A washed-up actor, who once played an iconic superhero, attempts to revive his career by writing and starring in a Broadway play.
The first movie in thirty-four years to win a Best Picture Oscar without a coinciding Best Editing nomination. The last film to do this was Ordinary People (1980). Both films also received the same number of wins, with four, including Best Director and Best Screenplay.

In the hospital, Riggan keeps the lilacs on top of the newspaper before entering the toilet. He keeps them on the edge of the bed. Later when he flies out of the window and we see Sam come in the lilacs and the newspaper both are a little away from the edge.
