Ghost hunters will find more than they bargained for on Halloween in upcoming genre-bender The Unearthly. Per Deadline, the indie sci-fi horror comedy has found its lead in star and producer Patrick Warburton.
Josh Sternfeld (Fortress: Sniper’s Eye) is set to direct The Unearthly for Centerboro Productions, with production scheduled to begin early this year in Connecticut.
In The Unearthly, “a team of paranormal investigators live-stream a ‘Halloween Special’ ghost hunt of a notorious haunted mansion, finding the source of the evil at hand to be far more deadly than they ever could have imagined. Warburton plays Tank McCrary, an old school paranormal investigator in the style of Ed Warren and Peter James, who hosted over 20 live television specials in the ’90s before an incident ruined his career. Stubborn and egotistical, he likes to do things his way. He doesn’t trust technology, relying on his analog tape recorder,...

Crazy Legs Features has nabbed film rights to The Most Beautiful: My Life with Prince, the bestseller from Mayte Garcia, chronicling her romance with the iconic musical artist, for development as a scripted biopic. With the WGA strike in the rearview mirror, the company is now in search of a writer to pen the adaptation.
The first wife of the superstar born Prince Rogers Nelson, Mayte’s bestseller offers a perspective on Prince through their intensely personal relationship that shows a depth and nuance never revealed of the famously private and beloved artist. The book’s title is inspired by the hit song Prince wrote about their legendary love story that started backstage at a concert. What began as a friendship between two artists blossomed into a romance, thrived as a fairytale from their wedding day, and then struggled due to the devastating losses that ultimately ended their marriage in 2000. Still,...

HBO and HBO Max will be home to new original films, highly anticipated streaming debuts of new releases, and the finales of three popular series throughout February. Below, we’ve assembled a complete list of everything new on HBO and HBO Max in February 2022, and it includes a new thriller from director Steven Soderbergh and starring Zoe Kravitz called “Kimi.” The original feature takes place in a Covid-19 pandemic Seattle and follows an agoraphobic tech worker who discovers violent crimes have occurred in a data stream. The Max Original film premieres on Feb. 10.
Also coming in February is the “Raised by Wolves” Season 2 premiere on Feb. 3, with new episodes released weekly, as well as the season premiere of “Last Week Tonight with John Oliver” on Feb. 20. And coming to a close in February are the original series “Euphoria,” “And Just Like That…” and “Peacemaker,” which all air finales this month.

For its list of new releases of February 2022, HBO Max is bringing back one of its biggest original series.
The Ridley Scott-directed sci-fi epic Raised by Wolves helped launch HBO Max back in 2020 and now it’s finally back for another season. Raised by Wolves season 2 premieres with three episodes on Feb. 3. This season will continue the conflict between future atheists and theists on a remote planet, while two androids raise some kids.
February 2022 also sees the end of another, more recent HBO Max hit. Peacemaker airs its finale on Feb. 17. Thankfully that same day sees the premiere of another exciting original. Dream Raider is a Mandarin-language sci-fi thriller that carries some big Inception vibes.
There aren’t many original movies of note this month, but there are a lot of recent hits coming to HBO Max as library titles. Nightmare Alley arrives on Feb. 1, followed by The Many Saints of Newark on Feb.

The very existence of a movie called “Butt Boy” outside the porn realm is almost as ridiculous as its premise, which means it’s especially unusual to find that director Tyler Cornack plays it straight. In short, “Butt Boy” finds an obsessive police investigator on the trail of a deranged serial killer type who sticks children and objects up his ass and keeps them there.
With those expectations upfront, it’s a strange wonder to find that this slick and entertaining B-movie actually musters a downright subtle, even eerie tone for much of its 100 minutes. At a certain point, that ambitious gamble becomes untenable, as the ludicrous nature of the material overshadows its self-serious air, but not before Cornack delivers

As Hollywood got caught up in the maelstrom surrounding Harvey Weinstein on Thursday, another major media story also broke courtesy of Buzzfeed, revealing how Breitbart News and Milo Yiannopoulos influenced the mainstream media with Nazi and white nationalist ideas over the past few years.
The detailed story was partly based on a number of emails sent and received by Yiannopoulos. Those exchanges included a number of reporters, who would email Yiannopoulos encouraging him to attack certain women, offer up tips, or simply ask crude questions. Among those emailing Yiannopoulos was journalist Dan Lyons, who in 2015 seemed awfully interested in the gender of various GamerGate targets who were in Yiannopoulos’s bullseye.
These emails, per Buzzfeed’s quotes and screenshots, include Lyons asking Yiannopoulos if game designer Zoë Quinn is “a biological female or trans?”, to which Yiannopoulos replied “She is a girl… A hideous girl but a girl.”

"We need to start something new." We haven't seen Basinger that much recently. The film is about a woman (Basinger) who really wants to have a baby, but can't do so, and sets off on a quest to do something about it only ending up in what seems to be a very messed up situation. Exclusive: Indie distributor XLrator Media is diving into content creation with John Suits and Gabriel Cowan’s film production shingle New Artists Alliance. The companies have inked a three-picture production and distribution deal to co-produce low-budget science fiction action thrillers, starting with the Brandon Routh-Caity Lotz astronaut pic 400 Days, now in post-production.
After seeing a self-described successful digital and VOD return on the $1.5 million-budgeted April sci-fier The Machine, XLrator’s CEO Barry Gordon was seeking similarly budgeted high-concept acquisition titles but found niche offerings to be sparse. He linked up with Naa, the producers behind recent genre pics Bad Milo and SXSW winner Cheap Thrills. The deal gives XLrator a stake in the pipeline driving content tailored to the kind of multiplatform release that made British android pic The Machine an iTunes high performer.

A more serious take on slime punk films like Toxic Avenger and Slime City, Jesse Thomas Cook's Septic Man (review) has more in common with Cronenberg’s tragic transformation tale The Fly.
Thanks mostly to the twisted mind of screenwriter Tony Burgess (Pontypool), Septic Man has a lot more going on under the surface than just a basic story about a man trapped underground inside a tank of absolute filth who begins to transform into something monstrous.
Director Cook spoke with us about the film and how it was one of the hardest, grossest experiences of his professional life thus far - but that doesn’t mean he didn’t have a hell of a time doing it.
DC: How was your experience at Fantasia with your latest sci-fi film Ejecta? Is there a favorite project you and [Tony] Burgess have worked on so far?

On the heels of the 39th edition of the Toronto Int. Film Festival (Sept 4-14), Ifp’s Independent Film Week is where a plethora of fiction, non-fiction and new this year, web-based series from the likes of Desiree Akhavan and Calvin Reeder find future coin. Sectioned off as projects at the very beginning of financing to those that are nearing completion, there happens to be tons of Sundance alumni in the names below. Among those that caught our attention we have Medicine for Melancholy‘s Barry Jenkins’ sophomore feature, produced by Bad Milo!‘s Adele Romanski, Moonlight is about “two Miami boys navigate the temptations of the drug trade and their burgeoning sexuality in this triptych drama about black queer youth”. Concussion‘s Stacie Passon digs into the thriller genre with Strange Things Started Happening. Produced by vet Mary Jane Skalski (Mysterious Skin), this is about “a woman who has...

The Skeleton Twins has debuted its first trailer.
Saturday Night Live alumni Kristen Wiig and Bill Hader reunite in Craig Johnson's drama/comedy.
Hader plays Milo, a struggling actor who returns to his hometown for a reunion with his estranged twin Maggie (Wiig), ten years after the pair both experience a brush with death on the same day.
The reunion forces them to confront the places where their lives have gone wrong, and perhaps get them back on track.
Luke Wilson, Ty Burrell and Mark Duplass also feature in the The Skeleton Twins.
The film premiered earlier this year at the Sundance Film Festival.
The Skeleton Twins will open in the Us on September 19. A UK release is yet to be announced.

Kristen Wiig’s post-Bridesmaids movie career has been a little bumpy: She didn’t have much to do, for instance, in The Secret Life of Walter Mitty or Anchorman 2. But the first trailer for The Skeleton Twins hints that her next film may finally find her in a starring role again.
Wiig appears in the movie alongside Bill Hader. From Sundance, Jeff Labrecque described The Skeleton Twins as “a full-on drama” where Wiig and Hader “play Maggie and Milo, twins who used to be close but now live on different sides of the country. Neither is particular happy with their lives,...

Hollywood's marketing creatives and executives got together for the 15th Annual Golden Trailer Awards at the Saban Theatre in Beverly Hills on Friday May 30th to celebrate the best trailers and marketing campaigns of the past year. It was a boozy, self-congratulatory affair - complete with party busses full of the nominees' rowdy family and friends, armed with plastic cups of wine and flasks. "Most of the people here are going to leave as a loser - that's why there's booze," master of ceremonies Jay Mohr half-joked. Although the trailers for studio films took home a majority of the awards presented during the show, "Blackfish," "Dallas Buyers Club" and "Bad Milo!" took home trophies for Best Documentary Trailer, Best Independent Trailer and Trashiest Trailer, respectively. Check out the winning trailers below. For the complete list of winners in the non-show categories, visit the Golden Trailer Awards website. Best Action The Hunger Games: Catching Fire “World.

This bizarre little creature feature was released in 2013 in the States and was directed by Jacob Vaughan (The Cassidy Kids). Do awards shows for advertising have “for your consideration” ads for their ads?

Today’s film is the 2013 short Crush. The film is written by Rachel Antonoff, who also co-directs the short with Bianca Giaever, and stars Jack Antonoff, Mae Whitman, Jenny Slate, and Gillian Jacobs. Jacobs rose to prominence in the role of Britta Perry in the NBC series Community, and has also been seen in movies such as Helena from the Wedding, Seeking a Friend for the End of the World, The Incredible Burt Wonderstone, and Bad Milo. One of my personal favorites from last year was Bad Milo!, co-written and directed by Jacob Vaughan. The film's titular butt demon was one of the most adorable little monsters in the genre's recent past, and it looks like Vaughan is once again headed into pint-sized creature territory...
Which is quite frankly music to my ears. Read on!
According to Bloody Disgusting Vaughan has just been attached to direct The Anklebiter, which was formerly titled Zombie Baby. Penned by Andy Jones, the film is set after the zombie apocalypse and centers on a young couple who take in an undead baby, finding themselves unable to kill it. Ah, the joys of parenthood.
The script was written several years back, and it was in fact included on the 2010 Black List, the annual roundup of the hottest unproduced screenplays in Hollywood.
Can't think of anyone more suited to tackle such a whacky tale than Jacob Vaughan,...

Bad Milo star Ken Marino is no longer shit out of luck as he's just scored a role in the big screen adaptation of R.L. Stine's much beloved Goosebumps franchise. Read on for the latest details and more!
According to Deadline, Marino will play Coach Carr, the blowhard coach at Greendale High who wades into battle when monsters overrun the school. Jack Black, Amy Ryan, and Dylan Minnette are also starring for Black’s Gulliver’s Travels helmer Rob Letterman, who landed the directing gig last March.
The flick follows Dylan Minnette’s character, who moves from New York City to the small town of Greendale, Maryland, where his secretive new neighbor turns out to be veteran young adult horror author R.L. Stine (Jack Black).

Most audiences are likely familiar with Ken Marino’s face, but it’s his name that isn’t quite as recognizable. At least, not yet. Despite giving excellent performances on TV in shows like Party Down and Children’s Hospital, and on the big screen in films like the recent, and criminally under-seen Bad Milo, the actor still hasn’t achieved the level of fame that he deserves.
That may all change very shortly though as Deadline is reporting that Sony has cast Marino in their upcoming Ya adaptation of R.L. Stine’s Goosebumps, which already boasts a cast that includes Jack Black, Amy Ryan and Dylan Minnette. As horror fans, if there's one thing we know all too well, it is that the genre titles we've come to love are often at high risk for going out of print (Oop) at a moment’s notice. With many of our favorite films being released by smaller distributors, a second or third printing of these titles is not always likely. With that in mind, it’s always wise to pick them up upon release. However, with the growing popularity of Video on Demand, if you do miss the DVD release/re-release of a noteworthy title, you may not be forced to pay an outrageous amount of cash to add it to your collection. More and more titles are being made available via the digital platform – even titles that are currently out of print on DVD. As a collector, I always prefer the DVD or Blu-ray version of a film...

Here lately, Magnet Releasing carries the same clout with me as Cannon Films, New World Pictures, and Vestron Video. That’s not a slam. It’s a compliment of the highest order. Whenever I saw those monikers before any film, I knew I was in for some kind of genre masterpiece. Whether it be action, horror, or science fiction, it would be a movie that I and a several others (you know who you are) would harbor a clandestine love for until the internet and horror cons came along. That’s when we could go public and find kindred spirits that were states and countries away.

Cinema is often paradoxical: it's full of situations where opposites attract, or things are so wrong they're right, and we often see good characters go bad. As patrons of the cinema, we are frequently attracted to these paradoxes, and this is especially the case with movie characters so hideously deformed or badly misshapen that they circle back around to being adorable. We don’t know quite what to do with these anomalies... do we hug them, or run away screaming? With that in mind, let's count down seven of our favorite creatures in cinema (and one runner-up) that are so ugly they're cute. When you wrap up with this one, be sure to check out horror loving kids and the parents who encourage it. Bad Milo Sometimes one’s inner turmoil manifests itself as a living thing. And sometimes that living thing has murderous intent and lives in its host...
