When Greg Sestero, an aspiring film actor, meets the weird and mysterious Tommy Wiseau in an acting class, they form a unique friendship and travel to Hollywood to make their dreams come true.
To promote the film the distributor rented the same billboard on Highland Avenue in Los Angeles that Tommy Wiseau rented for five years to promote The Room (2003), mimicking the layout of the original billboard and including a phone number to RSVP to screenings.

In a restaurant scene, there is a Coca-Cola umbrella with a more recent Coke bottle design on the umbrella. This scene takes place in 1999.
With the exception of the title itself, there are no opening credits in this film.
