In a city of humanoid animals, a hustling theater impresario's attempt to save his theater with a singing competition becomes grander than he anticipates even as its finalists' find that their lives will never be the same.
At 110 minutes long, this is Illumination Entertainment's longest film.

The last time that Buster Moon rides his moon down to the stage he starts at the top facing the audience. The camera view changes to the audience laughing, then moves to behind the moon to show Buster facing the wrong way, and looking up as if in surprise. He then turns to face the audience and continue his introduction. However, it is possible he just changed positions off screen to joke with the audience.
In the Illumination Entertainment logo, 4 Minions are singing the word "Illumination". The last one, Bob, sings the 'tion' part so long and loud, the 'MIN' and 'ION' parts short out. After realizing what he has done, he says "Oops"
