“Ghosts” star Rose McIver will direct her first episode of the series this season, the show’s panel told the audience at New York Comic Con Saturday. In addition to McIver, the panel featured Brandon Scott Jones, Sheila Carrasco and Román Zaragoza with “CBS Mornings” co-host Tony Dokoupil in the moderator chair.
The panel also announced that Sakina Jaffrey (“Billions,” “The Mindy Project” and “House of Cards”) and Bernard White will play Jay’s (Utkarsh Ambudkar) parents, Champa and Mahesh in the 1-hour Christmas special airing on Thursday, December 19.
The tagline for the two-part one-hour Christmas special (“A Very Arondekar Christmas Part 1” and “A Very Arondekar Christmas Part 2”) reads, “A leaky water heater mishap threatens to ruin holiday plans as Sam and Jay prepare to host Jay’s hard-to-please dad Mahesh (Bernard White), difficult-to-impress mom Champa (Sakina Jaffrey) and sister Bela (Punam Patel).”
“Ghosts” returned for its fourth season on Oct.

Memo to CBS News anchor Tony Dokoupil: Looks like the boss has your back (at least for now).
Shari Redstone, the controlling shareholder of Paramount Global, in some of her last days in that role, reprimanded executives at CBS News for telling staffers earlier this week that a sharp exchange on “CBS Mornings” between Dokoupil and author Ta-Nehisi Coates about his new book “The Message” had not met the news division’s editorial standards. The segment raised eyebrows both among viewers and internally, because it progressed into a tense back-and-forth as Dokoupil grilled Coates on whether his writing expressed antipathy toward Israel.
“I think we made a mistake,” said Redstone, while speaking at an event in New York City that was part of Advertising Week, an industry conference. “I think we made a bad mistake this week.”

On the evening of what should be a landmark moment — a “60 Minutes” election special with Vice President Kamala Harris airs Monday night — CBS News suddenly finds itself embroiled in l’Affaire Dokoupil, in which a new senior executive had to explain why the tone taken by one of the news division’s rising stars was inappropriate.
CBS News executives on Monday told staffers that a recent interview conducted by Tony Dokoupil on “CBS Mornings” failed to meet the network’s editorial standards, a decision that has spurred some pushback.

Jamie Foxx made his long-awaited return to the standup comedy stage in Atlanta over the weekend, where he opened up about his 2023 medical emergency in a humorous, but emotional one-man show.
“CBS Mornings” host Gayle King was backstage at the special, which was filmed for Netflix, and captured Foxx’s immediate reflections in an impromptu “interview” posted on social media. In the clip, the Oscar and Grammy winner is surrounded by a cheerful entourage who applaud his achievement. “You landed on the moon, man. Be so proud,” Foxx told the group as he opened a bottle of champagne to celebrate.
“I wanna know how you feel after three nights?” King then asked. “It was an excruciating time, opening those wounds every single day,” Foxx replied.

CBS News leadership announced to staff Monday morning that journalist Tony Dokoupil’s contentious approach to an interview with author Ta-Nehisi Coates failed to meet the organization’s editorial standards, following an internal review of the interview. Executives said that they addressed the interview with Dokoupil directly.
Coates appeared on “CBS Mornings” last week to discuss his new book, “The Message,” which includes criticism of Israel’s approach to its war against Hamas in Gaza following Coates’ own visit to Jerusalem. Co-anchor Dokoupil turned the focus to the portion of his book discussing Israel and asserting that the content of that section, without Coates’ name attached, “would not be out of place in the backpack of an extremist.”
Audio of the call with staff was obtained and released by Bari Weiss’ conservative Free Press outlet, which has taken a stance in support of Israel’s prosecution of its war in Gaza and beyond.

Errol Barnett, a veteran of CBS and CNN, will take up morning-anchor duties at 7 a.m. on CBS 24/7, the CBS News live-streaming hub. His tenure in the hour will start Monday.
Barnett appeared Friday morning as the hour’s current anchor, Anne-Marie Green, bid farewell. She is moving to “48 Hours.” “I know the show is in good hands,” Green told him. “I hope to bring that essence of curiosity and heart that you bring to the table,” he said, noting that coverage on his first day, October 7, would nod to the anniversary of Hamas’ attacks on Israel.
Barnett joined CBS News in 2016, and during his tenure has worked assignments as a weekend White House correspondent and a transportation reporter. He has also worked as a fill-in on “CBS Mornings,” “CBS Saturday Morning” and the “CBS Weekend News,” and he has examined issues pertaining to technology, including documentary features...

Hoda Kotb, an NBC News mainstay who stepped up to co-anchor the flagship hours of NBC’s “Today” when longtime host Matt Lauer was ousted in 2017, will leave the program at the beginning of next year, opening not one, but two important roles at the network’s flagship morning franchise.
Speaking Thursday morning on the program, Kotb cited a desire to spend time with two young daughters. “I realized it was time for me to turn the page,” after a recent 60th birthday, she told colleagues on the program. She noted that she had children later in life and that “they deserve a bigger piece of my time pie that I have.” She is expected to continue to contribute to the program after she departs in early 2025.

Gayle King took plenty of risks in her career and life to get where she is today, but admits one opportunity she received felt like she was “being punked.”
Earlier this month, she took a risk by eating a half-eaten slice of pie she received via delivery at her residence, which had fans concerned about her health.
The intriguing mystery about the pie slice appeared in multiple segments on CBS Mornings, which Gayle co-anchors and co-hosts on weekdays.
More recently, she opened up about another significant risk she took months ago, which other women called “brave” of her.
This week, she attended the Through Her Lens: The Tribeca Chanel Women’s Filmmaker Program luncheon, which supports women filmmakers.
During the event, Gayle participated in a People interview and spoke about accepting the offer to appear on a Sports Illustrated Swimsuit Issue cover.

Despite the hand flex heard round the world, Matthew Macfadyen doesn’t believe he fully embodied Mr. Darcy in Joe Wright’s “Pride & Prejudice.”
The 2005 film adaptation of Jane Austen’s iconic 1813 novel starred Macfadyen and Keira Knightley as the enemies to lovers British duo. The feature landed four Oscar nominations, including Best Actress for Knightley.
However, Macfadyen hadn’t “enjoyed” the production of the film, mostly because he believed he was miscast, especially following Colin Firth’s performance as the iconic romantic lead 10 years earlier in the 1995 BBC miniseries.
“I didn’t really [enjoy it],” the “Succession” Emmy winner said of his time making the film during “CBS Mornings” in the below video. “I feel bad saying that. There were moments I had a good time, but I wish I enjoyed it more. I wish I was less worried about it.”
Macfadyen continued, “I felt a bit miscast, like, ‘I’m not dishy enough.

Before he played Tom Wambsgans in the HBO series “Succession,” Matthew Macfadyen was perhaps best known for his performance as Mr. Darcy in Joe Wright’s 2005 “Pride & Prejudice” adaptation alongside Keira Knightley.

Macfadyen said his anxiety stemmed from feeling like he wasn’t a good fit for the role.

Lupita Nyong’o admits she was always afraid of cats, until an alien invasion changed her mind.
Nyong’o credits “A Quiet Place: Day One” for helping her overcome her felinophobia.
She plays Samira, accompanied by her cat, Frodo, as aliens invade Earth and take over New York City.
“I’ve been terrified of cats my entire life,” Nyong’o said in an interview last week with “CBS Mornings.”
“I wouldn’t be in a room with a cat, I would cry … I just found them suspicious, you know? They’re like little lions, and like, if they were any bigger, they would eat us.”
Nyong’o said she begged director Michael Sarnoski to consider a different animal for the part.
But instead, she tried exposure therapy, which involves releasing cats in her presence at her home. It worked.
Nyong’o now has an orange tabby cat named Yoyo.

In a surprising twist for the horror genre, the breakout star of “A Quiet Place: Day One” isn’t a terrifying alien or a human survivor, but a cat named Frodo. The latest installment in the hit franchise, directed by Michael Sarnoski, has garnered attention not only for its thrilling plot but also for its innovative use of live animal actors and the personal journey of its lead actress, Lupita Nyong’o.
Set on the day when sound-sensitive aliens invade Earth, the film follows Samira (Nyong’o) and her service cat, Frodo, as they navigate a suddenly silent and dangerous New York City. Sarnoski made the bold decision to use real cats instead of CGI, casting feline actors Schnitzel and Nico to portray Frodo.
“We managed to get through the whole movie without creating a CG cat, which was a big victory for us,” Sarnoski told Variety. This choice adds authenticity...

Jon Stewart continues to open up about his split from Apple after parting ways with the tech giant after hosting two seasons of “The Problem.” Stewart debuted the talk show in 2021 as part of a multi-year first-look deal with Apple. The first season of the show aired episodes every two weeks, while the second season switched to a weekly format. The streamer confirmed last October that Stewart’s program would not return.
“They didn’t censor me, it wasn’t free speech,” Stewart recently said on “The Town” podcast (via Rolling Stone) about the end of his Apple relationship. “When you work for a corporate entity, that’s part of the deal, even at Comedy Central. The deal is I get to do what I want until it’s going to hurt their beer sales or whatever it is they want to sell. And that’s the deal we all make.

Turns out it didn’t actually take a comet for R.E.M. to reunite. To celebrate their induction into the Songwriters Hall of Fame, Michael Stipe, Peter Buck, Mike Mills, and Bill Berry took the stage for a surprise performance at the Marriot Marquis Hotel in New York City on Thursday night. Gayle King shocked her audience on CBS Mornings when she announced that Oprah Winfrey had to cancel her Tuesday morning appearance. She told the audience that Oprah was in the hospital hooked up to IVs. It sounded bad and Gayle returned to update fans on Oprah’s current condition one day later.
Here is what Gayle had to say about Oprah Winfrey’s current medical condition.
Oprah Winfrey Is Recovering Slowly After Hospital Emergency
Oprah Winfrey canceled her appearance on CBS Mornings on Tuesday to help promote a new book from her book club recommendations — Familiaris by David Wroblewski. However, before the segment, Gayle gave the scary news that Oprah was rushed to a hospital and was hooked up to IVs.

Gayle even made the “Tmi comment” that it was “coming out of both ends.” The good news is that Winfrey didn’t seem angry about the comment.

The fate of CBS owner Paramount Global remains way up in the air, and the future of broadcast TV in general remains a big question mark. But as CBS Entertainment president Amy Reisenbach said on Tuesday at the Banff World Media Festival, that’s not stopping her from plotting her primetime development plans way into the future.
“What’s great as we’re talking about 2025-26, in some cases, we’ve even pinpointed places where we want to be developing for 2026-27 already,” she said. “That’s the joy of working at CBS, and with the schedule and the stability that we have on the schedule, that we can think that far in advance. We’re crazy if we’re not taking advantage of that.”
Reisenbach noted that the move away from a dedicated pilot season has allowed her to take time in developing shows like “Tracker” — which was picked...

Kim Godwin hoped to build ABC News’ future by cutting out some of its past.
Tasked, ostensibly, with shaking up a culture of the Disney-backed news organization that pit anchors against one another and led to claims of intolerable behavior behind the scenes, Godwin was supposed to revamp a storied journalism hub without losing any of the impetus that spurred employees to make shows such as “World News Tonight” and “Good Morning America” the most-watched in their category.
But the ABC News president, who was still working Monday after sending out a letter Sunday announcing her retirement following a shaky three-year reign, lost the support of much of the news operation by installing an array of senior executives who proved difficult to work with, while ousting veterans who had the respect of their colleagues. She also moved slowly, often taking weeks to make important decisions about programming and personnel, according...

Kim Godwin, the ABC News president who was the first Black woman to run a broadcast network news operation, is leaving the Disney unit amid increasing concern about the way she was managing the home of shows like “Good Morning America” and “World News Tonight.”
Godwin told staffers in a memo Sunday that she planned to “retire from broadcast journalism.” Her command had come under increasing scrutiny since a restructuring of ABC News and Disney’s ABC stations had her reporting directly to Debra OConnell, a Disney business veteran who is seen as a valued operator at the company. OConnell will lead ABC News for the foreseeable future, she told employees Sunday evening.
A Disney spokesperson declined to make executives available for additional comment or to respond to a query about what changes Godwin’s exit might mean for the executive’s immediate direct reports or the management of individual ABC News programs.

Boomer Esiason and Phil Simms will exit CBS’ long-running “The NFL Today” studio show as part of a revamp that brings former star quarterback Matt Ryan into the program’s line-up.
When viewers next tune in to the show as the NFL season kicks off this fall, they will see Ryan, known mostly for his time with the Atlanta Falcons, paired with James Brown, Nate Burleson, Bill Cowher and JJ Watt. The programming maneuvers have long been expected, but they are the first at CBS Sports under David Berson, who recently took the reins of the Paramount Global unit.
“Matt had an outstanding first year at CBS Sports, excelling as both a studio and game analyst,” said Berson, in a statement. “He is the consummate team player and a Hall of Fame person. We love the chemistry he has with the studio crew and we’re excited to see him...

Jon Stewart made headlines in February when he appeared on “CBS Mornings” ahead of his return to hosting Comedy Central’s “The Daily Show” and said that Apple canceled his previous talk show, “The Problem With Jon Stewart,” because “they didn’t want me to say things that might get me in trouble.” On the April 1 episode of “The Daily Show,” Stewart went into greater detail about Apple’s concerns over the direction of his now-axed talk show and corresponding podcast.
Stewart was interviewing Federal Trade Commission chair Lina Khan on “The Daily Show” and told her that he once pitched to have her as a guest on “The Problem” podcast. Considering Khan’s work at the FTC targets tech giants’ monopolistic practices, Apple allegedly did not want Stewart bringing her on the program to presumably talk about such topics.

Some 8 1/2 years after leaving his iconic host seat on “The Daily Show,” Jon Stewart returns to the Comedy Central staple tonight at 11 p.m. Et/Pt and will remain as host each Monday thereafter through the 2024 Election Cycle. His first guest be Zanny Minton Beddoes, editor-in-chief of The Economist. The debut episode will be simulcast on CMT, Logo, MTV, MTV2, Paramount Network, Pop and TV Land. The every-Monday hosting stint follows in the recent tradition of Rachel Maddow’s similar set-up at MSNBC.
Stewart hosted “The Daily Show” for 16 years, taking over from Craig Kilborn in 1999 and transforming it into appointment viewing with its blend of incisive media criticism and political satire. During Stewart’s tenure, the show won 24 Emmys and three Peabodys and served as a launch pad for the likes of Stephen Colbert, Steve Carell, John Oliver, Trevor Noah, Michael Che and Samantha Bee. Ahead of his return as host of Comedy Central’s “The Daily Show,” Jon Stewart stopped by “CBS Mornings” to explain why it was finally time to return to his old job. Stewart hosted the network’s flagship news show from 1999 to 2015. He’ll now be hosting only Monday episodes throughout the 2024 election cycle. Stewart said he needed a platform to speak about the upcoming election, which he no longer had after Apple canceled his talk show last year.
“I wanted a place to unload thoughts as we get into this election season,” Stewart said. “I thought I was going to do it over at — they call it Apple TV+. It’s a television enclave, very small. It’s like living in Malibu. But they decided … they felt that they didn’t want me to say things that might get me in trouble.”
Variety has reached out to Apple for comment.

Patrick Mahomes and Brock Purdy aren’t the only ones who are likely to be feeling intense pressure on Super Bowl Sunday.
Nate Burleson will be just as busy this weekend as the quarterbacks for the Kansas City Chiefs and the San Francisco 49ers. He is part of CBS’ “NFL Today” pre-game show. He will be helping to call the game for younger audiences as part of a Super Bowl simulcast on Nickelodeon, the kids-cable network that is, like CBS, owned by Paramount Global. And no matter how he fares in those programs, he must be ready to go again just hours later when he takes part in his regular job at “CBS Mornings.” After a full day of Sunday-night sportscasting, Burleson will have to be up and ready well before 4 a.m. Pacific Time.

When backlash over Bradley Cooper’s nose prosthetic in “Maestro” first erupted in August ahead of the film’s world premiere at the Venice Film Festival, Cooper himself could not speak out to defend his choice as it was in the midst of the SAG-AFTRA strike. He finally got the opportunity to do so during an interview with “CBS Mornings,” explaining that he first attempted to play famed composer Leonard Bernstein without the prosthetic but ultimately decided “we just had to do it.”
“Nothing catches me off guard,” Cooper said when asked about the initial backlash over the fake nose. “You never know what’s going to happen. I’ve done this whole project out of love and it’s so clear to me where I come from. My nose is very similar to Lenny’s actually. The prosthetic is actually like a silk sheet.”

SAG-AFTRA and the AMPTP are still at the negotiating table as we reach day 117 of the actors’ strike, but Tyler Perry argues that the union needs to recognize when it has won “for now.”
Appearing on “CBS Mornings” Tuesday, the film and TV mogul, who recently signed a multi-year first-look deal with Netflix, made his first public comments on the strike after co-signing a proposal sent to SAG-AFTRA brass in October calling for a revised residuals structure and removing the cap on union dues. Perry reminded that SAG-AFTRA is only negotiating a three-year contract, noting that prolonging the strike may only present a challenge in future and inevitable dealings.
“Here I am, a studio head and an owner of a streamer, but also understanding how it is for the working actor,” Perry said (via Variety). “I get what we’re fighting for … I paid Cicely Tyson $1 million for one day...

Tyler Perry appeared on “CBS Mornings” Tuesday and was asked to speak publicly for the first time about the SAG-AFTRA strike, which remains ongoing after the union responded to the AMPTP’s “best and final” offer by saying the two groups still differ on “several essential items.” Although Perry praised SAG-AFTRA negotiators, he also said the union needs to realize when it’s won “for now.” The media mogul noted that SAG-AFTRA is only negotiating a three-year contract, inferring that it might not be the best strategy to continue prolonging the strike so the union can get everything it wants now when more negotiations are in store in the future.

The road to the Super Bowl often comes with a few bumps. And then there’s the one Paramount Global is devising.
The entertainment conglomerate, parent of CBS, which will broadcast Super Bowl Lviii from Las Vegas on February 11, 2024, will construct a “Paramount Mountain” atop the popular Mirage Volcano at The Mirage at 3400 South Las Vegas Blvd in Las Vegas. The display will feature a “Paramount+ Lodge” and an ersatz gondola ride that will offer interactive fan experiences built around Paramount properties including “Transformers,” “Yellowstone,” “Star Trek, “Dora The Explorer,” “Ghosts,” “Sistas” and “UEFA Champions League.” The site will operate for four days, starting Thursday, February 8 and continuing through the Sunday Super Bowl game.
“Paramount’s ‘Mountain of Entertainment’ in Las Vegas is an exciting, fan-focused physical manifestation of the expansive and popular content from across our portfolio of brands,” said Josh Line, executive vice president and chief brand officer,...

Blue Ivy Carter's name has been synonymous with success since day one. As the daughter of Beyoncé and Jay-Z, the 11-year-old has navigated inherited fame like a pro. At 8 years old, she was nominated for a Grammy for her contributions to Beyoncé's "Brown Skin Girl." More recently, Blue Ivy guest starred as a backup dancer on her mom's "Renaissance" Tour, showcasing her mastery over the complex choreography. On Oct. 27, however, Jay-Z rocked the internet when he revealed that his oldest daughter's name - the same name fans have come to know and love - was almost completely different.
"We just took the 'berry' off and called her Blue."
"It was supposed to be Brooklyn," Jay-Z told Gayle King in a "CBS Mornings" interview. "That was the name we had in theory." Say again? Brooklyn Carter? Though Brooklyn also starts with a B, it's a far cry from Blue,...

All dads have their embarrassing moments. Yes, even Jay-Z. In a recent interview with Gayle King on "CBS Mornings," however, the proud dad of three claimed that his oldest daughter, Blue Ivy Carter, only pretends to be embarrassed by him in public. At home, she actually thinks her dad is pretty cool. In fact, Jay-Z says the 11-year-old even asks him for fashion advice from time to time.
"Blue, she be frontin' on me a little bit."
"Blue, she be frontin' on me a little bit, but I catch her," he said. "I catch her in the corner, you know? Now she asks me if this is cool - her sneakers or whatever she's wearing." While Blue Ivy wasn't around to refute her dad's claims, she does appear to have taken some major style cues from both her parents in recent years.

On both “CBS Evening News” and “CBS Mornings” Tuesday, the news network took a moment to spotlight one of its longtime producers, the Gaza-based Marwan Al-Ghoul, as the Israel-Hamas War rages on his doorstep and fatalities for journalists in the region continue to rise.
Speaking with foreign correspondent Holly Williams while she was just 60 miles away in East Jerusalem, the journalist expressed that he is “worried” for his and his family’s safety while airstrikes continue and an impending ground invasion from the Israeli military brew.
“We are so worried about you,” Williams told Al-Ghoul.
“You are right. I am worried, too. I am concerned of my family,” he responded. “This makes me sometimes angry and sometimes I feel like I need to cry.”
Asked what an Israeli ground invasion would mean for him and his family, he responded that it’s a “difficult” question to answer.

Robin Roberts, George Stephanopoulos and Michael Strahan will soon have to greet ABC’s morning viewers from a decidedly different locale.
As part of a larger move by Walt Disney Co., all of the company’s New York properties are slated to move in 2025 to a building in downtown New York in a neighborhood known as Hudson Square. That will include some programs already ensconced in well known studios, such as “GMA” and “Live with Kelly and Mark.” The move isn’t scheduled to take place for some time, but staffers are already coming to grips with how it might affect the program’s standing in TV’s non-stop morning-news wars.
“‘Good Morning America’ is defined by the strength of our team in front of and behind the camera, quality of our reporting, and the long, trusted relationship with our viewers,” ABC News said in a statement. “Moving all ABC...

News correspondents are trained to keep their emotions in check, but sometimes a story comes along that makes such a feat all but impossible.
Anderson Cooper, Richard Engel, Holly Wiliams, Trey Yingst, Matt Gutman and Clarissa Ward have been seen on camera in recent days trying to report on a horrific event that is emotionally draining: the invasion of Israel by Hamas militants, replete with violence, hostage-taking and explosive force.
“I’ve seen many challenging things so far,” says Yingst, the Fox News correspondent who is based in Israel and has been reporting on the attack since October 7, when he held forth from his own balcony. He responded to questions via email. “We arrived in the south as Palestinian militants were still killing and kidnapping Israelis. One of the first things I saw was an Israeli soldier die in front of me at an evacuation point near the border. We...

For his eighth studio album, Autumn Variations, Ed Sheeran decided to shake things up. Rather than utilizing the power of a major label (his previous albums were released on Atlantic), he’s released his latest LP independently on his own label, Gingerbread Man Records.
The British singer-songwriter sat down for an interview with “CBS Mornings” co-host Gayle King, and explained why.
“You have to be like, ‘I don’t care what people think.’”
“Each record before I’ve done, like, all the big going in and doing all these radio interviews, and going on the late-night shows, and doing, doing all this stuff,” Sheeran said.

“And this record, there’s not even a single for it. There’s not, there’s not a music video. I’m just putting it out,” he continued.
