Academy Award nominee Bill Nighy and rising teen actor Roman Griffin Davis are set to co-star in road movie 500 Miles from BAFTA Award-winning director Morgan Matthews.
Beta Cinema has acquired international sales rights to the drama – produced by Origin Pictures, Port Pictures and Minnow Films – and will launch sales at the EFM.
Nighy will co-star as the grandfather of a young runaway played by Davis, who made history in 2019 as the youngest ever Golden Globe nominee for his performance in Taika Waititi’s World War II satire Jojo Rabbit. Recent credits for Nighy include Living, for which he was Oscar nominated in the lead actor category last year.
Road movie 500 Miles follows a broken family forced to come together when sixteen-year-old Finn (Davis) and his live-wire younger brother Charlie run away from trouble at home in England to reach their estranged grandfather (Nighy) on Ireland’s stunning and wild west coast.

The Screen Actors Guild announced their annual nominations this morning and there are some minor plot twists. They rejected May December in totality (Todd Haynes movies do continue to struggle with non-critic based movie awards bodies), embraced Nyad just like the Globes did, and threw new question marks around both Best Supporting Actor and Best Supporting Actress. No major plot twists this year, though, like an I Smile Back, Woman in Gold, or St. Vincent.
The SAG Awards will stream live on Netflix this year – a first! – as we’ve long suspected awards shows will move to streaming like everything else has. Comments and a full list of nominees after the jump…...

How much does personal history humanize world history? Genealogist Randy Schoenberg sets out to answer that existential question in Matthew Mishory’s documentary “Fioretta,” which captures his quest to share his centuries-long family history as a prime example of the persecution and murders of Jews in Austria during a horrific time in history.
Randy leads the Schoenberg family affair, which brings together various generations on a trek to Vienna to revisit the graves of and memorials to his ancestors. Randy himself was previously portrayed by Ryan Reynolds in the narrative feature “Woman in Gold” after he sued the Austrian government in 2005 on behalf of Holocaust survivor Maria Altmann (played by Helen Mirren) to return five Gustav Klimt paintings that were stolen from her family by the Nazis.
Now, Randy wants to reclaim the city of Vienna itself for his own family, as well as seek out the gravestone of his oldest known ancestor,...

Helen Mirren Claps Back At Backlash Over ‘Golda’ Casting, Insists She Told Director ‘I’m Not Jewish’
Backlash over Helen Mirren’s casting in “Golda”, a new biopic about late Israeli Prime Minister Golda Meir, has flared up, and Mirren is responding.
Speaking with Britain’s Radio Times, the Oscar winner said that she understands criticisms that she — a non-Jewish actor — is playing an iconic Jewish woman.
“I did tell Guy that I’m not Jewish, in case he thought I was.”
While controversy over her casting emerged last year, Mirren told the magazine that “the whole issue of casting has exploded out of the water fairly recently.”

Exclusive: Negeen Yazdi, Senior Vice President, Film Development & Production at Fifth Season, is departing the company. The well-liked veteran exec has been with Fifth Season (formerly known as Endeavor Content) for the past six years, helping to build its film slate and managing the film development team alongside Dan Guando. Deadline understands that her departure is amicable and that she will remain attached to select projects in an executive producer capacity. It is also understood this is unrelated to the recent staff cuts at Fifth Season, which were spurred on as a result of the impact of the WGA and SAG-AFTRA strikes.
Yazdi, who is known for her taste and filmmaker relationships, championed such Fifth Season pictures as John Carney’s Flora and Son, and the Academy Award-nominated The Lost Daughter from Maggie Gyllenhaal. Across her tenure, she helped helped build a robust pipeline of projects which led...

It's hard to believe Helen Mirren hasn't been nominated for an Oscar since The Last Station, way back in 2009. The shock comes not from her fate's unfairness, mind you. Instead, it stems from how Mirren seems to be actively chasing gold, nabbing essential precursor support for projects like Hitchcock, The Hundred-Foot Journey, Woman in Gold, Trumbo, and The Leisure Seeker. This year, the actress may be going down the same road with Golda, the recently released biopic about Golda Meier, "the Iron Lady of Israel.". To mark the occasion, let's look away from the failed Oscar buzz and consider the peak of Helen Mirren's work as a big-screen legend.
As with Angela Bassett, Gwyneth Paltrow, Sigourney Weaver, Marilyn Monroe, and Maggie Smith, TV performances will be set aside for another day, and so will her Academy-anointed turns. Caveats out of the way, this is my Mirren top ten…...

Mirren’s casting as Israeli prime minister Golda Meir ignited debate over non-Jewish people playing Jewish roles.
Golda director Guy Nattiv has addressed the debate around the casting of non-Jews in Jewish roles, saying ahead of the film’s Berlinale world premiere that UK actor Mirren has “got the Jewish chops to portray Golda”.
Mirren, who is not Jewish, plays Israel’s only female prime minister, Golda Meir, as she leads her country through the Yom Kippur War of 1973, a conflict between Israel and a coalition of Arab states led by Egypt and Syria.

Helen Mirren knows her way around the Berlin International Film Festival, which this year hosts the out-of-competition world premiere of her latest film, Golda, in which she stars as Israeli Prime Minister Golda Meir.
The future Oscar winner visited the festival way back in 1985 when it screened the sci-fi pic 2010: The Year We Made Contact, director Peter Hyams’ sequel to Stanley Kubrick’s 2001: A Space Odyssey. In her first big Hollywood production, the British actress, then 38, drew on her heritage — her father had been born in Russia — to play the Russian cosmonaut Tanya Kirbuk, who commands a ship on its way to Jupiter.
She would later admit: “The script was somewhat incomprehensible to me and the role was not the best. The story was, however, prescient in that it foretold the joint America-Russian missions into space that happened after the collapse of Communism.” Nevertheless, she gamely joined in...

One of the weirdest scenes in Amazon Prime's The Boys occurs during season 2, but it was almost even weirder. The Boys is a notoriously gross TV show not for the faint of heart, with gore, horror, and bodily fluids constantly covering the series. One scene in The Boys season 2 arguably tops every other due to its sheer level of weirdness, but The Deep actor Chace Crawford has revealed this bizarre scene could have been even stranger than it was in the final cut.
The Boys is incredibly R-rated, featuring exploding heads, dildo fights, and a superhero orgy called Herogasm. Despite this, The Boys is also a biting satire, using its supes to parody celebrities and politicians, while also lampooning iconic heroes like Batman and Superman. Riffing heavily on DC's Aquaman, The Deep has a deep-seated insecurity over the set of gills on his torso. The rare few to have glimpsed...

Just a few months ago, Netflix appeared to be on a very rough track. Then Stranger Things season 4 came around and led to a less-apocalyptic-than-expected Q2 earnings report for the streamer. With its new releases for August 2022, however, Netflix is going to have to find another hit to keep the good vibes rolling. Here are some of their best options.

Ooo, so what’s this “new era” coming for the denizens of Downton Abbey, 1920s-Yorkshire’s nicest feudal hangover? I never truly thought it would be the guillotines my reading of the prequel had inspired in my imagination, though a girl’s gotta dream. But it would not be anachronistic to hope for the Great Depression hitting the Earl of Grantham’s interests hard. Or perhaps soak-the-rich taxation has finally come for Downton, forcing them to open the house to *gasp* paying visitors?
Alas, that last is the closest to comeuppance that will descend upon the sprawling Crawley family and their impossibly happy-with-their-station servants. In the mildest sort of meta one could hope for from this franchise, the moving pictures have come to Downton Abbey! Film director Jack Barber and stars Guy Dexter and Myrna Dalgleish are making a glamorous romantic drama and they need a grand house for the shoot.

Director Matthew Mishory and producer and financier Bradford L. Schlei announced the start of production for Rubber Ring Films’ and Schlei’s Stone Canyon Entertainment’s “Finding Fioretta,” which will start early next year.
The feature documentary chronicles the life of genealogist Randol Schoenberg who is on a quest to find the centuries-old gravestone of his oldest known ancestor — a woman who died in the 1600s in the Jewish ghetto of Venice, Italy. In 2005, Schoenberg successfully sued the Austrian government on behalf of Holocaust survivor Maria Altmann, recovering the five Gustav Klimt paintings stolen from her family by the Nazis. That case inspired the movie “Woman in Gold” starring Ryan Reynolds and Helen Mirren.
Mishory spoke about the project, saying, “America’s obsession with genealogy is really an obsession with storytelling.” He added, “Randy has made it his life’s work to tell a 500-year story about his family, and...

Helen Mirren, who won an Oscar for “The Queen,” will portray Israel’s legendary Prime Minister Golda Meir in “Golda.” The film will be directed by Academy Award winner Guy Nattiv, and produced by BAFTA winner Michael Kuhn.

Just like Beyonce and Jay-Z, four is the magic number for the Screen Actors Guild Awards this year. Nominations will be announced on Feb. 4 and the ceremony will be held on April 4 (which is also Bey and Jay’s wedding anniversary). And if our odds turn out to be correct, Chadwick Boseman will go into the record books as the first person to earn four nominations for film in a single year.
Boseman is in contention for the final two films of his too-short career, “Da 5 Bloods,” which came out two months before his death in August from colon cancer, and “Ma Rainey’s Black Bottom,” which was released in December. He’s in first place in the lead actor odds for “Ma Rainey” and in third place in supporting for “Da 5 Bloods.” “Ma Rainey” and “Da 5 Bloods” are both expected to score ensemble nominations — the former is...

In 2019, Julia Garner became the rare TV supporting actress to earn an individual Screen Actors Guild Award nomination for her performance as the feisty Ruth Langmore in “Ozark.” Since then, she has won two consecutive Emmys for the Netflix drama and just earned her third Critics’ Choice nomination. While she is predicted to earn another nomination from SAG-AFTRA for “Ozark” this year, she is also in contention for a project on the film side, “The Assistant.” And based on voters’ demonstrated love for her performance in “Ozark,” she could very well be a stealth Best Actress contender for her decidedly different turn in “The Assistant.”
In the film, Garner plays Jane, an assistant who works at a film production company who suspects her boss is a sexual predator engaging in affairs at the office. The actress gives a largely internalized performance, relying on subtle facial gestures and body language to...

There are literally thousands of actors in Hollywood competing with each other to attain success, but the biggest names largely tend to be split into two camps. There are the Actors with a capital ‘A’ who seek out challenging material that allows them to put themselves through the emotional wringer to deliver the best work possible, and then there are the movie stars, who create populist entertainment designed to appeal to the biggest audience and generate the largest box office numbers.
Ryan Reynolds is a talented individual, no doubt, but over the last decade or so, he’s largely been dependent on his established screen persona. In fact, you’d have to go back to 2015 biographical drama Woman in Gold to find the last time the 44 year-old didn’t rely on his innate comic timing and irreverent sense of humor to drive his performance, and since then he’s shot twelve movies.

Helen Mirren, who won an Oscar for her performance as Britain’s Queen Elizabeth II in “The Queen,” says Meghan Markle was “a fantastic addition to the royal family,” and she “applauds” Markle and Prince Harry’s decision to step back from royal duties, she tells Variety.
Mirren, who is the subject of an homage at the Berlin Film Festival this week and will receive the festival’s Honorary Golden Bear for Lifetime Achievement on Thursday, says of the couple’s decision to withdraw from the royal family: “I think their instincts are absolutely right, and I applaud them for it. Hugely actually. Of course, it is complicated.”
She adds: “Meghan Markle was a fantastic addition to the royal family – charming, did everything right, was gracious, was sweet natured, and seemed to be … Wow! What a lovely addition. Didn’t seem to be neurotic…

Believe it or not, Scarlett Johansson had never received a Screen Actors Guild Award nomination before. But that all changed Wednesday when she got not one but two individual ones — lead actress for “Marriage Story” and supporting actress for “Jojo Rabbit” — making it just the 11th time an actor has scored double individual film bids.
Johansson’s double-dipping comes just a year after Emily Blunt got shortlisted her performances in “Mary Poppins Returns” and “A Quiet Place,” winning supporting for the latter. Here are the first 10 instances:
1. Julianne Moore (1999): “The End of the Affair,” “Magnolia”
2. Judi Dench (2001): “Iris,” “The Shipping News”
3. Julianne Moore (2002): “Far From Heaven,” “The Hours”
4. Patricia Clarkson (2003): “The Station Agent,” “Pieces of April”
5. Jamie Foxx (2004): “Ray,” Collateral”
6. Leonardo DiCaprio (2006): “Blood Diamond,” “The Departed”

Sony Pictures Classics has picked up rights to “Lyrebird,” the directorial debut of billionaire businessman Dan Friedkin, Variety has confirmed.
The pact is for North American rights and marks one of the only sales at an acquisitions market that could be charitably described as moribund. That could change if, as rumored, a deep-pocketed buyer ponies up for the Hugh Jackman-led school embezzlement drama “Bad Education.”
If that deal happens, it will be a welcome reprieve. The handful of films looking for distribution that have found a studio home include “Military Wives,” which Bleecker Street bought, and “Dads,” a Bryce Dallas Howard documentary that sold to Apple. It’s unclear if the films on offer have been lackluster or if companies are growing concerned about the financial viability of the indie space in the wake of box office flops such as “Late Night” and “Blinded by the Light.”

What will the moviegoing public make of a film called “Lyrebird”? Oblique but apt, that title refers to an ostentatious Australian bird capable of mimicking the calls of countless other species — the relevance of which may not be immediately apparent to those intrigued by the true, post-World War II story of a notorious Dutch art dealer accused of selling a priceless cultural treasure to Nazi Reich Marshal Hermann Göring.
After being arrested and tried for collaborating with the enemy, Han van Meegeren mounted a most unconventional defense: He claimed that the artwork in question, “The Supper at Emmaus,” was not in fact a Johannes Vermeer masterpiece but a masterful forgery, painted by none other than himself. While the truth is considerably more complicated, van Meegeren’s story reduces neatly to the kind of handsome, upscale night-out offering that still draws sophisticated older audiences to art houses — catnip for those who...

Based on the tepid reception to “A Dog’s Journey” (the sequel to 2017 hit “A Dog’s Purpose”) earlier this summer, the trend of interior-voice canine flicks isn’t necessarily a case of unconditional love with moviegoers. But hopes are now being pinned on “The Art of Racing in the Rain,” the latest adaptation of a “first-person” animal story (this one a 2011 bestseller by Garth Stein), that dog-loving audiences — receptive to the notion that their four-legged companions contain hidden depths of English-language acquisition and philosophical awareness – will be ready once more to fill theaters when presented with family-friendly pet-centric fare.
Don’t let that “Art” in the title fool you, though: This sentimental slog about the relationship between a friendly golden retriever and the growing family of a race car driver is, under director Simon Curtis’ no-nonsense stewardship, about as box-checked and rubber-stamped as mainstream entertainment gets.

Poor Emily Blunt. After a stellar 2018 and earning Screen Actors Guild Awards nominations for “Mary Poppins Returns” and “A Quiet Place,” she failed to get an Oscar nomination Tuesday for either, becoming just the second double SAG nominee to go 0-2 with the academy.
Blunt follows in the dubious footsteps of Helen Mirren, who didn’t convert her SAG Awards bids for her 2015 films “Woman in Gold” and “Trumbo” into Oscar nominations. But at least Mirren was already a four-time Oscar nominee and a one-time winner; Blunt is still waiting for her maiden bid.
See Oscar nominations: Full list of nominees
The stats were on Blunt’s side. This was the 10th time a performer received two individual SAG Awards nominations. Besides Mirren, the other eight are:

2. Judi Dench (2001): “Iris,” “The Shipping News”

Exclusive: Ed Rubin has stepped down as Managing Director of Scott Free London, we have learned. Rubin, the former Origin Pictures head of film and TV whose credits as executive producer include BBC series The Woman In White and Helen Mirren feature Woman In Gold, joined Ridley Scott’s firm at the start of 2017.
His departure comes as the London division of Scott Free undergoes a shakeup with the TV division recently streamlined and the La office becoming more involved in the London operation, according to sources. It isn’t clear whether Rubin will be replaced. Scott Free confirmed Rubin’s departure.
Tom Hardy-fronted BBC series Taboo was Scott Free London’s last small screen show to hit UK screens in 2017. Jonas Akerlund’s feature Lords Of Chaos debuted at Sundance last year. Upcoming on the feature side is James Kent’s feature The Aftermath with Keira Knightley and Alexander Skarsgard.

Hope Gape is a cove on the south-east of the UK. “It’s where I went as a child,” Shadowlands, Gladiator and Les Miserables scribe William ‘Bill’ Nicholson tells me. “It was a place to be alone. “When the waves recede it leaves a vast expanse like the surface of the moon. It was like a secret world where you’re like a giant or a god. It was a place of escape, otherness.”
Hope Gap is also the name and location of Nicholson’s second feature as a writer-director. Bill Nighy, Annette Bening and Josh O’Connor star in the UK drama about the unraveling of a family unit after a father tells his son he plans on leaving his mother. Producers are Sarada McDermott (Fighting With My Family) and David M. Thompson (Woman In Gold).
Currently in post-production, the feature is a deeply personal one for the two-time Oscar nominated screenwriter.

Katie Holmes is returning to her horror roots. After spending recent (read: post-“Jack and Jill”) years working firmly in smaller-scale cinema, including supporting roles in films like “Logan Lucky” and “Woman in Gold” and directing and starring in her feature filmmaking debut “All We Had,” Holmes has signed on for a new high-profile gig. The actress and filmmaker will star in Stx Entertainment and Lakeshore Entertainment’s just-announced sequel, “The Boy 2,” which follows their 2016 horror hit “The Boy.”

Per the film’s official logline, the film follows a “young family” who, “unaware of the terrifying history of Heelshire Mansion … moves into the estate, where their young son soon makes an unsettling new friend, an eerily life-like doll he calls Brahms.” Holmes will lead the cast in the role of “Liza,” most likely the matriarch of a seemingly doomed family.
