When Abe gets his vampire hunting axe, it's treated/laced with silver along the edge of the blade. The problem with doing this, is that the "treatment" would eventually wear off. And the more he used it, the faster it would get closer to losing said treatment. Thus, eventually becoming useless against vampires.
