The film opens with text stating it is loosely based on real events. In this case it is extremely loosely, with the filmmakers starting off from an incident related by Romain Gary, where he said a student named Laure (Adèle in the film) once came to him and stated he was Émile Ajar (the author's secret pen name), with mostly everything else made up.
