So much of modern music feels like it was created by a computer algorithm to appeal to as many people as possible while having little artistic value. Dua Lipa’s Radical Optimism is the antithesis of that. The album’s producer discussed his history of working with avant-garde musicians and why he brought the same energy to working with the “Levitating” singer.
The connection between Dua Lipa’s ‘Radical Optimism’ and Charli Xcx
Danny L Harle is a songwriter and producer who has worked with artists such as Charli Xcx and Rina Sawayama. More recently, he was one of the producers of Lipa’s Radical Optimism. During a 2024 interview with Grammy.com, he was asked if he approached Radical Optimism differently than his work with underground singers.
“Not at all,” he replied. “My approach to this stuff, especially these days, is that I can just do my thing. I’m...

The best dance music knows how to take pain and set it to a disco groove. Dua Lipa’s “Hotter than Hell” has a fun title but it came from some dark places. For example, the “Cold Heart” singer revealed that “Hotter than Hell” was inspired by a man who put her down constantly. Lipa wrote the song in question to make the situation seem different than reality.
Dua Lipa didn’t want ‘Hotter than Hell’ to show her personal weakness
Lipa might make colorful, vibrant music videos, but her tunes deal with negative emotions. Songs like “New Rules,” “Break My Heart,” and “Cold Heart” have an emotional tension that you won’t find in your average dance track from Madonna or Katy Perry. During a 2017 interview with The New York Times, the star explained her approach to songwriting. “Heartbreak makes good stories, so sometimes, as much as heartbreak sucks,...

Celebrities have unusual ways of harkening back to the past. Harry Houdini had nothing to do with Dua Lipa until Lipa released her song “Houdini” from her album Radical Optimism. Still, referencing a stage magician from a century ago is an odd move for a pop singer. Lipa explained why she referenced an icon from another era in her song and what she is trying to accomplish with Radical Optimism.
Dua Lipa used Harry Houdini’s name as a metaphor
During a 2023 interview with Sleek, Lipa opened up about “Houdini.” “Houdini is an escape artist, and the whole idea behind this song is essentially about knowing where you stand, understanding what you deserve, and recognizing when to stay or execute a disappearing act, like Houdini,” she said. “It’s a bit tongue-in-cheek in terms of the metaphor, but fundamentally, it’s about knowing your worth.”

Dua Lipa‘s third studio album has arrived!
Radical Optimism is packed with hits like “Illusion,” “Training Season,” and “Houdini,” as well as eight more tracks.
“I wrote this album during my singledom,” Dua said in a statement. “I always came into the studio with some funny story, and they all inspired different songs. There’s a looseness and an honesty that I hadn’t had before.”
Dua describes Radical Optimism as “psychedelic pop” noting that “there are musical breaks and a mix of different sounds, and when you listen to it with your eyes closed, it opens up a very visual world.”
You can catch Dua performing her new songs on Saturday Night Live when she pulls double duty as host and musical guest on Saturday, May 4.

The glass is half full: Dua Lipa has dropped Radical Optimism! On Friday, the British singer officially released her third studio album, led by singles “Houdini,” “Training Season,” and “Illusion.”

At the root of “radical behaviorism,” a concept popularized by psychologist B.F. Skinner in the 1970s, is the belief that all behavior is the result of external conditioning and can thus be controlled. Think Pavlov’s dog. The title of Dua Lipa’s third studio album, Radical Optimism, nods to Skinner’s concept, but the British pop singer’s conviction that finding joy amid the chaos of life is simply a choice is more akin to that of a self-help book or the principles of Burning Man, which emphasize an empowering sense of self-reliance and expression.
“I know the mind is quick to throw away the moment,” Lipa pronounces on “Falling Forever,” a rollicking barnburner about keeping the lovelights aflame. She dispenses similar nuggets of wisdom and affirmations—often directed at herself—throughout Radical Optimism, acknowledging her control issues on “Whatcha Doing” while at the same time finding a bit...

Dua Lipa reminds you who she is on the psychedelic-dance single “Illusion.” Her third album Radical Optimism will be released on May 3rd.
Like the album’s previous singles “Houdini” and “Training Season,” “Illusion” is a big, bold dance track tapping into some of the psychedelic and rave influences that inspired her latest LP. On it, she makes it clear she knows what’s real and fake. “Ooh, what you doin’?/Don’t know who you think that you’re confusing/I be like, ‘Ooh, it’s amusing’/You think...

The countdown to Dua Lipa’s third studio album Radical Optimism will continue with the release of its third single “Illusion,” out April 11. The album will arrive in full on May 3, but first the singer has some bluff-calling to do.
“Don’t you know I could do this dance all night?” Lipa asks in the snippet for “Illusion,” which features pulsating pop production. “Ooh, what you doin’? / Don’t know who you think that you’re confusing / I be like, “Ooh, it’s amusing” / You think I’m gonna fall for an illusion.

German visualization tech developer Chaos, whose software includes the Engineering Emmy and SciTech Academy Award-honored V-Ray renderer, is developing new tech aimed at offering studios what it believes will be a less costly, more efficient and higher quality option for virtual production volumes.
To test Project Arena — a high quality real-time renderer — Chaos assembled a team of production pros to create a short using the tech in a virtual production environment. The Western-themed short, which is expected to debut in the spring, is being lensed by American Society of Cinematographers past president Richard Crudo, while the virtual production line producer is James Blevins, co-founder of virtual production firm Mesh and a former post supervisor on “The Mandalorian.”
The goal of the new renderer is to help productions more quickly move 3D-created scenes from popular creation tools such as Maya and Houdini onto LED screens. “I don’t know any other way to express it,...

Ariana Grande’s “Eternal Sunshine” has been somewhat of a surprise smash hit, right? While Grande has always been a huge star, it did seem like her star power had been gradually decreasing since her 2020 release, “Positions,” which did well by any pop star’s standards, but was a bit muted in the long run compared to her previous blockbuster “Thank U, Next.” Grande then faced public scrutiny in 2023 due to rumors surrounding her and “Wicked” co-star Ethan Slater, with speculation that Slater was still married and with a newborn child when he and Grande began a relationship. While those stories have been challenged, there was still the possibility of damage to her career.

That was not the case though. “Eternal Sunshine” debuted with 227,000 units in its first week in the US alone, more than 50,000 units better than her last album.

After debuting part of the track live at the Grammy Awards earlier this month, Dua Lipa has officially released her new single, “Training Season,” in full. Stream it below.
Elle Woods (one of our great philosophers) once said, “Exercise gives you endorphins, and endorphins make you happy,” but this high-energy single was created from a place of frustration for Dua Lipa. In a statement, she recalled the day the concept for the song appeared to her, sharing, “I had been on a string of bad dates, and the last one was the final straw.” She brought that sentiment into the studio and declared training season officially over.
The disco-pop sound on “Training Season” feels in line with Lipa’s previous single, “Houdini,” and with her Grammy-winning album, Future Nostalgia, while the focused, self-assured lyrics recall her breakthrough hit, “New Rules.” “Need someone to hold me close, deeper than I’ve...

Valentine’s Day is over but Dua Lipa is still looking for someone to give her heart to — but she wants to go big or go home. On her latest single “Training Season,” the singer is growing weary of her own judgement, running out of chances to get it right. “Are you someone that I can give my heart to? Or just the poison that I’m drawn to?” she questions, admitting: “It can be hard to tell the difference late at night.”

Dua Lipa may have been nominated for two Grammys for her Barbie soundtrack song “Dance The Night,” but the pop star was all about her new singles — “Training Season” and “Houdini” — when she performed a dance-heavy medley of all three songs to kick off the 2024 show.
Lipa delivered the first performance of the 2024 Grammys, after host Trevor Noah welcomed viewers from the roof of Los Angeles’ Crypto.com Arena.
Lipa started from inside a jungle-gym-like metal structure, where black-clad dancers were doing pull-ups and other exercises.
Singing her latest single, “Training Season,” set to be released Feb. 15, Lipa emerged from the structure, which her dancers tilted to the left and behind her as she moved over to yet another metal structure with more dancers.

Dua Lipa mastered the art of moving on long ago. On her self-titled debut album, she kicked an ex to the curb without a second thought on “Idgaf,” then used him as a textbook example of what not to do on “New Rules.” When another came crawling back during her Future Nostalgia era on “Don’t Start Now,” she did a full 180 and put herself first. With her third album on the horizon, Lipa is readying to move on once again — this time from the “Training Season” she’s outgrown.

Singer Dua Lipa, who has been reported to be dating British actor and model Callum Turner, has now opened up about the influences of love splits on her life.
“I think overall, (dating) is just a little confusing. It’s either through friends of friends or people you trust where you can meet new people, because (dating) is not really so straightforward when you are, I guess, a public person,” she told Rolling Stone magazine.
She added: “I’ve had break-ups in my life where I felt like the only kind of break-up you could have was when things just ended really badly. Things ending in a nice way was such a new thing… it taught me a lot.”
Her remarks appear to be a reference to her split from her French boyfriend Romain Gavras, 42, the son of acclaimed film director Costa-Gavras. Reports began circulating in December the pair had...

By now, fans of Dua Lipa know that her new album is psychedelia-inspired with contributions from Tame Impala’s Kevin Parker. In a new interview with Rolling Stone, the pop star dug deeper into the influences of her upcoming third studio LP, including the UK acts Primal Scream and Massive Attack.
In the profile, Rs staff writer Brittany Spanos reports that Lipa described the album as a “psychedelic-pop-infused tribute to UK rave culture” drawing heavy inspiration from Primal Scream and Massive Attack. Lipa named Primal Scream’s 1991 breakout album, Screamadelica, as a particular influence.
Other inspirations for the album include Britpop legends like Oasis and Blur, as well as ’90s rock and electronic acts like Moby and Gorillaz.
“This record feels a bit more raw,” Lipa explained in the interview. “I want to capture the essence of youth and freedom and having fun and just letting things happen, whether it’s good or bad.

Dua Lipa returned to Late Night with Seth Meyers on Tuesday (January 9th) to get hammered once again and cement her friendship with Meyers by getting matching tattoos.
After getting plastered together during Meyers’ “Day Drinking” segment in December, the duo reconvened to gulp down shots of tequila from the slide of a massive Barbie Dreamhouse. Then, they sat down with a tattoo artist named Bang Bang to get inked together.
Although Meyers initially suggested getting “a solitary dot” for his first tattoo, Lipa insisted they get “a little star” instead. Clearly nervous about the prospect, the late night host took a few shots before getting tattooed on his right calf.
Elsewhere in the episode, Lipa sat down with Meyers for a more traditional interview, in which they spoke about the infamous “Day Drinking” segment when the singer got too drunk to finish. After recalling how they did 12 shots in “like 45 minutes,...

Barry Manilow is standing poolside at his Palm Springs home, a spectacular, eight-bedroom hillside villa with far-reaching views of the Coachella Valley. He’s taller than one might expect — a little over 6 feet — and rail-thin, which makes him appear even taller. Manilow is relaxed this morning, tapping one spindly leg to a tune wafting through the speakers — not one of those easy-listening grooves that made him a music superstar, but a thumping slice of techno called “Love Regenerator,” by Calvin Harris. He has an entire Spotify library of that stuff. Manilow, it turns out, loves dance music.
At 80 — he reached the milestone last June — Manilow is coming off of one of the busiest stretches of a consistent, six-decade career. In hindsight, it’s her songs with Oscar-winning music producer Mark Ronson that have marked hugely transitional moments in the career of international pop sensation Dua Lipa. The road toward their most recent collaboration together, “Dance the Night,” the first single off the “Barbie” soundtrack that set the tone for the film’s record-breaking, billion dollar box office run, happens to start at the very beginning of her career in 2015.
“My first ever song that I ever put out, ‘New Love,’ I’d written with Andrew Wyatt and Emile Haynie,” Lipa said in a recent Zoom conversation with IndieWire. Wyatt, Ronson’s eventual co-composer on “Barbie,” later introduced her to the “Uptown Funk” hitmaker around the time he’d formed Silk City, his electronic supergroup with fellow platinum-selling producer Diplo. “He was looking for an artist to write with for ‘Electricity,’ and felt like he wanted something or someone with a deeper,...

Dua Lipa joined Seth Meyers for the latest installment of the “Day Drinking” segment from his Late Night show.
The two “enjoyed” cocktails and played drinking games inspired by “Houdini.” Later, they played a game called “Idgaf” in which they answered an embarrassing question or took a shot, leading Meyers to name John Oliver as his least favorite late night host and confirm he has a favorite child. Meanwhile, Dua revealed her favorite Albanian swear sword and lamented about how fashion designers next think about the “drunk girls” when creating outfits.
The segment arrives as Dua Lipa is on the tails of her latest release, “Houdini,” a colorful pop track produced by Danny L Harle and Tame Impala’s Kevin Parker. The track was named Consequence’s Song of the Week when it debuted, and arrives ahead of a full, psychedelia-inspired album due sometime in 2024, which will feature more contributions from Parker.

If the biggest, hookiest songs of 2023 are united by anything, it’s the insurgents who made them. For one, English singer PinkPantheress made good on her underground fandom with a remix of “Boy’s a Liar,” featuring raspy-voiced female rapper of the moment Ice Spice, whose eye-rolling attitude ingeniously cuts against her own unguardedly emotional pop minimalism.

On her enigmatic new single “Houdini,” Dua Lipa is a slippery illusionist who is hard to catch and quick to leave. It’s reflective of her approach to the latest era of her career as she preps the release of her third studio album, which marks a departure from the disco dream that defined 2020’s Future Nostalgia. But before Lipa performed her grand vanishing act and disappeared into her new psychedelic soundscape, Barbie the Album executive producer Mark Ronson caught her at just the right moment.
