The last Gunslinger, Roland Deschain, has been locked in an eternal battle with Walter O'Dim, also known as the Man in Black, determined to prevent him from toppling the Dark Tower, which holds the universe together. With the fate of the worlds at stake, good and evil will collide in the ultimate battle as only Roland can defend the Tower from the Man in Black.
During one of Jake's visions at the beginning of the film, he hears the phrase "The man in black fled across the desert, and the gunslinger followed." This is, word for word, the opening line of the first book in the Dark Tower series.
Man in Black:
You really think you can stop me, gunslinger?
On the beginning of the final fight with the man in dark the gunslinger walks in with only half of the bullets on his belt filled. Once he looks at the boy and draws his guns the belt is full of bullets.
Right at the very end of the credits, you hear the ominous whistle.
