After young Riley is uprooted from her Midwest life and moved to San Francisco, her emotions - Joy, Fear, Anger, Disgust and Sadness - conflict on how best to navigate a new city, house, and school.
Riley's classroom is No. A113., sharing the same number as the room at the California Institute of Arts where many animators, including John Lasseter and Brad Bird, graduated from. A113 is a common Easter egg in Pixar's films.
Do you ever look at someone and wonder, "What is going on inside their head?" Well, I know. Well, um, I know Riley' head.
Joy draws a chalk circle and has Sadness stand in it. Joy then turns around and walks towards the control panel. The scene changes to a long distance shot, you see Joy walking towards the control panel, but Sadness has disappeared, as did the chalk circle.
During the credits, the "inside" emotional workings/characters of several minor characters from the film are shown, including Riley's teacher, a bus driver, a dog and a cat.
