The series and its source material suggests that area of the United States left to minorities and other "undesirables" is a vast wasteland. In fact, the area shown on the maps in the series contains much of the most fertile land in the US, with Eastern Colorado and portions of Montana having excellent farmland.
During the opening credits, we can hear the sound of a reel projector whirring up to play speed. Film reels are central to the plot of the series.
