The story of Barry Seal, an American pilot who became a drug-runner for the CIA in the 1980s in a clandestine operation that would be exposed as the Iran-Contra Affair.
The man Barry spoke to in the hallway of the White House is portraying George W. Bush, who is the son of then Vice President George H. W. Bush. He mentions he flew with the Air National Guard from 1968-74.

In the opening scenes the co-pilot has three shoulder stripes. When he goes to sleep he has his hat on and three shoulder stripes then four shoulder stripes and no hat while sleeping. After a while, the co-pilot is back to his original three shoulder stripes.
Among the last lines of the credits, the sentence "Yes, we know it's not El Salvador" is shown which is a reference to a joke about mistaking El Salvador for Nicaragua on the map. In fact, the country on the map was neither El Salvador nor Nicaragua - it was Honduras, hence the line in the credits.
