On February 29, CBS began airing Elsbeth, a series about a lawyer who uses her autism spectrum disorder to help catch criminals alongside the New York City Police Department.
What is Elsbeth About?
If you've seen The Good Wife and The Good Fight, you'll recognize Carrie Preston's character, Elsbeth Tascioni. She is a cheerful and spontaneous lawyer who leaves her native Chicago for a solo project. Elsbeth has a form of autism spectrum disorder that does not interfere with her ability to solve complex professional problems.
She comes to New York at the invitation of the local mayor's office to help the police. They are not happy with the intrusive supervision, but quickly turn their anger to compassion – Elsbeth is charming and has amazing powers of observation.
Elsbeth is a procedural where each episode has its own story. If you haven't seen the previous two shows in which Elsbeth appeared,...

The political drama show The Good Wife starring Julianna Margulies may have ended its run of seven years back in 2016, but the show’s universe keeps expanding to this day.
Now that CBS has given an entire brand new show to The Good Wife’s cameo character, the idea to mix it all up and bring more of familiar faces back to the screen seems even more tempting — at least for the devoted fans.
The original show follows Alicia Florrick, a housewife with two kids to raise and an ended career of a successful attorney under her belt. After Alicia’s husband Peter gets into a public sex scandal and then is taken to jail for political corruption, her life’s new reality forces Alicia to come back to her professional roots in a need of providing for her children.

The television world was shocked when word dropped that the CBS drama So Help Me Todd was canceled after two seasons on the network.
It was surprising because the series, while not the network's most-watched, was doing well in the ratings, and considering the state of broadcast television, a series averaging six million viewers in +7 ratings should be a lock for renewal.
But that wasn't the case, and it has us, as well as its ardent fans, seriously perplexed.
When any show gets canceled, there are various first reactions. Unfortunately, some shows have cancelation written all over them, while sometimes the news does catch people off guard.
So Help Me Todd falls into the latter, which could be a decision that haunts the Eye Network.
Why Was So Help Me Todd Canceled?
Isn't that the biggest question of them all?
CBS is the land of major, long-standing series, with the likes of NCIS,...

It can certainly be said that Elsbeth Season 1 Episode 5 took a detour from the camp of theater, reality TV, and high-profile matchmaking.
Serving a more serious tone, "Ball Girl" gets right into play, putting a spotlight on Cliff McGrath, played by Quantico alum Blair Underwood.
In full-circle fashion, Underwood even had a guest appearance on The Good Wife Season 7 Episode 17.
And while he definitely brought his top-tier acting skills, it wasn't enough to make up for the story's shortcomings.
This episode had trouble picking its tone and asked many viewers to suspend belief beyond a regular person's capabilities.
First, there's the means of the murder: a nitroglycerin-dosed towel that reacts fatally to the erectile dysfunction medication already in the victim's system.
Speaking of towels, the writers must've thrown in theirs trying to come up with a clever way to kill off the deceased before settling on accidental double dosage by cotton blend.

Across broadcast and streaming, Elsbeth is netting nearly 11M viewers after 35 days of viewing. That’s up 52% from CSI: Vegas’ performance in that time slot last year.

Streaming channels make headlines with mergers and syndication deals, but CBS has reached its level of network television success simply by maintaining a well-stocked lineup of scripted shows.
Boasting consistently high ratings, CBS proves there is indeed a large audience that tunes in for scripted television outside of streaming channels.
This is good news for viewers searching for network alternatives to reality shows.
The potentially bad news is that almost all of CBS's scripted shows are procedurals and reboots.
Is this narrow focus a conscious decision or just a response to upcoming structural changes at the network?
Two of their biggest comedies (Young Sheldon and Bob Hearts Abishola) are set to end in May. CBS's procedural landscape will also take a hit when Blue Bloods concludes its fourteen-season run this fall.
CBS has enjoyed impressive numbers over the years by coasting on Chuck Lorre's sitcoms and all of the "I" franchises: NCIS,...

Third in a series on broadcast network series renewals. CBS will have some painful cancellation decisions to make this spring. With three new drama series, NCIS: Origins, Matlock and Watson, on tap for next season, S.W.A.T. surprisingly uncanceled and the Australian NCIS: Sydney, originally only intended as a temporary replacement during the strike, also renewed for 2024-25, the network will have to do some slate purging to make room for the additions.
That will likely impact more than one of the remaining CBS drama series whose fate has not been determined, The Equalizer, NCIS: Hawai’i, Elsbeth, So Help Me Todd and CSI: Vegas, a group that includes the network’s current dramas with a female lead. It features series that would not be canceled under normal circumstances. CBS’ schedule this season has been performing well, led by new breakout hit Tracker, and all five dramas in...

CBS's Elsbeth made a splash with its debut, but afterward, audiences had to wait two months for more.
When it returned, it established itself as a quirky, lighthearted murder mystery series, though there is a darker overarching plot surrounding the lawyer's secret investigation into her new boss.
By now, it's clear this series is nothing like The Good Wife despite being a spinoff, but that doesn't necessarily mean it's lost its way.
Elsbeth is far more formulaic than The Good Wife, so it may appeal to a different audience. The Good Wife was a dark satire (not necessarily funny) about complex legal issues and the sacrifices people made to gain political points. Elsbeth is none of that.
The title character was a quirky attorney on The Good Wife, and as expected, she's the same on Elsbeth. She also is the lead in a cozy mystery show, which may not...

Fans of Elsbeth Tascioni, rejoice! The quirky and brilliant lawyer from The Good Wife and The Good Fight continues her adventures in her own detective series, Elsbeth. Creators Robert and Michelle King drew inspiration for the spin-off from an unlikely source: rewatching the classic detective show Columbo during the pandemic. Carrie Preston reprises her Emmy-winning role, infusing Elsbeth with the same lovable charm as she pivots from the courtroom to the crime scene. She assists the NYPD in murder investigations, bringing her unique skills and unconventional methods to the table. Preston was already on board with a potential Elsbeth-centric show even before the pitch, having noticed the Columbo comparisons herself. Brooklyn Nine-Nine alumna Melissa Fumero, AnnaSophia Robb (The Act) and Ben Rappaport (For the People) are set as leads in Grosse Pointe Garden Society, NBC’s drama pilot from Jenna Bans, Bill Krebs and Universal Television, a division of Universal Studio Group.
The drama follows four members of a suburban garden club — three of them played by Fumero, Robb and Rappaport — all from different walks of life, who get caught up in murder and mischief as they struggle to make their conventional lives bloom.
Fumero plays Birdie. Entitled, rich, swathed in Chanel, a smoker, a drinker, self-destructive at times, toxic at others, but not without real pain beneath her facade, Birdie is a successful author whose memoir, “Digging for Gold: Dancing Through Divorce,” is a bestseller.

Michael J. Fox was a heartthrob back in the ’80s and ’90s thanks to his many memorable roles in the Back To The Future series, Teen Wolf, The Hard Way, Life with Mikey, and more. The actor’s memorable performances and down-to-earth personality earned him a huge fan following.
Hence, many hearts across the world were broken when he revealed his Parkinson’s diagnosis in 1998. However, the actor had been secretly fighting the progressive degenerative disorder for seven years at that point. Despite his disease, the actor appeared in many hit projects throughout the 2000s and 2010s. He was a regular in the CBS drama series The Good Wife which aired from 2010 to 2016.
However, in 2020, the star announced his retirement from onscreen work. The decision came due to Parkinson’s impacting his ability to memorize and remember lines. Now, four years later, he is willing to return to acting under one sole condition.

Elsbeth: Pictured: Carrie Preston as Elsbeth Tascioni Photo: Michael Parmelee/CBS ©2024 CBS Broadcasting, Inc. All Rights Reserved. The Good Wife continues to live on through a second spinoff series: Elsbeth, featuring the recurring character played by Carrie Preston on both The Good Wife and its first spinoff, The Good Fight. The new series is certainly more lighthearted than The Good Wife, playing heavily on the Elsbeth character’s quirky personality and unconventional ways of solving cases. Robert King, who — with his wife, Michelle — created both The Good Wife and Elsbeth, talked about how they were envisioning an Elsbeth series, they kept coming back to one classic character: Peter Falk’s legendary detective from Columbo. Michael J. Fox says he’d consider acting again.
Despite stepping away from acting in 2020, Fox – diagnosed with Parkinson’s disease at age 29 in 1991 – now says he would consider performing again.
“If someone offers me a part and I do it and I have a good time, great,” Fox said in a new interview with Entertainment Tonight. “I would do acting if something came up that I could put my realities into it, my challenges, if I could figure it out.”
Fox, the Back to the Future and Spin City star, was speaking to the media prior to a charity event for his Michael J. Fox Foundation.
“My goals are always shifting. My biggest goal, I think, was to raise a family. We have four amazing kids, and that’s been the big thing,” said Fox, who has been married to his Family Ties costar Tracy Pollan since 1988. “And then...

The first episode of the new CBS series Elsbeth aired back in late February and now the network is finally airing the second episode!
Back-to-back new episodes of the Carrie Preston-led series will air Tonight (April 4) beginning at 9/8c on CBS.
For those who don’t know, Elsbeth follows Carrie‘s beloved recurring character Elsbeth Tascioni from The Good Wife, though the new series is not billed as a spin-off.
“For me, a spinoff means a continuation of the world in some way,” creator Robert King told the Los Angeles Times. “I did think of The Good Fight as being a spinoff of The Good Wife. This feels like a really different show. It’s a different genre, a different tone.”
So, why the long wait?

Columbo wouldn’t know what to make of the technicolored outfits sported by amateur snoop Elsbeth Tascioni (played to quirky perfection by Emmy winner Carrie Preston). Yet the iconic TV detective, immortalized by the late Peter Falk and known for his shabby trench coat, would likely recognize a kindred spirit cut from the same metaphorical cloth. Elsbeth, a delightful spinoff built around a memorably offbeat character first introduced as a foil on Robert and Michelle King‘s The Good Wife and The Good Fight, is in good company. Peacock‘s terrific Poker Face, starring Natasha Lyonne as Charlie, an irreverent drifter with a gift for spotting murderous liars, follows a similar Columbo-like “how-catch-’em” light mystery format. We see the crime and the criminal—typically a well-known actor—before our hero even shows their face. Elsbeth’s madcap wardrobe and sunny sensibility, much like Columbo’s shambling demeanor and Charlie’s scrappy underdog persona,...

Exclusive: CBS’ Elsbeth will count on three additional guest stars for its Season 1 cast: Elizabeth Lail (Five Nights At Freddy’s), Arian Moayed (Succession) and Laura Benanti (The Gilded Age). Following a brief hiatus, the show returns April 4 with two episodes.
Elsbeth follows the titular Elsbeth Tascioni (Carrie Preston), an astute but unconventional attorney who utilizes her singular point of view to make unique observations and corner brilliant criminals alongside the NYPD following her successful career in Chicago. The character first appeared in The Good Wife and later in The Good Fight spinoff.
In addition to Preston, Wendell Pierce and Carra Patterson round out the series regular cast as Captain Wagner and Kaya Blanke, respectively. Gloria Reuben recurs as Wagner’s wife, Claudia Payne. My guest this week is Renée Elise Goldsberry.
A Tony and Grammy winner and Emmy nominee for her Broadway performance in Hamilton, Goldsberry starred as Nettie in the original Broadway production of The Color Purple and as Mimi in Rent, along with roles in TV series The Good Wife and Zoey’s Extraordinary Playlist and the movie Tick, Tick… Boom! Now, you can see her flex both her acting and musical muscles in Girls5eva Season 3—the comedy series that earned Goldsberry Critics Choice nominations in 2022 and 2023. The show recently moved to Netflix for its third season.
Girls5eva follows an early aughts girl group as they try to get the band back together 20 years later. It’s a sort of Spice Girls reunion tour meets Spinal Tap with a side of Bridesmaids. Case in point: Goldsberry, as wannabe popstar Wickie Roy, announces that, like Billie Eilish, she too can have a documentary.
