- Auro (Amitabh Bachchan) is an intelligent and witty 12-year-old boy with an extremely rare genetic disorder called Progeria. Mentally he is twelve and very normal, but physically he looks five times older. In spite of his condition, Auro is a very happy boy (he is not allowed to have anything with Chillis and has to eat bland food). He lives with his mother Vidya (Vidya Balan), who is a gynecologist and Vidya's mother Bum (Arundhati Nag). Amol Arte (Abhishek Bachchan) is a young, cold-blooded politician. He is out to prove to the world that "politics" is not a bad word. He is a man with a mission.
Auro is Amol's son; however, Vidya conceals this from him. Amol meets Auro when he visits the boy's school as a chief guest on their 50th anniversary function. He comes on the occasion of a competition on the "visionary of India". Amol decides Auro as the winner, impressed by the white globe he made (a world without boundaries and restrictions). But being with such a big politician Auro was found by the media. Somi (Taruni Sachdev) (Auro's classmate) has a crush on him, and he keeps running away from her. Vishnu (Prateek Katare) is Auro's best friend at school.
Vidya finds out on TV that Amol gave the award to Auro. She remembers the time when she dated Amol, when they studied together in London. They eventually had sex. When Vidya tells Amol that she is pregnant, he says he wants to do an MBA, join his father in politics and change the world. He wants Vidya to get an abortion. Vidya walks away from Amol. Vidya comes back to Bombay and Bum encourages her to have the baby if she wants to have it. Soon after birth, Auro is diagnosed with Progeria. With only 50 known cases in the whole world. Survival is doubtful beyond early teens 13-14 years at the max. No cure.
The next day the media tries to enter his school. Auro, annoyed at this, sends him an e-mail. Amol reads it and takes a restraining order from High Court stating that nobody can disturb him without permission. Auro, relieved, tells him of his desire to visit the president's house. But due Amol's political issues he fails to make it on the decided day. Auro was super excited and had prepared for the day by telling all his friends, and even going shopping specifically. Auro, however, loses confidence in him but later agrees to go to Delhi with him although he now knows that Amol is his father. Bum had insisted that Vidya tell the truth to Auro. Vidya agrees when the doctor tells him that he is nearing 80 in physical years and has very limited time left.
Mr. Kaushal Arte (Paresh Rawal) (Amol's father) is Amol's father. Kaushal cautions Amol that he is taking on Jaikirt (Satyajit Sharma) when he plans to redevelop a slum to give pukka houses to the slum dwellers and use the remaining area for commercial redevelopment. To counter Jaikirt, Amol meets each and every family in the slum. He obtains their signatures to vacate the land for the redevelopment project. Jaikrit counters Amol by saying that the land belongs to the people and Amol will only defraud them.
Jaikrit cuts the electricity supply to the slum and blames it on Amol to incite violence. Media picks the story and vilifies Amol as the "rich brat" out of touch with reality. Amol strikes back by sending homeless people to occupy the flats of media barons and capturing the whole episode on live TV. He explains that Govt is also just trying to protect its own property rights and perhaps now the media will understand what he is trying to do is a win-win situation. Amol wins public support for his project.
Though Amol does not know that Auro is his son, he takes him to Delhi to see the president's house. For some reason Auro comes back from the gate and this angers Amol, who had taken many permissions to get Auro in there. They spend a wonderful day together in Delhi and come back to Bombay. Auro's health gets bad and he is admitted to the hospital. Amol misses Auro and calls the house, only to find he is in the hospital. Amol reaches the hospital and finds Vidya and realizes that Auro is his son. Auro tries to get his mother and father back together, but Vidya resists. She is still hurt by the fact that Amol wanted her to have an abortion when they first found out she was pregnant.
Kaushal finds out and reaches the hospital, alarmed. He is totally against Amol admitting Auro as his son. Amol is adamant and asks his father to stay away from this matter. Amol realizes his mistake though, and proposes to Vidya, as he is still in love with her. He stays by Auro's side when he finds out that Auro is his son. Auro's health begins to deteriorate as he reaches his 13th birthday, his physical defects catching up. Jaikrit takes advantage of the news and puts the media after Amol. Amol goes on TV and admits the truth that Auro is his son.
Somi visits Auro in the hospital and apologizes for being horrified the first time she saw him. She says she was just taken aback, and perhaps hurt his feelings. But since then, she tried to apologize numerous times, and Auro always ran away from her. However, he is finally able to reunite his mother and father once again as Vidya gives in to her feelings for Amol and her motherly love for Auro. Auro, succumbing to his disease, says his last words "Maa" and "Paa" before dying with a satisfied smile.
