- It's still early in their dating life, but Robin and Don are thinking about moving in together. They need to overcome some early dating hurdles, namely Robin confessing that she used to date both Ted and Barney and what Don's reaction will be to her still hanging out with not one but two of her ex's. But another problem may be that Barney, in facing this possible new phase in Robin's life, comes to the conclusion that he wants Robin back. And in trying to convince Barney that he only wants Robin back because he can no longer have her, Ted also comes to the conclusion that he wants Robin back. Robin now not only has to make a decision about moving in with Don, but how best to preserve that relationship in light of Barney and Ted still being in her life. Meanwhile, Marshall and Lily are forced to sleep in twin beds while away on an overnight trip, but it ends up being the best sleep both have had in quite some time. So they decide on new sleeping arrangements at home.—Huggo
- Although Robin and Don have only been dating a short while, he surprises her by suggesting she move in with him. The rest of the gang think it might be too soon (Barney calls Don a loser with a dead end job, and Robin points out that she has the same job), so she agrees to let them meet Don, which she had specifically avoided before. Ted wants Robin out as she never replaces the empty milk containers in the fridge. The gang enjoys his company, but it soon becomes clear Don doesn't know that both Ted and Barney had once dated Robin. Don eventually finds out from Barney and Lily about the past relationships (Don had thought Ted to be gay, because of his calligraphy, watches Project runway, fashion conscious, cooks Creme Brulee), and, unable to comprehend that Robin continues to hang out with two of her exes, leaves the bar.
Don apologizes to Barney & Ted the next day for over-reacting and offers to invite them over for dinner. Once he and Robin have left, Barney reveals to Ted he still wants Robin. Ted tries to convince him he doesn't, and shows him the "letter"; Ted explains that every time he broke up with someone, he would write a letter to convince himself why he shouldn't get back with the girl in the future. He writes such letters to himself when he broke up with Karen (who is a pretentious snob and cheated on him), Natalie (who pinned him down and beat him senseless in front of a cheering crowd), Stella (Left him at the altar) Ted had Barney write such a letter after breaking up with Robin (Barney wanted other boobs and do stuff like nuzzle, juggle, honker-honker), although it becomes clear after reading it he still misses her. Ted says Barney wants her only because he can't have her. Ted reads his own letter (Blue French Horn, When she said I Love You to Ted), and realizes he too misses her.
At Don's party, Barney tries to out-stage Don by eating raw jalapenos and wasabi. Ted & Barney return to Ted's apartment and end up arguing about who should get to be with her (Barney wants to have sex with her at least one more time.. Ted wants her to be the mother of his children), becoming very drunk, and eventually returning to & crashing Don's place, much to Robin's embarrassment. The next day, Ted and Barney apologize for their behavior, but Robin reveals she wants to take a break from the rest of the group and has agreed to move in with Don. She says the thing with Don is real and she wants to see where it goes. She won't do that if she continues to hang out with her exes. Barney decides to still pursue Robin. Several days go by with no word from Robin or evidence that she has moved out, but one day Ted checks her room and finds it empty; all that's been left behind is the blue French horn Ted had once stolen for her.
Meanwhile, after spending a weekend sleeping in separate beds at a hotel, Marshall and Lily realize they both enjoy their personal space (they slept for 18 hrs straight, missed 4 pre-paid meals and Marshall lost 11 pounds) and get separate beds for their own room (when they return home, Marshall finds Lily's body temperature too high.. Lily finds Marshall's toenails digging in her skin like daggers.. Marshall hates it that he can't eat a sandwich in bed); they even plan to get a third bed just for sex and a bean bag chair for special birthday stuff. Marshall believes they have just revolutionized modern marriage. After going to Don's place for dinner, however, Lily begins to fear sleeping apart could ruin their marriage; Don reveals he and his ex-wife slept in separate beds before divorcing. His ex-wife was cheating on him on the side with her personal trainer. Don offers to put in a King bed if Robin moves in. Marshall isn't keen on giving up his own bed, but after having sex, Marshall ends up climbing into Lily's bed with her.
