and Extraction.
From Blackhat to In the Heart of the Sea to last year’s Men in Black: International, Hemsworth just hasn’t picked strong projects to diversify his career with. Even comedies like Vacation and Ghostbusters were duds despite the Australian actor showing strong comedic chops that he would eventually get to use in later Marvel films.

Up until Extraction landed on Netflix and quickly captured the Internet’s imagination, as well as being regarded as one of the year’s best action movies, there had always been doubts surrounding Chris Hemsworth’s ability to cut it as a leading man outside of his career-defining role as the Marvel Cinematic Universe’s Thor.
Blackhat, In the Heart of the Sea, The Huntsman: Winter’s War and Men in Black: International all disappointed at the box office with the Australian actor front-and-center, although it didn’t help that none of those movies were particularly good in their own right. But Taika Waititi cracked the formula when he managed to strike the balance between Hemsworth’s action chops and comedic timing in Thor: Ragnarok, and now we’ve heard that he could be following the director into a galaxy far, far away.

It didn’t take long for Hollywood to realize it had something with Chris Hemsworth, but Australia held on to this star-in-the-making for years. The Wrap takes a look at the short-yet-productive career of the only man who could rival Hugh Jackman for pure Aussie star power.
Guinevere Jones (2002)
Thor wasn’t the first mythical figure Hemsworth got to play. His first screen appearance came courtesy of the Australian fantasy series “Guinevere Jones,” in which he appeared as the legendary King Arthur for a handful of episodes. Even then, it was clear that long hair was his look.
Home and Away (2004-07)
His breakout role, Hemsworth’s turn as high school dropout Kim Hyde came about after he auditioned for another role, but was turned down. He won a Logie Award for Most Popular New Male Talent and, at the height of his character’s popularity, competed in the fifth...

We love Chris Hemsworth, don’t get us wrong, but the guy just hasn’t had much luck when it comes to non-mcu movies. He’s always entertaining to watch, sure, and has done fine in supporting roles in films like Vacation, Ghostbusters and Bad Times at the El Royale, but when it comes to leading his own non-Marvel efforts, well, things aren’t so rosy.
Michael Mann’s Blackhat was a disaster in every sense of the word while Ron Howard’s period-set In the Heart of the Sea didn’t really impress a whole lot of people, either. 12 Strong, meanwhile, was a fine movie all things considered, but didn’t make much of an impact at the box office or with critics. And then, of course, there’s Men in Black: International, which we’d rather pretend didn’t happen.
His latest effort though, Extraction, is coming to...

In anticipation of Chris Hemsworth’s upcoming action movie Extraction, a new behind-the-scenes video has been released detailing an action sequence in the film and all of the complications that surround it.
In the video, Hemsworth, director Sam Hargrave and screenwriter Joe Russo talk about a 12-minute set piece in the pic that will be one long continuous shot. It features a car chase, hand-to-hand combat and gunfire and according to the Thor actor, it was “by far the most complicated action sequence” he’s ever been a part of.” Which is saying a lot considering he’s appeared in several Marvel movies.
By far the most complicated action sequence I’ve ever been part of, and if it wasn’t already complex enough, our director decided to shoot it as a “oner” — almost 12 minutes long and it’s about as exhausting to watch as it was to film. Strap in folks!

No offense to Chris Hemsworth, but so far at least, he hasn’t had much luck with transferring his success as Thor in the McU to other films where he’s in the lead role. He’s always entertaining to watch and has been fine with tackling supporting parts in the likes of Vacation, Ghostbusters and Bad Times at the El Royale, but in terms of movies where his name is above the title, the results haven’t been great.
Michael Mann’s Blackhat was a total disaster and earned less than $20 million globally, Ron Howard’s period-set In the Heart of the Sea didn’t make much of an impact either, and 12 Strong’s critical and commercial performance was nothing to write home about. And obviously, the less said about Men in Black: International, the better.

No offense to Chris Hemsworth, but he’s always struggled to transfer his success as Thor in the Marvel Cinematic Universe to other projects where he’s playing the leading man. While he’s always good value for money when tackling supporting roles in the likes of Vacation, Ghostbusters and Bad Times at the El Royale that make the best use of his charisma and comic timing, his track record when his name is above the title is a whole lot less than encouraging.
Michael Mann’s Blackhat is one of the biggest bombs in recent memory after earning less than $20 million globally, Ron Howard’s period-set In the Heart of the Sea failed to recoup its $100 million budget at the box office, 12 Strong’s critical and commercial performance was decidedly mediocre, and the less said about Men in Black: International, the better.

For the second straight weekend, four new wide releases make their way into theaters with Warner Bros. looking to lead the way with the latest Stephen King adaptation, Doctor Sleep. Also debuting this weekend is Universal's holiday-themed romantic comedy Last Christmas, Lionsgate's World War II actioner Midway and Fox's family comedy Playing with Fire. Additionally, both Neon's Parasite and Fox Searchlight's Jojo Rabbit expand nationwide this weekend.
At the top is where we expect to find WB's Doctor Sleep, hitting theaters nearly 40 years after Stanley Kubrick's filmed adaptation of Stephen King's The Shining. Directed by Mike Flanagan (Ouija: Origin of Evil) and starring Ewan McGregor and Rebecca Ferguson, the film debuts in 3,855 locations this weekend with the studio anticipating a debut around $25 million. This puts the film on course for an opening similar to Pet Sematary, which debuted with $24.5 million back in April and...
