A film about loneleness and death. About high sensitivity of a girl and the cold - cynical attitude of the adults. A film like a porcelain. The central scene- the girl in bathtube. And, sure, her eyes. Short, an admirable work. About death . And about people.

"The Lipstick Stain" is a 2014 10-minute live action short film, so this one has its 5th anniversary this year and it is one of the more recent filmmaking efforts by writer and director Dagny Looper. The main reason this has garnered some attention in recent months is not her though, but lead actress Sophia Lillis, who had her breakthrough not too long ago with the film "It" and a lot of it is probably due to her looks, maybe even more than to her talent with her pretty unique easily recognizable tomboyish appearance. At least I cannot say that she won me over in said movie and here she did not manage either to do so, so that I would say it would be nice if they had cast another lead actress because I felt that the story offered some potential, even if if it was far from perfect too. There were some moments I thought were rather unrealistic, especially in the second half and as realism clearly is a key aspect here in term of what they were going for, this is a negative deal breaker unfortunately. The bleakness is nice otherwise, the soundtrack is okay too. Maybe the film identifies itself too much through the general awkwardness of it all. But that is just subjective perception, others may not see it this way. I still thought that these 10 minutes maybe could have worked better as an extract of a full feature film, in the sense of that these scenes could belong to a 100-minute movie or so as part of the story in terms of character development and elaboration, but as an individual short film it is not working for me to an extent I hoped it could work. So while this is far from a failure, I still give it a thumbs-down. Not too big on this Looper/Lillis collaboration and it's not the only one between the two. Watch something else instead.
