HBO’s The Last of Us from creators Craig Mazin and Neil Druckmann was named program of the year at the Rockie Awards gala at the Banff World Media Festival on Tuesday night.
The first season of the post-apocalyptic hit was shot in Alberta. Jason Loftus’ Canadian documentary Eternal Spring picked up the Grand Jury Prize for the highest-scoring project in the Rockies program.
“This is a culmination of a lot of work we’ve done related to human rights in China,” Loftus said as he accepted a trophy for the animated documentary about Falun Gong practitioners in China persecuted for their activism.
The Buffalo Rock Award went to the Star Trek franchise for its endurance with global fans.
In other prize-giving, The Office star Craig Robinson received the Peter Ustinov Comedy Award. Robinson, who is also executive producer and star of Peacock’s Killing It, hosted the Rockie Awards at the Banff festival.

HBO has released the trailer for its half-hour, six-part documentary series “Small Town News: Kpvm Pahrump,” which chronicles the heartwarming and humorous story of a Nevada news station.
Located in the small desert town of Pahrump, Nev., the privately owned station has been a labor of love for 23 years — and now plans to expand into the much larger Las Vegas marketplace, which would make it accessible to 2.6 million people.
As seen in the new trailer (which you can view up top), the series will follow the colorful and eccentric characters whose hard work has boosted the local network, as well as the community it serves.
“All of us work together, support each other,” news correspondent Eunette Gentry says in the trailer. “I’m genuinely happy, but as a side note, I have resting smile face.”
“Small Town News: Kpvm Pahrump” will consist of six episodes, with the first two episodes premiering Aug.

In 2019, journalist Ronan Farrow’s book, “Catch & Kill,” focused on the downfall of disgraced Miramax mogul Harvey Weinstein. Farrow’s reporting on the subject was published. The book was a critical and commercial success in a year that saw the #MeToo movement move with the power of a freight train. Two years out, we’re still seeking answers to the question of who’s been affected by everything started by #MeToo, with Weinstein still being the de facto man caught and (figuratively) killed by accusations.
“Catch & Kill: The Podcast Tapes” is an interesting experiment in that it feels like something that should have come out in the immediate aftermath of Farrow’s book. His podcast actually started in November 2019 and concluded around February 2020, so it’s hard to figure out why, in July 2021, there needs to be a glorified video podcast told as a six-episode series — well, short of corporate greed.

Documentary filmmakers Fenton Bailey and Randy Barbato are giving a face to the voices behind Ronan Farrow’s 2019 book “Catch and Kill: Lies, Spies, and a Conspiracy to Protect Predators” and subsequent podcast series.
In “Catch and Kill: The Podcast Tapes,” six half-hour episodes follow Farrow as he works to report on Harvey Weinstein’s predatory behavior.
Never before seen (only heard) interviews with the Weinstein survivors Rose McGowan and Ambra Gutierrez remind audiences of the pain they suffered and efforts Farrow went to as part of his journalistic storytelling
The series brings a new light to the story, and serves as “not just a Hollywood story, but every day every town story,” Bailey says, to shine a spotlight on how America as a whole has endorsed bullying culture.
Bailey and Barbato joined Variety via zoom to talk about their new series and its present-day importance.

The key to editing and scoring “Catch and Kill: The Podcast Tapes,” based on Ronan Farrow’s 2019 book of the same name, was honoring the story at heart and honing in on the key moment that drove each half-hour episode.
The six-episode HBO series collects unseen footage, archive interviews and insight into Farrow’s reporting process as he details the efforts behind the systematic abuse by Hollywood producer Harvey Weinstein, which helped kick-start the #MeToo movement.
Like the podcast and book, “Catch and Kill,” named for a practice often used by tabloid media, chronicles how Farrow landed the story and the difficulty he had getting it to air on television as he wrestled with NBC News. Interviews with the whistleblowers, Weinstein survivors Rose McGowan and with Ambra Gutierrez, the Italian model who wore a wire to assist police in nabbing him, are also features.

Ronan Farrow’s reporting on Harvey Weinstein — first his coverage in The New Yorker in 2017, then his metacoverage of what it took to get that story in his 2019 book “Catch and Kill” — helped to crystallize and define a moment in American cultural life. With the new documentary series “Catch and Kill: The Podcast Tapes,” Farrow amplifies that work, continuing to tell both the story of Weinstein’s predations and of his attempts to quash serious journalistic inquiry.
This will be familiar to many potential viewers. As the show’s title suggests, this series — directed by Fenton Bailey and Randy Barbato — is a spinoff of Farrow’s podcast, itself a spinoff of the “Catch and Kill” book. Anyone familiar with either will be revisiting a story they’ve encountered before. And yet as a primer for a new audience, this is a worthwhile bit of programming from HBO, keeping both Weinstein...

LeBron James might be out of the NBA playoffs, but he’s still angling to be a big part of the summer entertainment season. That’s because HBO Max’s list of new releases for July 2021 is highlighted by a very special sequel.
Space Jam: A New Legacy premieres on July 16. will find LeBron teaming up with the Looney Tunes in a Warner Bros. IP-extravaganza. Can ‘Bron and the Looney Tunes beat the Goon Squad before Warner Bros.’ server steals LeBron “Bronny” Jr.’s soul (or something)? Let’s hope so.
