After young Riley is uprooted from her Midwest life and moved to San Francisco, her emotions - Joy, Fear, Anger, Disgust and Sadness - conflict on how best to navigate a new city, house, and school.
The writers considered up to 27 different emotions, but settled on five (Joy, Sadness, Disgust, Fear and Anger) to make it less complicated. Some of the major emotions that ended up being cut included Surprise, Pride, and Trust.
Do you ever look at someone and wonder, "What is going on inside their head?" Well, I know. Well, um, I know Riley' head.
While Joy and Sadness are away trying to make their way back to headquarters, the other emotions take over and decide that the only way Riley can be happy again is by going back to Minnessota. They should know that for Riley to be happy, they need Joy back in the headquarters and make this their primary goal instead.
The movie's title appears during the scene where the Andersens are driving to San Fransisco, just as they are exiting the tunnel; giving a subtle reference to "Inside Out".
