Horror has been in Canada's snow for decades now, starting with the classic Cannibal Girls and Black Christmasin the early '70s, through the classic early Cronenberg years of Shivers, Rabid and The Brood in the late '70s. In the '80s, we got films like Prom Night, My Bloody Valentine and The Gate. In the past decade, we've had flicks like the Ginger Snaps series, Cube and PontyPool. In fact, you could even count the last three Dead movies by George A. Romero as Canadian — after all, he is a Canadian citizen now and made all three films in Toronto.
Being both a film writer and a host of a monthly horror film series called Fright Nights at the Projection Booth (based out of Toronto, Canada), I have noticed an incredible renaissance of grindhouse and horror directors coming out of Canada in the past few years. Southern Ontario,...

*full disclosure: a screener of this film was provided by Gravitas Ventures.
**here be spoilers.
Director/writer: Karen Lam.
Stained is an indie picture developed from three different production companies (Angel Entertainment, Opiate Pictures, Goonworks Films). This is director Karen Lam's first feature. And while the first two thirds of the film is struggling to finds its legs, the final third makes up for some slow pacing earlier. There are a few surprises here as well. The only question is: will viewers be able to make it all the way to the end? Stained has just been released this month on video-on-demand and this reviewer would only give this film a tepid recommend.
The story focuses almost exclusively and to its own detriment on Isabelle (Tinsel Korey). Isabelle is a youngish woman who owns a small bookstore in what looks like Saskatoon, Sk, based on this reviewer's travels there.

The DVD and theatrical releases of the horror and thriller films by Karen Lam, Danishka Esterhazy, Barbara Stepansky, and Susan Jacobson, respectively, are all released, like, now.
Kierston Wareing in Susan Jacobson's "The Holding"
Karen Lam's Stained is now on iTunes, Amazon, and can be bought at Barnes & Noble on DVD in Canada and the United States! Stained is about a reclusive book store owner, played by Tinsel Corey of Twilight fame, who begins to unravel when she gets back together with her abusive boyfriend. Karen Lam is a really great director; her short film Doll Parts is a selection of the Viscera 2011 Film Festival.
Danishka Esterhazy's Black Field, a gothic thriller (think "Wuthering Heights"), is being released this weekend of September 10th at the Toronto International Film Festival! It's also airing on Canada's Superchannel in October and can be purchased directly (in Canada only) through Century Street.

You know her as Emily, Sam's beautifully scarred fiancee in the 'Twilight' movies, but you probably wouldn't recognize Tinsel Korey walking down the street. While her 'Twilight' co-stars are constantly fawned over by diehard fans, Korey says that she can walk around incognito, since her character is somewhat disguised by the bangs and the scar.
Beyond 'Twilight,' Korey is best known as an indie movie queen. She garnered accolades for her role as Blue Girl in Carl Bessai's 'Unnatural & Accidental.' She's poised to wow audiences again in 'Stained,' which is being released on DVD on Aug. 30. This time around, she channels her inner dark side to play a schizophrenic serial killer.

Australia’s Girl.com recently had the chance to ask Tinsel Korey a few questions about both Breaking Dawn and her other upcoming work including Fishing Naked and Stained. Here Tinsel describes what it was like to resume the character of Emily Young for Breaking Dawn and how the makeup experience differed from that of New Moon and Eclipse. Read more below:
You were cast as Emily Young, the fiancée of Sam Uley over 800 other actresses. How did you react when you were told you had been cast?
Tinsel Korey: I was really excited. Especially since I thought I hadn’t done well on the audition. But I’m also my toughest critic.
The character, Emily is scarred from a previous incident with Sam Uley; can you talk about the time you spent in make up preparing for your role in the Twilight Saga movies.
Tinsel Korey: We had different make up teams for the different movies. For New Moon the make up took three – four hours on the day; because we had two test days. For Eclipse they had to do the make up on set and try to match the first teams job, so it ending up taking eight hours, then five hours, then they got it down to three hours. Then in Breaking Dawn they had a new type of scar material, and it only took two hours. It is quite a process for sure.
Were you sad to say goodbye to filming the Twilight Saga when you finished part 1 of Breaking Dawn?
Tinsel Korey: Of course, it’s a chapter in your life ending. I remember being at dinner with everyone, and was like “Are we all still going to be friends after this ends?”
How has your life changed since being cast in the Twilight Saga?
Tinsel Korey: I guess the amount of attention I get has changed. But how I perceive my reality hasn’t, I always remember to stay humble. As fast as something is given to you, it can be taken away just as fast!
In the movie you are a motherly figure to Sam Uley’s werewolf pack, how are you similar to the character of Emily Young?
Tinsel Korey: I take care of the boys the same way. Always acting like the big sister, and making sure they’re okay.

Drafthouse Films, Timpson Films, and Magnet Releasing have hired a whopping two women to be a part of the 26-chapter horror anthology film The ABCs of Death.
The film, which will begin shooting in June 2011, is based on the idea that each director is assigned a letter from the alphabet representing a horrific word to act as a springboard for a short horror movie. Think , "A is for Autopsy", "B is for Bog Monster", et cetera.
The 25 directors chosen to be a part of this are all fairly new, young-ish up-and-comers like Jason Eisener (Hobo With a Shotgun), Nacho Vigalondo (TimeCrimes), Srdjan Spasojevic (A Serbian Film), Banjong Pisanthanakun (Shutter), Adrian Garcia Bogliano (Cold Sweat), Ernesto Diaz Espinoza (Mirageman), Gadi Harel (DeadGirl), Thomas Malling (Norwegian Ninja), Yoshihiro Nishimura (Tokyo Gore Police), Simon Rumley (The Living and the Dead), Tak Sakaguchi and Yuji Shimomura (Yakuza Weapon), Marcel Sarmiento (DeadGirl), Timo Tjahjanto (Macabre...

We're co-running the Viscera Film Festival, showing the best new short horror films directed by women, just like we did last year. Here's our 2011 lineup.
It's been pretty cut-throat. Out of over 80 submissions, we struggled and wept and co-director Shannon Lark and I beat each other up over what our final lineup would be. In the end, we decided, only the best of the best could play, so we counted and recounted our judges tallies and agreed that again we'd show way too many films and have our fest run way too long.
These films are just too good to not screen. We couldn't eliminate any of them. I have to be honest: I love every film on this list. We're got some Us premieres that we're especially excited about! The 2011 Viscera Film Festival Films are:
The Party’S Over by Gigi Romero
Bon Apetit by Kate Shenton

It's always great to see "Twilight" cast members getting along off-screen, and there were a couple of shout-outs bouncing around the Twitter-Wood feed today. Edi Gathegi wished Christian Serratos could be with him on a plane ride, but he had to settle for her advice on candy shenanigans. Elsewhere, Tinsel Korey sought Chaske Spencer's glitter skills in some Advent calendar construction.
In non-"Twilight" tweets "I'm on a Boat" seems to be a popular pick among the Grammy nominations this year, and Seth Meyers was among the first to back it. Check out those posts after the jump, along with Richard Kelly's new prospective "Donnie Darko 3" premise and Danny DeVito's Thanksgiving Troll Foot costume. For the record, I always link back to the source and cite everyone's tweets that I use from the Twitter-Wood follow list, including Edgar Wright. That's more than can be said for an edited version of an Edward Woodward memorial he wrote on his blog that showed up in edited form on the Times website, though, according to his posts today.
I do make a minimal number of edits, such as the f-bomb in Ice-t's Twitter Pic of the Day winner today, which was followed by yet another Brett Ratner/Michael Jackson pic. You need see that one for the giant wig along. Check it all out after the jump along with a "New Moon" cast shot from Gil Birmingham, Alyson Hannigan's musical Joss Whedon nostalgia and Jamie Campbell Bower's befuddlement over Justin Bieber. It's all in the Twitter-Wood report for November 19, 2009.

It comes as no surprise that supporting cast members in "New Moon" would try to splinter off their own factions in the endless "Team Edward vs. Team Jacob" debate, but it looks like BooBoo Stewart's got at least one backer for Team Seth, judging from his TwitPic upload today. Tinsel Korey, meanwhile, remains firmly behind Team Jacob.
In non-"Twilight" posting today, Danny DeVito had a nice showing for his birthday last night, even if his picture wasn't high enough quality to make Twitter Pic of the Day. Neil Patrick Harris posted a new shot from the "How I Met Your Mother Set" and David Wain contributed a courtside view from the Lakers game. Check out all of those after the jump where you'll also find out which actress enjoys dancing to Lady Gaga and which actor claims he's the only one who didn't audition for "Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen.

Edward Woodward, the actor best remembered for his starring role in the TV series "The Equalizer" and his once-in-a-lifetime performance in the original pre-bees "Wicker Man," commanded a mountain of memorial tweets today. Simon Pegg, Edgar Wright and even Seth Meyers posted memories and favorite performances amid the news of his passing, and I join them. If you haven't seen him in 1973's "The Wicker Man," you're missing out on one of the all-time great horror/musical productions.
There were "New Moon" tweets today, too, of course. Peter Facinelli spent his pre-premiere morning getting his driver's license renewed, while Tinsel Korey posted a pic from outside and BooBoo Stewart prepped at the gym. Check out their tweets after the jump along with a Twitter Pic of the Day starring Michael Jackson and an "Iron Man 2" note from Jon Favreau. I'm @brianwarmoth, and this is the Twitter-Wood report for November...

"Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2" might as well have been a major Hollywood premiere last night, because Twitter-Wood was all over it and Ice-t even posted a shot of himself with the pair of nightvision goggles packaged with the game's Prestige Edition bundle. Other first-day buyers included Fred Durst, Diablo Cody, and possibly Michael Ian Black, whose snark is sometime difficult to see through.
In a follow-up tweet, Korey Tinsel revealed that she still doesn't have a dress for the "New Moon" premiere, so she may be forced to do something desperate. All of those tweets and more are waiting after the jump, along with an impressive home security camera video taken by producer Dana Brunetti that shows what happens when you try to steal plants from his yard. I'm @brianwarmoth and this is the Twitter-Wood report for November 10, 2009.

The Twitter-Wood feed started following its first canine today, as recent hacking victim and "Eclipse" actress Jodelle Ferland tweeted a pic referencing her dog "Genevieve Ferland." According to @gena_fur's Twitter account, Genevieve recently turned five, hates nail clippers and dressed as a princess last year for Halloween.
Lack of clothing was on the minds of two other "Twilight" series actors, though, as Tinsel Korey seems to have not yet found a dress for the "New Moon" premiere, and Charlie Bewley reported on his love of not wearing anything. Remarkably, I made none of this up. Check it out, along with an award Arnold Schwarzenegger recently presented to Kirk Douglas, a scandalous "Full House" photo and the reason "Iron Man 2" will show up to theaters late if it gets delayed. It's all in the Twitter-Wood report for November 6, 2009.

Tinsel Korey, who portrays Emily Young in The Twilight Saga: New Moon and The Twilight Saga: Eclipse, is one intelligent young woman. Korey took time out of her busy shooting schedule in Saskatoon, Canada (on the set of her psychological thriller film Stained) to talk about her work on the Twilight saga and more! Q: So you're filming Stained right now, is that right? A: Yeah, that’s correct. Q: Whats that movie about? A: It's sort of a psychological thriller. It goes through the life of this girl Isabelle, and she has schitzophrenia, and she has all these dimensions ... and she has to get past this urge to kill people. So it's sort of that journey and other stuff that goes on in her head, and I just have t ...

Karen Lam, director of 2007's amazing short horror film The Cabinet, has just secured financing for her first feature film, a psycho-thriller to be called Stained.
"We're just going into official prep and the shoot starts on October 19," says Lam. "It's about a crazy cat lady who actually is crazy."
Lam says the Canadian Stained will remind us of Repulsion and Audition. We can't wait!
