Featured review
In a short feature composed of two stories, John Guillermin directs an edited version of Herman Melville's "Bartleby the Scrivener," and Don Chaffey a version of E. W. Hornung's "Strange Journey". All of the writing is attributed to Jerome Lawrence and Robert E. Lee -- whose names, presumably, were held in greater esteem at the time. Valentine Dyall and John Slater offer endpieces in which they propose to narrate the two stories to each other, and the tales are considerably adapted; Bartleby is moved to London, and Strange Journey is a modern dress affair.
The performers are good, with John Laurie playing an unsettling Bartleby, and Peter Bull an offputting if seemingly jovial Captain Breen. These short anthologies seemed popular in British cinemas while they never seemed to catch on in America.
