First of all, I'm very happy that my favorite film of the year, Tom McCarthy's "Spotlight," wins big at the 88th Academy Awards! I was losing hope after "The Big Short" won the Producers Guild Award and "The Revenant" zoomed onto the frontrunner status!
But no. At the night of the Oscars, "Spotlight" won two major awards including Best Picture and Best Original Screenplay!
Kudos to McCarthy and team!
My heart felt "Spotlight" would win but my mind said "The Revenant." See? The heart always wins!
Now, onto the show itself. I thought Chris Rock did a good job in softening the #OscarsSoWhite controversy! But the show itself? A bit of a bore. It felt long! Not quite the 4 hours and 23 minutes of the 74th Oscars but long nonetheless.
And really? Only Sam Smith, The Weeknd, and Lady Gaga were invited to perform the Best Original Song nominees? What...

Well, Charlotte Rampling just went and put her foot in it. That's a kind way of saying that the 69-year-old British actress, a surprise Best Actress Oscar nominee for a small movie called 45 Years, should not have told a French interviewer that the controversy over the award's lack of diversity is, in her opinion, "racist to whites." She should not have added that "maybe black actors did not deserve to make the final stretch." If Rampling was already considered a remote possibility to win against the likes of Room's Brie Larson, she just pushed off from shore in a...

Here are the nominations for the 88th Academy Awards; and The Revenant leads the way with 12 nods, including Picture, Director (Alejandro G. Iñárritu), Actor (Leonardo DiCaprio) and Supporting Actor (Tom Hardy). Mad Max: Fury Road follows with ten however, with the action epic getting the well deserved Picture and Director nominations.
Surprisingly Aaron Sorkin (Steve Jobs) and Quentin Tarantino (The Hateful Eight) didn’t get a screenplay nod and Steven Spielberg and Ridley Scott missed out in the Director category.
The 2016 Oscars will air live on Sunday, February 28th on ABC, hosted by Chris Rock.

Nominations for the 88th Academy Awards were announced on Thursday morning, and The Revenant dominated the field, earning nods in 12 different categories, including Best Picture. In recent weeks, Alejandro González Iñárritu's epic saga of frontier revenge has seemed like one of the only sure things in an otherwise unusually unpredictable field, but the sheer number of nominations it received was one of the biggest surprises of a morning that was filled with them.

We finally know who and what has been nominated this year by Oscar. Ladies and gentlemen, just a few moments ago this morning the 88th Academy Award nominations were handed out, with The Revenant leading the way. 12 nominations went to that film, with Mad Max: Fury Road next in line with ten citations. Things like Spotlight managed to do as well or better than expected, while the only huge shockers to me were Ridley Scott missing in Best Director (essentially replaced by Lenny Abrahamson for Room) and Tom Hardy getting in for The Revenant. Straight Outta Compton missing in Best Picture was also surprising, but less so. I’ll have more to say in tomorrow’s piece on exactly what went down, along with updated predictions, but at the moment, let’s get straight to the actual nominations… Analysis is coming tomorrow. For now, here are the nominees for the...

Mad Max: Fury Road and The Revenant are among the nominees for this year's Oscars. Here's the full list of hopefuls...
We've ironed our dressing gowns, polished our slippers and hosed down the kitchen in preparation for a particularly posh time in the movie year: yes, it's Oscar season.
Guillermo del Toro and Ang Lee were the director pairing for this year's Oscar nominations, which saw The Revenant and Mad Max: Fury Road leading the pack.
It's great to see Anomalisa, Sean The Sheep and When Marnie Was There among the nominees for best animated feature, and it's equally heartening to see the superb indie film Ex Machina up against expensive movies like Star Wars: The Force Awakens and Mad Max: Fury Road in the best visual effects category.

It’s difficult to even care much about this announcement when mourning the loss of a film icon, but alas, the 2016 Oscar nominations have been unveiled this morning. Ahead of a ceremony on February 28th, Academy President Cheryl Boone Isaacs, Guillermo del Toro, John Krasinski, and Ang Lee were on hand to announce the 88th Oscars nominations.
Leading the pack is The Revenant, which picked up 12 nominations, while Mad Max: Fury Road was close behind with 10. The Martian had 7, while Carol, Bridge of Spies and Spotlight each picked up 6, but sadly, Todd Haynes‘ magnificent drama was left out of the Best Picture and Best Director race. See the full list below.

After many months of speculation, the full list of this year's Oscar nominees have been announced - just minutes after the reveal of the death of beloved thespian Alan Rickman.
"The Revenant" led the field with twelve nominations followed by "Mad Max: Fury Road" with ten and "The Martian" with seven. Next were "Spotlight" and "Carol" with six nominations; "Star Wars: The Force Awakens," "The Big Short" and "Bridge Of Spies" got five; "Room" and "The Danish Girl" nabbed four; "Sicario," "Brooklyn" and "The Hateful Eight" scored three; and "Steve Jobs" and "Ex Machina" nabbed two.
Surprises? "Creed" and "Joy" scored only one nomination each for Stallone's and Lawrence's performances respectively. No Ridley Scott for director, Quentin Tarantino or Aaron Sorkin for screenplay, Charlize Theron for best actress, "Carol" for best picture, "See You Again" for best song, and of course - the distinct lack of racial diversity. Here's the list in full.

“There is one night, we all dream in Gold.”
The Academy has unveiled the new posters and TV spots for the 88th Oscars (Feb. 28, 2016).
The 2016 Oscar campaign illustrates the emotional power of movies and their ability to inspire all of us to achieve our dreams. Movies remind us that imagination is limitless. The Oscar is, at once, a representation of excellence in film and a tangible symbol that dreams can–and do–come true.
“The Dream campaign embodies what people love about the Oscars—the range of emotions and excitement that comes with those unforgettable moments in a live show,” said Christina Kounelias, Academy Cmo. “Fans also look for the comedy and the unexpected, and that’s what they’ll get with our host, Chris Rock. His comedic perspective will be a great complement to the more dramatic moments.”

Now we're talking! Forget the Golden Globe Awards and its category randomness. ("The Martian" is a musical or comedy? Ok then.) The 21st annual Critics' Choice Awards nominations were just revealed -- including both TV and film categories -- and they added a lot of new players to the game. Some welcome players, too. (Nice to see you, "The Leftovers" and "UnREAL.") And maybe some not-so welcome players. (Tom Hardy gets an action star nod for "Mad Max: Fury Road"? He was barely in it.)
The winners will be named January 17 and the ceremony will air live on A&E, hosted by T.J. Miller.

Rooney Mara in 'Carol': Online Film Critics Awards' Best Supporting Actress nominee. With Cate Blanchett. Rooney Mara listed as supporting actress in Online Film Critics Society Award nominations The nominations for the 2015 Online Film Critics Society Awards have been announced. Although as much a lead in Todd Haynes' Carol as costar Cate Blanchett, Rooney Mara has been shortlisted in the Best Supporting Actress category. The Weinstein Company's campaign, widely criticized for promoting awards season (particularly Oscar) category fraud, seems to be working. Yesterday, Mara was voted Best Supporting Actress at the New York Film Critics Online Awards. Not working so well is Focus Features' campaign for Tom Hooper's gender-bending biopic The Danish Girl. Long before the film's opening, pundits were asserting that this year's Best Actor Academy Award winner Eddie Redmayne (The Theory of Everything) would be a shoo-in 2016 Best Actor Oscar nominee for playing Danish artist Einar Wegener,...

So this awards season, it's shaping up to be a battle between "Spotlight" and "Mad Max: Fury Road." Tom McCarthy's nail-biting film about the Catholic Church sex abuse scandal as seen through the eyes of the Boston Globe reporters has been duking it out with George Miller's reboot of the "Mad Max" franchise in various critics awards like the Boston Society of Film Critics which chose "Spotlight" for Best Picture with "Fury Road" as runner-up.

Today was a busy day for awards season, with the New York Film Critics Online, the Los Angeles Film Critics Association, and the Boston Society of Film Critics all weighing in on their favorite films of 2015. What’s particularly interesting here is that, just like last year, all three groups have agreed on their top pick, naming Tom McCarthy’s journalist drama Spotlight as the best film of 2015. The movie also took home Best Screenplay from all three groups, while also claiming Best Ensemble from Boston and New York, and Best Director from New York.
Looking over the rest of the awards, the only thing that might be considered surprising is Paul Dano racking up two more victories for Love & Mercy, both for Best Actor, despite being labeled a supporting actor by the studio. Star of a new series of the ITV hit Broadchurch, Charlotte Rampling talks about playing the outsider, how she nailed The Look – and why her sister’s suicide changed everything
Not long ago, at home in Paris, Charlotte Rampling switched on the old movie channel she watches all the time, the way some people leave the radio on. She saw that one of her films was playing. Max Mon Amour (1986) is the story of a diplomat’s wife, Margaret, who has an affair with a chimpanzee, Max. There’s a scene in which the pair are discovered in bed together, Max concealed beneath the white covers as the husband rages through the bedroom door; another when Max joins a formal dinner party, only to be dismissed in disgrace after covering Margaret with apey kisses. Rampling plays Margaret without a trace of self-consciousness, even as Max hooks his hairy arms around...

Cosmetics brand Nars is just the latest big fashion name to fall under the spell of Rampling's cool, elegant beauty
From Catherine Deneuve's elegant Louis Vuitton campaign to Jacky O'Shaughnessy's rather more revealing shots for American Apparel, there's no denying that the fashion industry is wising up to the power of older models. Today, cosmetics company Nars followed suit, hiring Charlotte Rampling, 68, as its latest face.
The actor will appear in pictures to coincide with the brand's 20th anniversary in September. Though Nars has a history of hiring models in their 40s, including Stella Tennant and the grey-haired supermodel Kristen McMenamy, Rampling is the oldest so far. She is also a style icon long adored by the fashion industry, having been shot by some of its edgiest photographers. In 1973, Rampling posed naked and smoking for Helmut Newton. In 2004, Juergen Teller shot her in crumpled bedsheets for a series of campaign shots for Marc Jacobs.

This will be the year that revenue from streaming passes revenue from DVD sales, according to a recent article in the Hollywood Reporter.
How do we feel about this? I ask as a movie-watcher who subscribes to Netflix, Hulu and Fandor, and also rents online from Amazon and Vudu. iTunes gets none of my business because the iTunes Store has been misbehaving on my computer. I average three streaming movies a week and three or four on DVD. I'm not an average consumer, because a lot of my viewing is for work. But often of an evening I'll stream for pleasure. All of my streaming happens through a Roku Player on HDTV.
Does anyone recall the time when HBO was first test-marketing Movies on Demand? There was much hilarity when it was learned that their Florida test market wasn't exactly a model of digital automation. Apparently actual employees were taking...

With three selected films in the Main Comp (Yousry Nasrallah’s After the Battle, Abbas Kiarostami’s Like Someone in Love, Walter Salles’ On the Road) and one in the Un Certain Regard section (Xavier Dolan’s Laurence Anyways) you could say that French sales/production/distribution company MK2 are spoiled this year. Where buyers might want to focus their attention is the film that wasn’t yet ready and is posed for a Venice showing in Olivier Assayas’ Something in the Air (see pic above).
After The Battle by Yousry Nasrallah
Like Someone In Love by Abbas Kiarostami
On The Road by Walter Salles
A Monkey On My Shoulder by Marion Laine
Fire By Louboutin (Feu By Louboutin) by Bruno Hullin
Kinshasa Kids (Le Diable N’Existe Pas) by Marc Henri Wajnberg
Laurence Anyways by Xavier Dolan
Leadersheep (Tous Au Larzac!) by Christian Rouaud
