A team of scientists explore an uncharted island in the Pacific, venturing into the domain of the mighty Kong, and must fight to escape a primal Eden.
To prepare for filming, Jordan Vogt-Roberts screened the South Korean monster movie The Host (2006), the South Korean western The Good the Bad the Weird (2008), and the documentary Hearts of Darkness: A Filmmaker's Apocalypse (1991), for the cast.
This planet doesn't belong to us. Ancient species owned this earth long before mankind. I spent 30 years trying to prove the truth: monsters exist.
The Athena cargo ship used to carry the team to the island wasn't built until 2003.
SPOILER: There is a scene after the closing credits: Brooks and Lin meet Conrad and Weaver and show them records that indicate other monsters existing on Earth; the monsters seen are Rodan, Ghidorah, Mothra and Godzilla. The scene ends with Godzilla's roar. This leads into Godzilla Sequel (2019).
