Hugh Grant has picked the hill he wants to die on: A “Notting Hill” Easter egg, to be exact.
The deadpan actor revealed during a Wired video alongside “Dungeons & Dragons: Honor Among Thieves” co-stars Chris Pine and Michelle Rodriguez that he found the ending of 1999 rom-com “Notting Hill” to be “nauseating” due to a small detail director Roger Michell included.
“Notting Hill,” which has been considered by many a rom-com classic over the years, stars Julia Roberts as Anna Scott, a famous actress who falls for local British bookstore owner William Thacker (Grant) while filming on location. The final scene shows Anna cuddling with William on a park bench as he reads a novel, one that had a special meaning to late director Michell.
“In that nauseating moment on the bench at the end, I’m reading ‘Captain Corelli’s Mandolin’ by Louis de Bernières, which was going to be his next film,...

"To us teenagers, she was a babe!" Madman Films has released an official trailer for the documentary film Elizabeth, a biopic profile of the iconic Queen of England. This film is made by the acclaimed filmmaker Roger Michell, known for his many features over the years including Notting Hill, Changing Lanes, Venus, Morning Glory, Hyde Park on Hudson, Le Week-end, My Cousin Rachel. His latest is this - a documentary on the life of Queen Elizabeth II, the longest-lived, longest reigning British monarch and longest serving female head of state in history. Why now? Who knows! "With extraordinary access to rare footage from the Royal Archives, Elizabeth is a cinematic celebration of an icon that reveals a unique glimpse of the woman behind the legend." It sounds like it won't be critical because it's more of a look at this woman and her life, not so much a commentary about...

For its list of new releases of February 2022, HBO Max is bringing back one of its biggest original series.
The Ridley Scott-directed sci-fi epic Raised by Wolves helped launch HBO Max back in 2020 and now it’s finally back for another season. Raised by Wolves season 2 premieres with three episodes on Feb. 3. This season will continue the conflict between future atheists and theists on a remote planet, while two androids raise some kids.
February 2022 also sees the end of another, more recent HBO Max hit. Peacemaker airs its finale on Feb. 17. Thankfully that same day sees the premiere of another exciting original. Dream Raider is a Mandarin-language sci-fi thriller that carries some big Inception vibes.
There aren’t many original movies of note this month, but there are a lot of recent hits coming to HBO Max as library titles. Nightmare Alley arrives on Feb. 1, followed by The Many Saints of Newark on Feb.

"What's he actually asking for?" "140,000 Pounds." "For what?" "Charity." "Good grief!" Sony Classics has debuted a follow-up official US trailer for the kooky British crime comedy film The Duke, the latest from filmmaker Roger Michell. This premiered at last year's Venice Film Festival and is opening in cinemas in the UK this September, then in the US later this fall. In 1961, Kempton Bunton, a 60 year old taxi driver, steals Goya's portrait of the Duke of Wellington from the National Gallery in London. This is the story of how, why, and who he was. It turns out he was just a bumbling British guy who didn't like paying for the BBC and wanted to come up with a scheme to make them change. Jim Broadbent stars as Kempton, with Helen Mirren, Matthew Goode, Charlotte Spencer, Fionn Whitehead, and John Heffernan. This is a ...

Bill Murray reaped his seventh Globes bid this year for the Apple TV+ film “On the Rocks,” which reunited him with writer-director Sofia Coppola with whom he first worked on 2003’s “Lost in Translation.” That role won him Best Comedy Actor at these awards and he stands out among this year’s Supporting Actor contenders with the most comedic performance.
He faces off against dramatic turns by Daniel Kaluuya (“Judas and the Black Messiah”), Sacha Baron Cohen (“The Trial of the Chicago 7”), Leslie Odom, Jr. (“One Night in Miami”), and Jared Leto (“The Little Things”). Cohen won for “Borat” and has five career nominations. Kaluuya was nominated for “Get Out.” Leto prevailed in this category for “Dallas Buyers Club” and went on to win the Oscar. Odom Jr. is a double nominee this year, with a second bid for Best Original Song.

“On the Rocks” is the long-awaited reunion between writer-director Sofia Coppola and actor Bill Murray, who previously achieved success together with the 2003 film “Lost in Translation” (though they also teamed up on the Emmy-nominated holiday special “A Very Murray Christmas” in 2015). It was released on October 2 by A24 in advance of its October 23 premiere on Apple TV+. Does it meet the high expectations they’ve set for themselves?
As of this writing the film has a MetaCritic score of 74 based on 38 reviews counted thus far: 32 positive and 6 somewhat mixed, but none outright negative. Over on Rotten Tomatoes, the film is rated 89% fresh based on 92 reviews, only 10 of which are classified as rotten. The Rt critics consensus says that the film “isn’t as potent as its top-shelf ingredients might suggest, but the end result still goes down easy — and offers high proof of Bill Murray’s finely aged charm.”

Seriousness is so overrated. In an apparent bid for gravitas, the year’s box-office busting, critic-charming musical, “A Star Is Born,” opted to compete in the Golden Globes drama category. That choice might have triggered a sense of inferiority in the jolly musical or comedy gang — but, no! The musical or comedy category is often the Hollywood Foreign Press Assn.’s most interesting, and could boost such films as “Green Book” or “Mary Poppins Returns” or “Crazy Rich Asians” in the game of Oscar best picture thrones.
Recently, best picture winners “The Artist” (2011) and “Birdman” (2014) emerged from the musical or comedy grab bag (where the latter lost to Wes Anderson’s “The Grand Budapest Hotel”). In 2002, “Chicago” heralded the comeback of the movie musical. It won the category and went on to win six Oscars including best picture.
Sometimes, the winners of the two top Golden Globes categories go head-to-head at the Oscars.

On a rather dreary day, Roger Michell and his crew sat down with Dames Joan Plowright, Maggie Smith, Eileen Atkins, and Judi Dench, and oh, what a joy it is to watch. Audiences familiar with the women should know what to expect with Michell’s delightful and touching “Tea with the Dames.” Bringing together the four extraordinary actresses, one could only hope for wisdom to be imparted and talent to be recognized.

Kate Winslet, Diane Keaton, and Mia Wasikowska have signed on to star in “Blackbird,” a remake of Bille August’s Danish-language “Silent Heart,” with Roger Mitchell directing.
Millennium Films is producing the movie. Producers are Sherryl Clark and Millennium’s David Bernardi. Millennium’s Avi Lerner, Trevor Short, Boaz Davidson, Jeffrey Greenstein, and Jonathan Yunger are executive producing.
Mitchell will direct from a script by “Silent Heart” screenwriter Christian Torpe. Shooting is planned for August in London.
Keaton will play a terminally ill mother who brings her family together for one last weekend before she commits suicide. Winslet and Wasikowsa will play her daughters.
In “Silent Heart,” released in 2014, the mother was suffering from amyotrophic lateral sclerosis and was planning to pursue euthanasia with the help of her husband at the end of the weekend. But the decision became difficult to handle for the daughters and brought old conflicts to the surface.

The 9th of June sees the UK cinema release of My Cousin Rachel, the latest film adaptation of Daphne du Maurier’s 1951 novel. Rachel Weisz leads the film as the titular relative, a leading role that complements her sterling work in Mick Jackson’s Denial, Yorgos Lanthimos’ The Lobster among others.
She and Sam Claflin are perhaps the biggest names in the film, which is directed by Roger Michell whose previous films include Notting Hill, Morning Glory and Hyde Park on Hudson. The film co-stars Iain Glen (Game of Thrones) and Holliday Grainger (Their Finest Hours), and our interviews with them will be up on th esite shortly.

This evening at Picturehouse Central in London (one of our most favourite cinematic hotspots in the capital) Roger Michell’s latest film was given its UK premiere. My Cousin Rachel is based on the 1951 novel by Daphne DuMaurier and plunges expectant audiences into a rich lake of revenge and romance – just the thing to block out the real world for a couple of hours.
Rachel Weisz and Sam Claflin lead the film, directed by Michell whose previous films include Notting Hill, Morning Glory and Hyde Park on Hudson. The film co-stars Ian Glen (Game of Thrones) and Holliday Grainger (Their Finest Hours).
We couldn’t let the evening go by without asking Iain Glen about his role as Jorah in HBO’s Game of Thrones, Michell talked to us about James Bond films and Sam Claflin told us a little about a new role for him – as...

With a seemingly endless amount of streaming options — not only the titles at our disposal, but services themselves — we’ve taken it upon ourselves to highlight the titles that have recently hit the interwebs. Every week, one will be able to see the cream of the crop (or perhaps some simply interesting picks) of streaming titles (new and old) across platforms such as Netflix, iTunes, Amazon Instant Video, and more (note: U.S. only). Check out our rundown for this week’s selections below.
The Diary of a Teenage Girl (Marie Heller)
Writer-director Marie Heller paints an accurate, honest, and vibrant portrait of her young protagonist, Minnie (Bel Powley), in The Diary of a Teenage Girl. With the use of some beautiful hand-drawn animation, an enlightening and funny narration, and Powley’s versatile performance, this is about as intimate as a subjective picture gets. We experience the world as this young girl does.

The new year is upon us, and it’s time to clean up Netflix once again. Don’t fear too much though, as much as we hate to see some of our favorites leave Netflix, they do a pretty good job at adding some great new content. We lose Almost Famous, A Clockwork Orange, American Psycho, The Graduate, Planes, Trains and Automobiles and all the Rocky movies – and we get Intolerable Cruelty, Training Day, The Rundown and a new Netflix Original for Degrassi: The Next Class.

Few actors in Hollywood are quite as uniquely beloved as Bill Murray is. It’s almost beyond explanation, but he’s considered the movie industry’s wacky uncle in a way. With the release this weekend of his newest film Rock the Kasbah (which I have to admit, I have yet to see), I wanted to honor Murray by running down what I consider to be his best performances to date. It’s of course my own personal list, so keep that in mind, but he’s someone who is hopefully one day going to win an Academy Award, so there’s no shortage of quality work to pull from. Behold the list below… Here now is what I feel are Murray’s ten best performances so far: 10. Zombieland – One of the great modern celebrity cameos is Murray playing himself in this action/comedy/horror hybrid. It was also one...

Bill Murray is a bona-fide legend. Simply mentioning his name is enough to make anyone who has ever seen one of his films break out into an impassioned smile. Even the people who have seen Garfield. While over the last few years Murray has turned himself into a refined, dramatic leading man with his turns in Lost In Translation, Broken Flowers, and Hyde Park On Hudson, it’s comedy where he originally won all of our hearts. But when and where has Bill Murray been at his most amusing? Well, to celebrate the release of Rock The Kasbah, here’s a look at Bill Murray’s funniest roles. 10. Space Jam Bill Murray just about steals Space Jam from Daffy Duck, Michael Jordan, and Babs and Bugs Bunny, popping up and providing laughs at every possible opportunity. The proud Chicagoan wasn’t going ...

If treated properly, historical biopics on famous leaders can be inspirational - or at the very least entertaining in a thought provoking manner. We.ve seen it with Frost/Nixon, Hyde Park On Hudson, and even with the recent Netflix series Marco Polo. If you handle the facts with enough dramatic flourish, people will take notice. As if taking its cues from that very Netflix series, as well as HBO.s Game Of Thrones, the producers behind the 300 franchise are ready to tell the tale of Julius Caesar in a similarly thrilling manner. Variety broke the scoop that producers Gianni Nunnari and Mark Canton, veterans of both 300 and 300: Rise Of An Empire, have jumped on board as two of the producers for Emperor, an upcoming film about Julius Caeser. According to the trade, the project will aim to tell the untold story of the Rome.s great leader. following...

It looks lovely and Ian McKellen is amazing, of course, but it’s not very Holmesian. I suspect Holmes himself would snort in derision at its sentimentality. I’m “biast” (pro): big fan of Sherlock Holmes and Ian McKellen

I love Sherlock Holmes in all his many incarnations, and when I heard that director Bill Condon was making a movie about an elderly Holmes played by Ian McKellan, I cheered. The two had previously collaborated on the wonderful Gods and Monsters — about the classic Frankenstein filmmaker James Whale in his later years — so this new film was bound to be great, wasn’t it? We love to spend the holidays with Bill Murray. There's Ghostbusters II on New Year's Eve, Hyde Park on Hudson on President's Day, Groundhog Day on Groundhog Day and, of course, Scrooged at Christmas*. Now we're going to have more of the actor to watch on that last holiday, because he's starring in a special called A Very Murray Christmas, which will debut on Netflix this December. Fans of Scrooged should be happy with the program, as one of that movie's screenwriters, Mitch Glazer, is now co-writing this with Murray and Sofia Coppola, who is also directing the special. Elizabeth Wilson, the actress who played Dustin Hoffman's mother in The Graduate, passed away on Saturday in New Haven, Ct, at the age of 94. Her death was confirmed to The New York Times by Elizabeth Morton, a close friend whom she considered a daughter. Elizabeth's first acting role was an uncredited appearance in Alfred Hitchcock's Notorious in 1946. She worked with Hitchcock again in 1963 and got a proper credit when she starred as Helen Carter in The Birds. Elizabeth then made a name for herself as a character actress both on stage and on film and also had notable roles in movies like 9 to 5, The Addams Family, and Quiz Show. She won a Tony Award in 1972 for her portrayal of a Vietnam War veteran's mother in David Rabe's Sticks and Bones. As bizarre a headline as that is, it’s true – three-time Oscar nominee Laura Linney, best known for her powerhouse parts in films such as Mystic River and TV series like HBO’s John Adams, has become the latest star to board Paramount’s big-budget sequel Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles 2.
The nature of Linney’s role is, at least for now, a closely guarded secret.
Megan Fox and Will Arnett will reprise the roles of reporter April O’Neil and cameraman Vernon Fenwick, while the sequel will also see Arrow actor Stephen Amell, Brian Tee, Tyler Perry and supermodel Alessandra Ambrosio join the cast as the heroic Casey Jones, archvillain the Shredder, scientist Baxter Stockman and an unspecified love interest for Vernon, respectively. As with Linney’s involvement, news of Perry’s casting was met with surprise followed by mild amusement.

Chicago – “Garfield, maybe” was the sole utterance of regret that iconic actor/prolific movie-golfer Bill Murray expressed in 2009’s “Zombieland” before he died. Should the adoration for this cameo resurrect him for that film’s announced sequel, Murray will hopefully denounce “St. Vincent,” his most needless and perverse career choice since vocally birthing “Garfield” (and yes, that includes getting a handjob as Franklin Delano Roosevelt in 2012’s also terrible “Hyde Park on Hudson”).
Rating: 1.5/5.0
Unpromising writer/director Ted Melfi’s “St. Vincent” is a film that is so ordinary with its story construction that its only substantial charm is indeed Murray’s casting. Australian producers increasingly are looking to international co-productions as one solution to the difficulty of raising finance at home.

Filmmaker David Fincher has been away from the screen for a couple of years, since 2011's "Girl with the Dragon Tattoo" threatened to be a major Oscar force but settled for a handful of nods (and a surprising Best Film Editing victory). He's back this year with the Gillian Flynn adaptation "Gone Girl," which could be a major play for Fox as the studio looks to get its awards legs back after hitting a wall with "The Secret Life of Walter Mitty" last year. Well, an opening night berth at the 52nd annual New York Film Festival is certainly a great way for the studio to set the stage. It's a nice, and really, expected fit for a few reasons. When Fincher opened the festival four years ago with his critically acclaimed film "The Social Network," that sort of kicked Nyff into gear as new personnel began to see the...

After turning to crowdsource funding in his efforts to raise money for his long-planned Miles Davis film, House of Lies actor Don Cheadle is finally moving forward with Miles Ahead, which he’ll both star in and make his directorial debut on. Shooting begins this week in Cincinatti, and Entertainment Weekly just unveiled our first look at Cheadle in the role (below).
Carrying a trumpet and proudly sporting the jheri-curled mullet Davis made famous, Cheadle certainly looks the part. And if what we’ve been hearing about Miles Ahead so far is any indication, Cheadle’s appearance is just one of many reasons to be excited for this film. For one, the actor has shied away from the word biopic - Miles Ahead focuses on the jazz musician’s attempts to break out of his five-year silent period and into the music industry – as well as back into the heart...

It seems like it's been awhile since Bill Murray has had the lead role in a movie. The last film he really headlined was 2012s Hyde Park on Hudson. Other than that, he's only been taking on a bunch of smaller roles. He's back in comedic action though in a new film called St. Vincent, which looks fantastic! Murray is such an amazing actor, and it's so good to see him in top notch form in this film. The movie also stars Melissa McCarthy, Chris O'Dowd, and Naomi Watts.
The movie starts out with a single mother named Maggie (McCarthy), "who moves into a new home in Brooklyn with her 12-year old son, Oliver (Lieberher). Forced to work long hours, she has no choice but to leave Oliver in the care of their new neighbor, Vincent (Murray), a retired curmudgeon with a penchant for alcohol and gambling. An odd friendship...

Bill Murray became a movie star 35 years ago this week, upon the release of "Meatballs" on June 29, 1979. His lead role as the head counselor at a sub-par summer camp marked a number of firsts: his first of four movies with director Ivan Reitman (the others were "Stripes" and the two "Ghostbusters"), his first of six movies with writer Harold Ramis (the four Reitman films, plus "Caddyshack" and "Groundhog Day"), and his first taste of mega-stardom beyond his TV fame on "Saturday Night Live."
Since then, his career has taken on a trajectory unique in the history of film, one in which he's gone from comic goofball to dramatic thespian, from universally beloved to acquired taste, and from manic cynic to soft-spoken spiritual seeker. Through it all, however, there have been a few constants; no matter whether he's a grubby groundskeeper or a morose mogul: Murray's character is always the coolest...
