The Star Wars icon, who passed away in late 2016 just six weeks after wrapping on the fantasy movie, leads cast alongside singer and actress Rita Ora (Fifty Shades of Grey), Nell Tiger Free (Servant), Sebastian Croft (Heartstopper) and newcomer Kiera Milward.
Vertical has acquired North America and UK/Ire rights to Vlad Marsavin’s under-the-radar directorial debut and is lining up a limited theatrical run via AMC in the U.S. from June 23, 2023, followed by a digital release.
“The journey we have taken as filmmakers with this movie, has been as perilous as that of the movie itself,” explained director Marsavin about the delayed release. “From filming to screen it has taken us seven years. Venom crossed the $300m threshold via Sony Pictures Releasing International (Spri) this week and currently stands at $302.5m – but can it hold off Universal Pictures International’s (Upi) big push for Halloween?
A fourth successive weekend at number one for Sony/Marvel Entertainment’s comic-book adaptation might be a stretch too far even for Tom Hardy’s outrageously elastic anti-hero, given that Venom’s box office is dropping by around 50% each weekend, which puts it in the $16m-20m range in the upcoming Friday-Sunday corridor. Daniel Alfredson's claim to fame involves directing the second and third installments of the Swedish "The Girl With The Dragon Tattoo" trilogy. But his forays into English language filmmaking haven't fared so well. His last outing was the tepid "Kidnapping Mr. Heineken," which was followed by "Go With Me," which premiered last September at the Venice Film Festival to a lukewarm response. Read More: Interview: David Fincher Talks Violence, Unpleasant Revenge & The Odd, Perverse Relationship That Drew Him To The 'Girl With The Dragon Tattoo' Based on the book by Castle Freeman Jr, and starring Julia Stiles, Anthony Hopkins, Ray Liotta and Hal Holbrook, the story follows a young woman who is assaulted and stalked by local logging town thug Blackway. She refuses to leave town, and a posse of sorts comes together to take on Blackway. The resulting movie isn't so hot —Jessica Kiang calls it "dully shot,...

I'm only familiar with Taylor Schilling's work on the Netflix original series Orange is the New Black, in which she plays the show's lead character, Piper Chapman. Piper is the worst, and Schilling makes her fun to hate (or at least strongly dislike). But it looks like Schilling is heading from a women's prison to the world of sci-fi, because Deadline reports that she's joining Avatar star Sam Worthington in a new sci-fi movie called The Titan.
Set in a not-too-distant future, it tracks the journey of a military family that is relocated to take part in a groundbreaking experiment of man’s genetic evolution into space.
Could that description be any more vague? I don't know if the producers are trying to keep the story details under wraps because the movie is dependent on twists and surprises, or if they just did a terrible job writing a compelling synopsis.

★☆☆☆☆ Daniel Alfredson's appallingly bland backwoods drama Go With Me (2015) stars Anthony Hopkins as ex-logger Lester, who comes to the aid of harassed waitress Lillian (Julia Stiles). While Lester spends his evenings making garden ornaments in memory of his dead wife, Lillian is redecorating her dead mother's house. Trouble lurks in the hedgerows via stalker Blackway (Ray Liotta), who has already assaulted Lillian outside of her restaurant and decapitated her cat. The sheriff (Dale Wilson) proves worse than useless and suggests she go to find local Whizzer and ask for the help of his friend Scotty. Like a sneaky taxi driver the script takes us around the houses, rather than anywhere we want to go.
Whizzer (Hal Holbrook) doesn't know where his pal Scotty (Aaron Pearl) is but Lester, on an apparent whim, decides he will take up the mantle of Lillian's guardian angel. Not exactly moving with the lightning speed of an avenger,...

A little less than a year ago, we reported on Gerard Butler agreeing to star in the long-developing heist thriller Den Of Thieves. It’s taken some time, but the film should finally be shooting this year as The Wrap reports that Sam Worthington is on board to co-star. Writer/director Christian Gudegast originally co-wrote the script with Paul Scheuring back in 1998 and watched it tumble through a void of meetings, drafts and decisions. At one point, Peter Berg appeared set to direct it, but moved on to other things. Then, in 2008, Gudegast was handed the chance to call the shots himself.Butler, who is also an executive producer, is playing the thief figuring out his most audacious robbery yet, taking down the Federal Reserve in Los Angeles under the nose of a corrupt sheriff’s deputy. The plan becomes even more complicated when he’s caught between two groups of criminals.

The Babadook Along with It Follows, The Babadook is a bit of a re-energizer in the horror genre, delivering mood and atmosphere over jump scares and gore. ★★☆☆☆ Take care to not place too much hope into the misery-inducing yet somehow star-studded caper Kidnapping Freddy Heineken (2015). It's a head-scratcher of a flick if only for the fact that viewers will spend the duration of the film wondering what precisely caused Anthony Hopkins to sign on as the titular character. Based on actual events, this incarnation gives way to a shoddy production rather than quality storytelling. There's wasted potential here, but is there any saving grace? It's 1982 in Amsterdam. A group of best friends - also business partners - find themselves at the end of their rope. Their finances have been drained on their start-up company in light of a recession.

There are two new thrillers out this weekend in limited release that are well worth your time, and I reviewed them here. Two more indie thrillers hit both theaters and VOD yesterday, but they’re enough of a mixed bag for me to suggest you wait for their inevitable DVD or Netflix release instead. Both are produced and acted well enough, but they share a single trait that keeps them from the recommended list. For everything they do, it’s the things they don’t do that ultimately underwhelms. Cor van Hout (Jim Sturgess) is a man between jobs. It’s the early ’80s, and the economy in Amsterdam is in the canal leaving him far more motivated towards illicit employment. His friends are in the same boat — Jan (Ryan Kwanten) is good with his hands, Frans (Mark van Eeuwen) is a wild man and Willem (Sam Worthington) is an aggressive go-getter with an existing grudge against...

Yes, your first assumption is correct – Kidnapping Mr. Heineken details the imprisonment of Amsterdam’s most iconic beer entrepreneur, and even more shocking is that it’s based on a true crime. Back in 1983, Freddy Heineken and his driver Ab Doderer were kidnapped by local scoundrels and then released some three weeks later for 35 million Dutch guilders – the largest ransom ever paid for one individual. As an avid beer drinker and alcohol culture snob, my complete ignorance of the real event is surprising and shameful, but Daniel Alfredson does an amicable job of filling in the blanks. Peter R. de Vries’s source novelization serves as a proper jumping point for writer William Brookfield, as he and Alfredson find a tense balance between historical recreation and cinematic embellishment – either of which can easily sink a true story when handled clumsily.

There has been a shake-up to the Belgian tax shelter - one intended to squeeze out the “middlemen” perceived to have abused the system.
The new rules were introduced at the beginning of the year.
Under the revised system, producers are now required to apply for a government license.
“It is not a heavy procedure but the purpose of having a license is that it can be revoked in case of abuse of the system,” said Eyeworks’ Peter Bouckaert, president of the Flanders Film Producers Association.
The new system, operational since January 1st 2015, no longer features the loan, the equity part and the put option. Instead, there is now a Tax Shelter certificate. Investors are offered a tax exemption based on qualifying audiovisual expenditure in Belgium.

Check out the brand new trailer for Kidnapping Mr. Heineken.
Based on a true story, Kidnapping Mr. Heineken stars Anthony Hopkins, Sam Worthington, Jim Sturgess and Ryan Kwanten.

The shocking capture–by gunpoint in broad daylight on the streets of Amsterdam–resulted in the largest ransom ever paid for a kidnapped individual.
It was truly the perfect crime…until they got away with it.
The film is adapted by William Brookfield from the best-selling book by Peter R. de Vries.
Directed by Daniel Alfredson (The Girl Who Played With Fire, The Girl Who Kicked The Hornets’ Nest), Kidnapping Mr. Heineken is set for a release on iTunes/VOD and in theaters March 6 by Alchemy (formerly Millennium Entertainment).

True story or not, Kidnapping Mr. Heineken looks like a nice little thriller. Sam Worthington gets shit on quite a bit as an actor, but his ensemble work has been much stronger than his leading man roles. In this thriller, Worthington is flanked by Ryan Kwanten and Jim Sturgess in the tale of a kidnapping gone awry. At the center is Anthony Hopkins who looks to be turning in yet another duplicitous role. As you can see, director Daniel Alfredson has put together a nice visual style in the...

There's a chance you might remember a foreign film called The Heineken Kidnapping starring Rutger Hauer, about the abduction of Alfred Heineken, the heir to the beer empire of the same name. Well, there was another film about the same event, but Kidnapping Mr. Heineken puts more of a focus on the thriller nature of the story with Sam Worthington, Ryan Kwanten and Jim Sturgess attempting to pull of what would become one of the biggest crimes of the decade. But rather than the plan going wrong, the kidnapping of Mr. Heineken (Anthony Hopkins) actually works, but that's just the beginning. Watch! Here's the first trailer for Daniel Alfredson's Kidnapping Mr. Heineken, originally from Yahoo: Kidnapping Mr. Heineken is directed by Daniel Alfredson (The Girl Who Played with Fire) and written by William Brookfield. Crime doesn’t pay. Except, apparently, when it does. The kidnapping case of Alfred "Freddy" Heineken in the 1980s became famous for resulting in the biggest ransom for one person in history. And now the incident has been brought to the screen, with the first trailer for Kidnapping Mr. Heineken arriving via Yahoo.Daniel Alfredson, who worked two of the original Millennium Trilogy TV movies, has directed this one, with Anthony Hopkins suiting up to play the target himself, Freddy Heineken.Sam Worthington, Jim Sturgess, Ryan Kwanten, Mark van Eeuwen and Thomas Cocquerel are playing the men who hatched the scheme to swipe Freddy and hold him hostage. But despite a carefully crafted plan, things didn’t exactly go their way: while Heineken and his driver Ab Doderer were eventually released after payment of a 35 million guilder ransom, the criminals were eventually caught and served prison terms. One version of...

The first trailer for Kidnapping Freddy Heineken has been released and it just proves how the involvement of Anthony Hopkins makes any film instantly watchable. You can check out the Welsh titan in all of his glory below. There really is something just truly mesmeric about him. What a gem he is. Up until Anthony Hopkins' arrival, Kidnapping Freddy Heineken looked like a pretty run of the mill thriller, but The Girl Who Kicked The Hornets. Nest director Daniel Alfredson appears to have provided some great frenetic energy to the piece - and he especially looks to have handled the kidnapping sequences with aplomb. While Sam Worthington, Jim Sturgess and Ryan Kwanten look adequate in their parts, though, it's the emergence of Anthony Hopkins as Freddy Heineken that truly brought an edge to the clip. The Oscar winning Silence Of The Lambs star goes from being frail to tough...

Not to rush to judgment, but it's generally not a good thing when a movie featuring big names like Anthony Hopkins, Sam Worthington, Jim Sturgess, and Ryan Kwanten, and directed by Swedish "The Girl With The Dragon Tattoo" filmmaker Daniel Alfredson, doesn't have a U.S. distributor and opens abroad first. But such is the case with the crime flick "Kidnapping Freddy Heineken," and a new trailer has arrived. This one is actually based on the true story of a gang of criminals who kidnapped the titular beer baron and got the largest ransom ever paid out in history. But of course, it wasn't the easiest job in the world, and like we said, we don't want to rush to judgment. This does look like a decent little thriller that is perfectly fine being a (psychological) thriller with action beats, all framed with your usual genre trappings. And hey, if it's done well and entertaining,...

At 3 minutes and 26 seconds, this seems to be more of a showreel than a trailer – but it certainly whets the appetite for Kidnapping Freddy Heineken, regardless. Directed by Daniel Alfredson (The Girl Who Played With Fire), and written by William Brookfield (Doctor Sleep), the film is based on the work of Dutch investigative journalist and crime reporter, Peter R de Vries, who wrote ‘The Heineken Case’ in 1983, and ‘The Kidnapping of Alfred Heineken’ in 1987.
Heineken was Chairman and CEO of the brewing company, Heineken International, and was known to be one of the richest people in the Netherlands when he was kidnapped in 1983. His captors – Cor van Hout, William Holleeder, Jan Boelaard, Frans Meijer and Martin Erkamps – demanded a ransom of 35 million Dutch guilders which, when received, made it the highest ransom ever paid for one person.

Even if you have never heard about the film before, the title “Kidnapping Freddy Heineken” should tell you everything you need to know. Freddy Heineken was chairman and CEO of Heineken International, a brewing company that surely everyone is familiar with. And yes, the man really was kidnapped. In 1983, five criminals kidnapped Heineken and demanded a hefty ransom, 35 million Dutch guilders to be exact (equivalent to 16 million Euros). Naturally, a story like this demands to be seen on film and director Daniel Alfredson (“The Girl Who Played With Fire”) is thankfully up for the task. An international trailer for the film has recently popped up online and you can check it out below. “Kidnapping Freddy Heineken” has quite the cast. Sam Worthington, Jim Sturgess, and Ryan Kwanten play three of the five kidnappers while Anthony Hopkins, as you might expect, plays the title character. The kidnapping resulted in the largest...

Kidnapping Freddy Heineken‘s plot is right there in the title, but as the trailer reveals, there’s a lot more going on under the surface of this simple heist film. Now, if the real-life story of a beer baron’s grandson being kidnapped and ransomed for a large sum of money sounds like a silly concept for a movie, just think of how ridiculous a movie based on a federal agent faking a sci-fi movie in Iran to pull out hostages would be. Also consider that the powerful target of the person theft is played by Anthony Hopkins, and it looks as if director Daniel Alfredson told Hopkins to renew his role as Hannibal Lecter because he continuously prods his kidnappers with unmitigated bravado. Check out the trailer for yourself: Obviously there’s a lot to love there. Complexity, a little ultraviolence and the pedigree of the filmmaker who brought us the first two Dragon Tattoo...
