This article contains spoilers for The Walking Dead: Daryl Dixon episode 2 and The Last of Us season 1.
Something about the post-apocalyptic genre really lends itself to the “Lone Wolf and Cub” trope. Dubbed after a manga of the same name, the Lone Wolf and Cub concept sees a gruff old warrior shepherding an innocent child on a harrowing journey a la Din Djarin and the wee baby Grogu in The Mandalorian.
On the post-apocalyptic side of things, we’ve seen it before with the film Children of Men, in which grizzled freedom fighter Theo Faron (Clive Owen) guides young pregnant woman Kee across a hopeless wasteland. We’ve also seen it in the HBO adaptation of classic game The Last of Us, in which the broken down Joel (Pedro Pascal) leads humanity’s last best hope Ellie (Bella Ramsey) on an important mission. Now we’re seeing it again...

It’s no secret that Lucasfilm’s next big Star Wars series, Obi-Wan Kenobi, will be filled to the brim with nostalgia and fan service. The first trailer confirmed the show will bring back Luke Skywalker, Uncle Ben, and Aunt Beru on Tatooine; the Inquisitors from the Rebels animated series will be hunting Kenobi; and Darth Vader is back for revenge. And there are plenty of rumors and leaks out there suggesting that these are only a fraction of the cameos and callbacks in this six-episode limited series. Obi-Wan Kenobi will undoubtedly deliver the easter egg-y goodness Disney fans crave.
Bringing back these elements from the Prequel and A New Hope eras of Star Wars is a no-brainer, considering the Disney+ show takes place in between the two — 10 years after Revenge of the Sith but 9 years before the Original Trilogy. Like Rebels before it, Obi-Wan Kenobi is in the unique...

The Daimajin Trilogy will be available on Blu-ray July 27th from Arrow Video
The Daimajin Trilogy saw Daieis Kyoto studios bringing its own iconic movie monster to life in a unique but short-lived series that transplants the Golem legend to Japans Warring States period of the late-16th century.
In Daimajin, directed by Kimiyoshi Yasuda, the young son and daughter of the benevolent feudal lord Hanabusa flee to the mountains when their parents are slain by the treacherous usurper Odate. Ten years later, when the elderly priestess who has harbored them is also murdered, the rage of the slumbering ancient god that lies beneath the crumbling giant stone idol hidden deep in the forests in the mountains is invoked. In Return of Daimajin, Kenji Misumi brings his usual stylistic flourish, as the wrathful deity is roused from his new home on an island in the middle of a lake by...

The Mandalorian isn’t just one of the best TV shows in recent years and the best reason to subscribe to Disney+ this side of The Simpsons. For many fans, it’s a show that has reinvigorated their love of Star Wars.
As someone who has previously lamented the decline of Star Wars video games over the years, it’s that aspect of the show that fascinates me most. What has The Mandalorian figured out that recent Star Wars games still haven’t? What is it about The Mandalorian that turns even jaded fans into believers?
While The Mandalorian may not hold all of the answers, Star Wars video games could still learn a few things from the live-action TV series when it comes to how to tell exciting modern stories in the galaxy far, far away.

Following a very public deal with Sky that will see its customers able to access the streaming service on Sky Q and Now TV, Disney+ has finally confirmed that over 600 episodes of The Simpsons will be available to stream in the UK.
The news was received well by potential Disney+ UK subscribers, and those who had already been tempted by the reduced annual subscription offer advertised by the streamer here back in late February.

The toys of Baby Yoda from The Mandalorian that everyone complained about not being able to buy have now been made available to order from a number of outlets and the latest variation is Hasbro’s talking take on the cute green fuzzball that you’ll either find as adorable as its inspiration or a dead-eyed atrocity destined to traumatize innocent children.
To be clear, the speaking voice of this creation isn’t actual words, but an assortment of inarticulate baby noises that appear to have been recycled from Gremlins’ Gizmo and channeled though some dark side necromancy contained in the core of the cuddly plush figure. You can watch the disturbing homunculus in action below.

Star Trek’s George Takei is moving to Fluffytown to voice a panda in an animated kids’ series for the BBC.
Takei, who played Sulu in the classic sci-fi series, will voice Elder Panda in preschool series Love Monster, which is a co-production by the British public broacaster’s kids’ channel CBeebies, Boat Rocker Studios, and China’s UYoung.
The 54-part series, which will air in January 2020, is based on Rachel Bright’s Love Monster series. It follows the adventures of hairy hero, Love Monster, as he navigates the challenges of being the only monster in Fluffytown – a world of cute baby animals. With a lot of help from his friends, Love Monster learns to follow his heart rather than his slightly ‘over-thinky’ head, as he searches for the right thing to do.
Elsewhere, Episodes star Tamsin Greig narrates, while Javone Prince (PhoneShop), Sarah Hadland (Miranda), Lewis Macleod (Postman Pat...

If you love Star Wars: The Mandalorian, you should be reading the Lone Wolf and Cub manga that inspired its main storyline.
This Star Wars article contains spoilers for The Mandalorian.
A lone man stands against a failing Empire. By his side is a small infant, seemingly harmless and completely vulnerable without the warrior at its side. If you've been watching Disney+'s epic slowburn space western The Mandalorian, you might think that we're talking about episode two of the show, which centers on the titular hero and his new charge, a young alien who appears to be the same species as Master Yoda. But, in fact, we're describing the setup of Lone Wolf and Cub, one of the longest running and most iconic manga series of all time and a huge influence on the unexpectedly sweet story at the heart of the first live-action Star Wars series.

On paper, the martial-arts epic Into the Badlands is a show so unconventional that its creators were shocked that AMC wanted to make it. “We would have bet against it, for sure,” co-creator Miles Millar said Monday, still sounding a bit surprised that the show actually made it to air in November 2015. “The show ended up being the most satisfying experience of our career. We were given complete freedom. It’s been amazing because, you know, the show is insane.”
Millar’s writing and producing partner, Al Gough, didn’t agree with that — the show isn’t “insane,” he says, it is in actuality “totally batshit crazy.” Whether the series has been genuinely bananas or just aggressively quirky, Into the Badlands gave up the ghost tonight after its 32nd episode closed out its third season.

Jesse Eisenberg’s ability to hover inside a bundle of nerves has been the driving force behind his brand since “The Squid and the Whale,” but with few exceptions, his movies usually operate at a lower register. The occasional examples include Richard Ayaode’s Kafkaesque “The Double” and the under-seen surrealist romp “The Living Wake,” both of which deploy Eisenberg’s inscrutable features as narrative device. Now comes “The Art of Self-Defense,” which unleashes the actor in a sinister dark comedy as a karate-obsessed loser on the brink of losing his mind, and it’s about time the actor gave his wildest performance ever.

We talked to Bullet Catcher writer Joaquin Lowe about the supernatural western about to launch on Serial Box.
A girl without a future. A stranger hiding his past. And the remarkable, supernatural ability to turn bullets away from their targets—walking through a gunfight unscathed. In Joaquin Lowe’s Bullet Catcher, launching as a serial from Serial Box on October 18, elements of coming of age play against a mythological background that questions whether anything is really as simple as good and evil.
And the gun fu? There’s some serious fantasy martial arts going on here as well! Sony recently showed off the first gameplay footage for their new Samurai game Ghost of Tsushima. The game comes from Sucker Punch Productions, and this game seriously looks epically stunning! I'm super impressed by what I'm seeing here and this game is a must-have for any fan of the martial arts samurai genre.
The demo follows a samurai warrior named Jin Sakai, as he rides through beautiful grasslands. He ends up infiltrating a village to rescue a monk from invading Mongols, only to be betrayed by a longtime friend. As you'll see, the combat is quick, calculated, bloody and brutal.
As far as the story goes, it's set in 1274 Japan and follows one of the last surviving samurai and his fight against Mongol invaders.
Sucker Punch producer Brian Fleming had this to say on the PlayStation Blog:

Sony showed off the first gameplay footage of Sucker Punch Productions’ “Ghost of Tsushima” at its E3 showcase Monday night.
Sony choose to give fans a deeper dive into its upcoming projects rather than bombard them with announcements. During the lengthy demo, the protagonist, a samurai warrior named Jin Sakai, rides through beautiful grasslands, then infiltrates a village to rescue a monk from invading Mongols, only to be betrayed by a supposed ally. Combat is both quick and deliberate, bloody and brutal.
“We chose this particular sequence to capture a few of the essential visions we have for the game: a sprawling, beautiful Tsushima Island … brutal Mongol invaders … and katana combat that delivers on our target of ‘Mud, Blood, & Steel,'” Sucker Punch producer Brian Fleming wrote on the PlayStation Blog. Sucker Punch will talk more about the scope of the world, Jin’s progression, and the game’s storyline at a later date.

Sneak Peek the Belgian 'werewolf' horror feature "Cub" (aka "Welp") directed by Jonas Govaerts, available in a DVD, Blu-ray Combo Pack, from Anchor Bay Entertainment Canada and Raven Banner Entertainment, August 19, 2015:
"...'Sam' (Luijten) is a twelve-year-old cub scout that is frequently bullied by fellow scout members and pack leader 'Peter' (Stef Aerts). Fellow pack leader 'Chris' (Titus De Voodgt) and 'Jasmijn' (Evelien Bosmans) try to keep Peter and the others from dominating Sam, but are not always successful.
"When some of the pack's bullying causes them to lose their way in the mountains during a trip, Peter and Chris try to keep things light by telling the campers a campfire story about 'Kai', a werewolf thought to be living in that very forest.
"Soon after, Sam runs into a 'feral boy' (Gill Eeckelaert) that he believes to be the actual Kai. He tries to tell the others, but...

*full disclosure: an online screener of this film was provided by Artsploitation Films. Director: Jonas Govaerts. Writers: Jonas Govaerts and Roel Mondelaers. Cast: Maurice Luijten, Evelien Bosmans and Titus De Voogdt. Cub aka Welp is a film from Belgium. The film has released in several other territories, with a debut in North America scheduled shortly. The film is a coming-of-age horror feature. In the film, Sam's (Maurice Luijten) growing interest in women is interrupted by a small family of killers. Very entertaining, Cub is a brutal horror film, full of tricks and traps. Gorehounds will especially like this outing, which leaves much of the cast in bloodied pieces. Sam and a troupe of cubs are heading out into the wilderness. The camp counsellours are warned about disappearances, in the area. But, everyone disregards the message. Soon, the young cubs are disappearing into the forest and a strange, animal-like child is stalking all of them.

Stop me if you’ve heard this one before: a bunch of people head out into the woods to set up camp, only to be frightened by the inevitable spooky campfire stories before they start actually being brutally murdered by some sick and twisted freak. Yep, you guessed it: your typical slasher flick.
With Cub ("Welp"), Belgian director Jonas Govaerts’ debut feature, there is at least an effort to up-the-ante and inject a bit of originality into the sub-genre. But, is it effective enough to make Cub worth watching?

It has been awhile since something scary has crossed this horror fan's desk. The first trailer from Jonas Govaerts' Belgium film Cub is eerily creepy (lighting, characters). Also known as Welp, this title is mostly shot at night. In the film's first trailer, a feral child makes quick work of a cub scout group and its leaders. The clip houses a bit of mystery as the film's central villain uses tricks and traps, to quarry its prey. The full trailer for Cub is below. The story begins with the protagonist Sam (Maurice Luitjen). Sam has a vivid imagination. So, when Sam sees a strange child in the surrounding forest, others are quick to laugh and ridicule him. But, as the bodies turn up, Sam's reports of a killer kid become more and more real. Poachers, pits and psychopaths lie in the undergrowth. Cub will release in Europe later this year.
