A five-year-old Indian boy gets lost on the streets of Calcutta, thousands of kilometers from home. He survives many challenges before being adopted by a couple in Australia. 25 years later, he sets out to find his lost family.
In May 2014, The Weinstein Company sealed a $12 million deal for worldwide distribution of the film, before any cast was attached to the project.

The bus that zooms past Saroo in Calcutta while he is running away from his captors as well as buses shown in a later shot were not there in Calcutta in 1986. These models were introduced in the 2000s.
There is no opening title card, only opening credits; the title card doesn't appear until the end.
