Under $5 million; no first time directors (unless there’s a named producer); actually good. These used to be the tenets by which Blumhouse built its name. But oh how things have changed. It’s looking increasingly like the little studio that could is making a land grab for virtually every property in horror-dom.
The latest trailer to drop from Blumhouse is for Speak No Evil, a remake of the 2022 Danish film of the same name which caused a big buzz when it hit Shudder for being so utterly and depressingly grim. Blumhouse snapped it up and cast James McAvoy, star of Blumhouse movies Split and Glass, as the central psycho. James Waktins who made similarly nasty and misanthropic horror Eden Lake has directed and the film is set to release in September. That is a pretty speedy turnaround as these things go, but Blumhouse always was agile. McAvoy is good...

Update: At CinemaCon, Universal confirmed they’ll be releasing Five Nights at Freddy’s 2 in Fall 2025.
The original article follows:
The video game adaptation Five Nights at Freddy’s (read our review Here) quickly became Blumhouse Productions’ highest-grossing movie when it reached theatres and the Peacock streaming service back in October, surpassing the likes of Split, The Invisible Man, The Black Phone, M3GAN, the recent Halloween sequel trilogy, and the Paranormal Activity, Insidious, and The Purge franchises with its haul of $295 million. So of course they’re developing a sequel, even if one hasn’t been officially announced yet. Five Nights at Freddy’s star Josh Hutcherson already said back in January that they were “nailing down the story” and hoping to get into production as soon as possible. Now Blumhouse founder Jason Blum has shared a picture that was taken at Jim Henson’s Creature Shop, the company that provided the...

Creating a horror prequel is trickier business than a sequel. The rules are far less rigid in sequels, with expanded body count and lore most often being the primary goals. But a horror movie prequel has the tougher needle to thread in ensuring all of its pieces nestle neatly within the previously established framework without contradicting any details.
This week brings the arrival of The Omen prequel, The First Omen, charting the events leading up to Antichrist Damien Thorn’s adoption. It makes for the perfect excuse to revisit horror prequels that successfully earned their spot in their franchises through unique shifts in setting, tone, and style without veering too far off the beaten path.
This week’s streaming picks highlight horror movie prequels that get weird or dial up the horror in intense ways while further fleshing out familiar characters and storylines.
Here’s where you can stream them this week.

A Stephen King horror story about a malevolent (sort of) doll almost sounds like something that could've been written specifically for James Wan to turn into a movie. But while the filmmaker behind "Saw," "Insidious," "The Conjuring," and "Malignant" is indeed involved in adapting "The Monkey" -- a short story King wrote for Gallery magazine in 1980 before later including it in his 1985 collection "Skeleton Crew" -- for the screen, he's only lending his services as a producer.
Instead, "The Monkey" is being written and directed by Osgood "Oz" Perkins, son of "Psycho" actor Anthony Perkins and the mind behind such creepily atmospheric and inventively stylized horror pictures as "The Blackcoat's Daughter," "I Am the Pretty Thing That Lives in the House," and "Gretel & Hansel". Osgood Perkins is also currently riding high thanks to the buzz around "Longlegs," his upcoming occult serial killer horror-thriller that boasts one of the most intriguing trailers in recent memory.

Emily Blunt has had one of the most successful careers in Hollywood. From The Devil Wears Prada, to A Quiet Place, and now Oppenheimer, versatility is one of her strongest suits. She has played serious role, funny roles, complex roles, and even a flying woman. Through her talent, she has earned respect and an Oscar nomination, proving herself to be a force to be reckoned with.

The lineup includes Split (Friday, March 29), The Purge (Saturday, March 30), Ouija: Origin of Evil (Sunday, March 31), Insidious (Monday, April 1 — which is the film’s 13th anniversary) and The Invisible Man (Tuesday, April 2).
“We wanted to celebrate local communities of horror fans throughout the country with a fun, affordable and slightly evil night at the movies. We’re grateful to our partners at AMC for helping us bring this idea to life,” said Blumhouse founder and CEO Jason Blum in a statement.

Desperate times at the box office call for some desperate measures, and AMC always has some trick it has up its sleeve to lure new audiences into movie theaters. (Or simply to build revenue — remember the gold mine that wasn’t quite a gold mine? The retail-investment community on Reddit sure does.)
But AMC Entertainment has been in rare form this week, even for CEO Adam Aron.
On Friday, AMC announced a partnership with Blumhouse for a new film festival they’re calling “Halfway to Halloween.” Tickets went on sale today for a five-day run of different Blumhouse films starting on March 29. Tickets are just $8 (per film), and you can see M. Night Shyamalan’s “Split,” the original “The Purge,” “Ouija: Origin of Evil,” “Insidious,” and “The Invisible Man” all on the big screen.

The WGA strike of 2023 has created a fortunate side effect. While writers demanded better pay from studios -- as well as a guarantee that they would not be replaced by clunky automated writing machines -- many films and TV shows halted production. Without writers, the Hollywood system ground slowly to a halt. When the strike was resolved, production began again, but it left a 148-day gap in most studios' production schedules. To fill the gaps, some studios have adopted an ingenious approach: merely re-release some of their biggest hits from years past, allowing audiences to see some of their favorite movies on the big screen again.
In the case of Pixar, films like "Soul," "Luca," and "Turning Red" are being re-released to make up for losses incurred during the pandemic. Those films were all released directly onto Disney+ in the U.S. and only played in select theaters internationally, making...

In the crammed video aisle of supernatural horror films, the introduction of a villainous teddy bear in Imaginary might initially raise more eyebrows than pulse rates. Directed with a keen eye for the absurd by Jeff Wadlow (director of Nofs fave Cry_Wolf) and penned by the trio of Wadlow, Greg Erb, and Jason Oremland, this latest offering from Blumhouse Productions – the powerhouse behind a slew of commodified villains – might seem like it’s scraping the bottom of the horror trope barrel. The film stars DeWanda Wise, Tom Payne, and the delightful Betty Buckley, in a narrative that threads the familiar needle of haunted playthings and the unseen horrors they sneak under our beds.
“..Imaginary manages to swerve unexpectedly from eye-roll-worthy to surprisingly delightful. “
The premise of Imaginary tiptoes around the edge of being all too familiar: Jessica (DeWanda Wise) and her family, including the youngest stepdaughter Alice (Pyper Braun), move back to her childhood home,...

Blumhouse has churned out some critical and commercial hits, yet continues on a losing streak with a sloppily put together horror about an imaginary friend
It’s yet another sub-par day at the Blumhouse factory, production line operating at full, breakneck speed, yet machinery on the perilous verge of total collapse. The house of horror, behind hit franchises like Insidious, Paranormal Activity and The Purge, has become something of a franchise in itself, a branded string of low-budget films making a high profit, yet quality control has forever been an issue and in the last year or so, it’s barely existed.
On the first cursed weekend of January 2023, usually home to the most unintentionally horrifying horror films, M3gan upended critical expectations and scored reviews as impressive as its box office total. But normality soon resumed with a limp Insidious sequel, a junky time travel slasher, a loathed Exorcist reboot,...

20 years ago, Saw made an indelible impact on the horror genre. Not only did it usher in the so-called “torture porn” subgenre that would become synonymous with the aughts, but it also launched the career of filmmaker James Wan, who has firmly cemented his place among the masters of horror with follow-ups like The Conjuring and Insidious.
In the two decades since, the lucrative franchise has spawned nine sequels — 2005’s Saw II, 2006’s Saw III, 2007’s Saw IV, 2008’s Saw V, 2009’s Saw VI, 2010’s Saw: The Final Chapter, 2017’s Jigsaw, 2021’s Spiral: From the Book of Saw, and 2023’s Saw X — with a worldwide box office total of over $1 billion.
Despite being often maligned by detractors for its mindless sadism, fans are just as much invested in the series’ soap opera-esque melodrama as the innovative death traps. Formulaic though the general plots may be, the non-linear storyline is deceptively...

Jason Blum and James Wan have carved out a nice little partnership with some successful mid-budget horror movies. The two have collaborated with their production companies, Blumhouse and Atomic Monster, for recent projects like the latest film in the Insidious series, which also had Patrick Wilson make his directorial debut, Insidious: The Red Door and the killer doll movie, M3GAN. Recently, it was revealed that Blum’s dream project is to revive the Friday the 13th franchise. The classic slasher series hasn’t released a film since the 2009 Platinum Dunes reboot.
The rights to Friday the 13th are currently tangled up with director Sean Cunningham and writer Victor Miller disputing who has the rightful possession, but Blum is brainstorming a way to usher in the new series if he’s able to acquire the property. Collider asked Blum what movie he’d greenlight right now if he could and he answered,...

The sci-fi thriller M3GAN (read our review Here, get a copy Here) was such a financial success when it reached theatres in January of last year, it didn’t even take Universal Pictures and production companies Blumhouse and Atomic Monster two weeks to announce that they’d be re-teaming for a sequel, with M3GAN 2.0 being scheduled to reach theatres on January 17, 2025… but now the release plan has changed. Instead of trying to replicate the success the first film had in January, Universal Pictures has announced that they’re delaying M3GAN 2.0. According to The Hollywood Reporter, the film’s release has been pushed back four months, to May 16, 2025.
Based on a story crafted by produced James Wan, M3GAN was directed by Gerard Johnstone from a screenplay by Akela Cooper (Malignant). The film has the following synopsis: She’s more than just a toy. She’s part of the family.

Rebel Moon Part One: A Child of Fire (read our review Here), the first part of director Zack Snyder’s two-part sci-fi epic, has been available to watch on the Netflix streaming service for over a month, and now we’re getting ready for the April 19th release of the follow-up Rebel Moon Part Two: The Scargiver. Gemma Levinson has joined the company as vp development. She’ll take charge of day-to-day development for the company, headed by Antosca and Alex Hedlund, and also help grow Eat the Cat’s roster of TV and film projects.
“Gemma’s fantastic taste and her commitment to strange, special, provocative genre storytelling make her a perfect new partner for Eat the Cat,” Antosca said in a statement. “I’m thrilled she’s joining our small team—and I’m so excited about everything we’re already working on together.”
Eat the Cat has an overall deal Universal Studio Group’s UCP and is behind Syfy and USA’s Chucky, Hulu’s Candy and The Act — which recently got a viewing bump due to its subject, Gypsy Rose Blanchard, being back in the news — and Peacock’s A Friend of the Family.

‘Longlegs’ Teaser Trailer – New Horror Movie from Osgood Perkins Dives into the Nine Circles of Hell
Neon’s mysterious marketing campaign for Longlegs has set the stage for one of the most hotly anticipated trailer reveals of the year, and the wait is finally over this afternoon.
The upcoming serial killer horror movie marks the return of director Osgood Perkins (The Blackcoat’s Daughter, Gretel & Hansel). Nicolas Cage stars alongside Maika Monroe, with Monroe playing an FBI agent and Cage playing a serial killer.
Longlegs is said to be “in the vein of classic Hollywood psychological thrillers.”
This first look at the movie doesn’t tell us much more about it than we already know, instead conveying an unsettling atmosphere that’s loaded up with mysterious visuals. We get several shots of Maika Monroe’s character (FBI Agent Lee Harker), a glimpse of a book exploring the Nine Circles of Hell, and even a person being killed from behind with an axe. Direcred by Bryce McGuire, Night Swim was released into theaters on January 5, 2024. To date, the film has managed to scare up $36 million at the worldwide box office.

What are the highest grossing horror movies of all time? More specifically, what are the highest grossing horror franchises of all time? On the list of the Top 20, only Five franchises in the history of the genre have crossed the $1 billion mark. Can you guess which ones?
Franchises including The Purge, A Nightmare on Elm Street, Final Destination, The Exorcist, Insidious and Halloween are some of the biggest of all time, but even they haven’t yet been able to crack that massive billion dollar milestone. Other franchises including Paranormal Activity and Scream come even closer, but haven’t yet crossed over into the billions.
The only horror franchises to hit $1 billion, you ask?
With 10 films under its belt – and an eleventh on the way soon – the Saw franchise officially shattered the $1 billion milestone with the release of Saw X last year. The return of Jigsaw and Amanda drove the...

Although the horror genre has had several iconic films and franchises throughout its history, the Insidious franchise quickly made its mark after its release in the 2010s. Over the years, the Insidious franchise has enjoyed a growing following from its dedicated horror audiences. Besides the success of its popularity and audience, Insidious has had commercial success in every film in the franchise. Although not among the top 10 highest-grossing horror franchises of all time, the Insidious franchise has grossed $730 million at the Box Office. Besides its scare, a major reason Insidious has been successful has been its interconnected storylines.

David Gordon Green's "Halloween" trilogy made a lot of spooky coin for the folks at Blumhouse Productions, so it seemed like a no-brainer that the director would be the one to take the reins on a new trilogy of films based on "The Exorcist." The House that Blum Built spent a pretty penny obtaining the rights to the legendary horror film, which meant there was a lot riding on Dgg's first film, "The Exorcist: Believer," to prove this was a prime investment. The future of the trilogy — with the follow-up film already titled "The Exorcist: Deceiver" — looked grim, but now it seems...
