In the episode, Eli falls back and breaks his neck when he is told that his two sons, Hophni and Phinehas, were killed in the battle. According to the Bible, it was not the news about his sons' death nor about the defeat of the Israelites which made Eli fall and die, but being told that the Ark of the Covenant was captured by the enemy.
