For those like myself, who adore witnessing Anya Taylor-Joy grace the scene in enchanting gowns adorned with flowing fabrics and soft pastel hues, it’s time to prepare for a shift.
She’s undergoing a style metamorphosis, embracing a fusion of ethereal textures and an all-black aesthetic.

Lately, Anya has been gravitating towards a darker palette, likely influenced by her role in her upcoming movie, Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga, which will hit theaters on May 24.
In this film, she embodies the titular character Imperator Furiosa, a member of a motorcycle horde and a younger iteration of the role Charlize Theron portrayed in 2015’s Mad Max: Fury Road.

With Dune: Part Two and Civil War in theaters, it’s already been a great year for sci-fi, and that doesn’t even count goofball flicks like Godzilla X Kong: The New Empire, Ghostbusters: Frozen Empire, or any other movies with the word “empire” in the title. Sure, it’s not all perfect. Bong Joon-ho’s Mickey 17, starring Robert Pattinson, has been pulled from the release schedule and there’s no way that Spider-Man: Beyond the Spider-Verse will release this year. But overall, 2024 has been a strong start for sci-fi movies.
Even better, 2024 isn’t even halfway done. Per tradition, Den of Geek has put together a list of the big sci-fi movies heading your way for the rest of the year. In 2016, George Miller’s Mad Max: Fury Road made a big splash at the Oscars claiming six Academy Awards from the astonishing 10 nominations. Starring Tom Hardy and Charlize Theron, the 2015 movie is undoubtedly a post-apocalyptic masterpiece. But it was the fruition of the decades-long patience of Miller.
Charlize Theron and Tom Hardy in Mad Max: Fury Road
The casting, in particular, had been quite a long process, and inherently, the movie was far from being instantaneous. To begin with, it was nearly unimaginable to have any other actor playing Max after Mel Gibson elevated the character to an epic height in the Miller-directed 1979 movie, Mad Max.

When George Miller takes “Furiosa” to Cannes next month, it will be one of the biggest action films to hit the Croisette since the last time he took a “Mad Max” movie to the iconic festival. Miller’s groundbreaking blockbuster “Mad Max: Fury Road” was an instant hit when it premiered at Cannes in 2015, and his new prequel film promises to further expand the mythology by providing an origin story for Charlize Theron’s Furiosa, who is now played by Anya Taylor-Joy.
Finding more stories to tell about Furiosa was a simple task for Miller, who had already come up with an abundance of them while working on “Fury Road.” Speaking at CinemaCon this week (via Deadline), Miller explained that he wrote out new backstories for the characters of Hardy’s Max and Theron’s Furiosa for the cast and crew in the form of a full screenplay and novella before filming the 2015 franchise reboot.

The franchise is poised for further expansion with upcoming films like Furiosa and The Wasteland. The character of Tom Ripley first appeared in Patricia Highsmith's 1955 novel "The Talented Mr. Ripley," a salacious story about a con man who is hired to locate an old school chum named Dickie Greenleaf but who ends up becoming obsessed with him, killing him, and supplanting him. Ripley is not a charming con man, but he is staggeringly clever and possesses a talent for subterfuge. He's also driven by his baser desires, unable to resist pursuing the women and men he lusts after (Ripley is likely bisexual) or stealing the money he so desperately wants. Each time, Ripley gets away with it, as evidenced by the fact that he starred in five novels published through to 1991.
A critic once pointed out that Tom Ripley's character arc is a direct inversion of traditional storytelling. A typical crime novel protagonist will learn new things as the story progresses and then use...

Reviews will have to wait till the Cannes Film Festival kicks off on May 14, but it’s not too early for a critic to weigh in on this year’s lineup — or how it looks on paper, at least, and what the selection might say about the state of things.
At the top of the press conference, festival director Thierry Frémaux noted that last year would be a tough edition to top. The two big winners of the 2023 competition, “Anatomy of a Fall” and “Zone of Interest,” went on to score Oscar best picture nominations, alongside Martin Scorsese’s “Killers of the Flower Moon.” The festival made strides toward gender parity, with nearly a third of the films in competition directed by women. And to complicate matters, Hollywood has since been hit by two production-stopping guild strikes, delaying films the studios might have sent to Cannes.

Sasquatch Sunset releases April 12th, 2024.
Do Sasquatches really exist? The answer is almost certainly “no,” but if they did, what would their day-to-day life look like? That’s the question that the Zellner Bros. set out to answer with their offbeat feature-film following an unconventional family of bigfoots (or is it bigfeet?). If you’re not quite sure what to make of that premise, don’t worry. Neither was I. I would implore anybody curious about this film to enter it with an open mind and a willingness to experience it for what it is: a one-of-a-kind blend of potty humor and poignant reflection, delivered in a way you’ve never seen before.

The 2024 Cannes Film Festival lineup was finally revealed at the sliver of dawn on Thursday, April 11. Festival director Thierry Frémaux and president Iris Knobloch unveiled this year’s crop of films across the many sections, from the Competition to Un Certain Regard, during a press conference beginning at 5 a.m. Et. See the full lineup below.
The 77th edition of Cannes comes to the Côte d’Azur May 14 through 25, and a few titles were already confirmed to be in the mix. There’s Francis Ford Coppola’s self-funded epic “Megalopolis,” which has already screened for a rarified few in the United States to much awe and speculation over what distributor might take on Coppola’s experimental vision. For his first feature since 2011’s “Twixt,” Coppola gathered a cast including Adam Driver, Nathalie Emmanuel, Shia Labeouf, Giancarlo Esposito, Aubrey Plaza, and Jason Schwartzman for a sci-fi vision of a ruined NYC-like metropolis.

Yesterday, Warner Bros. kicked off CinemaCon 2024 in Las Vegas with the first big studio panel, igniting a wave of excitement among fans of the “Mad Max” franchise. Visionary filmmaker George Miller’s ‘Furisoa: A Mad Max Saga’ was a highlight of the event as the film’s backstory of our wasteland heroine unfolds over 20 years. During the panel, the Aussie writer/director teased the audience with hints of a potential third Mad Max story taking place a year before “Mad Max: Fury Road” in the form of a novella he had penned during the extended production delays on the 2015 epic alongside the “Furiosa” script.

Still, there is no stopping for the actor. She puts herself up to every challenge possible despite the inherent cons attached to it. On-set injuries are not new to the actor as she was almost paralyzed after a neck injury after filming a scene in the 2005 Karyn Kusama-directed sci-fi action flick, Æon Flux. But she sustained permanent damage to her body after working in a film by the John Wick director.

Since the "Furiosa" trailer first released in November 2023, one of the top questions on most fans' minds was exactly what the deal was with Chris Hemsworth's character, Dementus. From the trailers, he sure seemed like an antagonist, but he also felt a little too cool and fun to be a straightforward villain. Chris Hemsworth is always likable, after all, especially when he gets to use his native Aussie accent. At Warner Bros.' CinemaCon 2024 presentation in Las Vegas, attended by /Film's own Ryan Scott, director George Miller shed some light on creating the new villain Dementus for the upcoming prequel film, as well as his thought process on hiring Hemsworth for the role.

Anya Taylor-Joy, Chris Hemsworth, and George Miller took the stage during the Warner Bros. panel. Miller told the eager CinemaCon crowd that Furiosa takes place over 18 years, whereas Fury Road’s story lasted three days. Speaking about Hemsworth, Miller said he couldn’t think of anyone to play Dementus, and he’d had the script for a long time.

As far as iconic franchises go, George Miller’s Mad Max films are right up there among Hollywood’s favorite film series. Similar to his namesake George Lucas and his brainchild Star Wars, Miller created the dystopian action series back in 1979 with Mel Gibson, which was followed by three successful sequels in the 80s.

George Miller has praised the "mystical" qualities of 'Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga' actress Anya Taylor-Joy.The 79-year-old filmmaker has helmed the post-apocalyptic action prequel flick and felt that Anya had all the right attributes to play a young Imperator Furiosa after seeing her performance in the movie 'Last Night in Soho'.Speaking at CinemaCon in Las Vegas on Monday (08.04.24), George said: "There's something mystical about her, and yet, there's an accessibility. I learned that she was somebody who is very, very disciplined, even though she's very young. "She was a ballet dancer. was a ballet dancer. I understand the physical discipline as well as the emotional discipline they have. So all of that led to Anya being in 'Furiosa'."Chris Hemsworth portrays Warlord Dementus in the film and George described his Australian compatriot as "the complete article".He explained: "I knew the character but I never thought...

Australian filmmaker George Miller, whose origins story Furiosa will world premiere at the Cannes Film Festival next month before Warner Bros begins its global rollout May 22, says he’s still making Mad Max movies “because they’re very addictive.”
Miller was speaking at CinemaCon on Monday in Las Vegas where he received the International Career Achievement in Filmmaking Award. During a discussion with Warner Bros President of International Theatrical Distribution Andrew Cripps, Miller looked back at his path from medical doctor to director and delved into some of the history of the 1979 classic Mad Max, as well as sharing some insights into the upcoming Furiosa.
Miller, who was “always interested in cinema,” originally trained as a doctor and kept practicing even after he made Mad Max “because even though it was successful, I didn’t think I had it in me to be a filmmaker.” Eventually however, “I kept going.

Before Focus Features released Edgar Wright’s neo-noir thriller Last Night in Soho in October 2021, the filmmaker showed a cut to pal George Miller. The Australian director was so struck by star Anya Taylor-Joy’s performance that he went back to Wright with an idea.
“I said, ‘Gee, she’d be good for…,’” detailed Miller, who then said Wright interjected before he could finish the thought. “[He said], ‘Do it, do it. She’s great.’” Miller took Wright’s concise advice and cast Taylor-Joy in the title role of Warner Bros. Pictures’ Furiosa, the newest installment of his blockbuster Mad Max franchise. She plays a young woman in a dystopian universe who was snatched from home only to fall into the hands of the great Biker Horde led by the Warlord of Dementus, played by Chris Hemsworth. Furiosa is then forced to withstand many trials as she puts together the means to find her way home.

And while anticipation is obviously sky-high, I have faith that master director George Miller will be able to pull it off. Back in 2010, it was reported that director George Miller would be shooting two new entries in his Mad Max franchise back-to-back: the sequel Mad Max: Fury Road and a follow-up called Furiosa. But things didn’t work out that way, and making Mad Max: Fury Road on its own proved to quite a struggle – a five month shoot in the deserts of Namibia, with two lead actors (Tom Hardy as Max Rockatansky and Charlize Theron as Furiosa) who couldn’t stand each other. Miller didn’t let the grueling process put him off making more Mad Max movies, though. Immediately after the release of Mad Max: Fury Road in 2015, Miller announced that he had already written a screenplay and a novella of further stories… and Max himself would return in a film called Mad Max: The Wasteland. But eight years have passed, and while Furiosa is ready to go (with...

Drama In UK Drama ‘This Is Going to Hurt’
Antitrust the process: Not great news for the UK’s fabled TV drama community this week as we brought news that the antitrust investigation spooking producers will be prolonged for at least six months – and likely far longer. A reminder: the Competition and Markets Authority’s (CMA) probe is examining whether BBC Studios, ITV Studios and four other storied indies colluded by informally fixing freelancers’ wage rates. The extension will see the CMA implement “further investigatory steps” and assessment of evidence” for the next six months, and those Max spoke with said the authority has an enormous wealth of evidence to get through. “Stressed” and “jittery” was the vibe described by one connected source about those being probed, who now face months...

A multilayered revenge thriller, a dizzying swirl through a version of Mumbai's underworld that owes as much to The Matrix as it does to Society, Polite or otherwise. A début feature for writer, director, star Dev Patel, it never dwells on its various filmmaking influences and references as it pushes towards its blistering finale. That's after a bruising and scarring start, more traumatic flashbacks, even a tabla-scored training montage. While it does take a moment or two to rest, Monkey Man is as intent on incident as The Raid or Mad Max: Fury Road.
One of the few things left out of Monkey Man is the oft-covered ska classic by Toots & The Maytals. That's not to suggest that anything that the film throws to see if it sticks isn't of quality, indeed the opposite is true. It's serious monkey business, a caper of quality that's...

There is an episode of "SpongeBob SquarePants" wherein SpongeBob makes a clown of himself by ripping his pants while trying to pick up a measly stick while "training" on the beach with friends Sandy and Larry. When everyone laughs with him rather than at him, Spongebob rolls with it.
Of course, this being SpongeBob, he takes things too far. He starts ripping one pair of pants after another for a laugh until everyone at the underwater beach is annoyed and eventually disgusted by him — even his ripped pants take consciousness and abandon the poor sponge. The episode ends with SpongeBob singing a phenomenal song about his ripping his pants costing him his friends, and everyone forgives him.
What does SpongeBob have to do with "Star Wars"? Usually very little. Stephen Hillenburg's masterpiece is lighter on pop culture references than most of its contemporaries. But they do have something in...

The multiversal saga has been a mixed bag for the MCU so far. And with Jonathan Majors being let go, it can’t be said for certain what the future holds for this chapter, which was being built around the character of Kang. However, it seems Marvel might not be shifting away from the Conqueror just yet, as new rumors suggest Kang might play a major part in the potential Doctor Strange 3.
While things have been quiet on the MCU’s part on Doctor Strange 3, per new rumors, the threequel will see Charlize Theron’s Clea teaming up with Benedict Cumberbatch’s Strange.

Over the years, various actors have put their own spin on the role, but they all need to capture the essence of Bond as established in decades of books and films.

“There will always be war,” intones an authoritative voice at the end of the second trailer for Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga. “But to get home, Furiosa fought the world.”
A narrator isn’t exactly something new to the world of Mad Max, as the 1981 sequel Mad Max 2: The Road Warrior opens and closes with voiceover, as does 2015’s Mad Max: Fury Road. But in those cases, the narration served a basic expositional purpose, providing basic information for those who have not seen the previous films — something particularly important for The Road Warrior, as few Americans had the opportunity to watch 1979’s Mad Max.
But as Anya Taylor-Joy steps in for Charlize Theron in Furiosa, the narrator serves a different, more important in-universe purpose.
In a recent interview with EW, Furiosa director George Miller shed some light on this voice from the shadows. “That’s a narrator called the History Man,...

Ariana Grande and Cynthia Erivo were excited to share how Wicked finally made it to the big screen with them in the starring roles.
“Like theater geeks worldwide, they’ve waited more than 20 years for the Wicked musical to be adapted for the screen. Directors as varied as J.J. Abrams, Ryan Murphy, and Rob Marshall were all reported to have circled the movie at some point; rumor has it actors like Lea Michele and Amy Adams did too. For years, Stephen Daldry was attached to direct, but that version fell apart. Why did it all take so long?”
