Batman is one of DC Comics' tentpole characters, and with that high reputation comes various renditions of his origin story. It's one of the most iconic origin stories in the superhero genre, even if it resulted in retreading familiar ground. Bruce Wayne's beginnings, from a traumatized young boy who saw his parents murdered in front of him to a brooding vigilante for justice, are essentially common knowledge.
This story is about as well-known as characters like Spider-Man, but that also means there have been some welcome and memorable interpretations of the Dark Knight's origins. TV shows like Gotham may have lost some focus in its storytelling, but movies like Batman Begins and Mask of the Phantasm are origin stories that fans won't likely forget.

When we think about DC Comics TV shows, our mind quickly takes us to CW or CW-adjacent projects, such as Smallville, Arrow, and Gotham. If we're lucky, our memories will conjure up scenes from animated classics like 1992's Batman: The Animated Series or 1999's Batman Beyond. But if there's something that we have to remember, it is that our minds can sometimes play tricks on us. In reality, DC's television portfolio isn't limited to spandex-filled young adult hits and '90s cartoons. Things can get a lot more interesting, especially when we start to take into consideration the publishing house's imprints, such as Vertigo and WildStorm. In 2022, a miniseries derived from one of the publisher's titles made its way to TV and streaming and barely made a dent in our collective consciousness. Do you remember Dmz?...

The tales of Heath Ledger’s dedication to the role of The Joker in Christopher Nolan’s The Dark Knight have been shocking the world even though the film was released twelve years ago. The actor famously gave the role his all, locking himself in a room for days, journaling as the Clown of Gotham City, and even begging Christian Bale to beat him up for real.
Heath Ledger as Joker
It is safe to say that the actor gave and earned many scars after playing the role of this iconic character. Even though the methods he used to play the character were extreme, it would seem that there was nothing he would not have done for his perfect performance.

Many iconic Batman villains were considered for Tim Burton's Batman sequels, like Two-Face and Riddler, showcasing Burton's imaginative vision. Stars like Billy Dee Williams and Robert De Niro would have been stand-out contenders for major roles in Burton's Batman universe, with perfect casting potentials. Had Tim Burton continued his Batman series, actors such as Tim Robbins and Anthony Hopkins could have brought new depths to classic villains.
The two Batman movies made by Tim Burton remain a well-loved piece of the character's history, but had he made any more movies about the hero, he would have needed to cast other major villains. Even decades after their release, Tim Burton’s superhero movies still rank highly in Batman's movie history, as Burton’s unique style and his approach to both the hero and the wider superhero genre made for two exciting adaptations. However, Burton’s run of Batman movies ended after just two films,...

Doctor Death brings the perfect combination of intellect and physical threat for a dark Batman narrative in the Dcu. Mr. Bloom's horror and unique abilities make him a terrifying and compelling villain for the Dcu reboot. Condiment King could provide either comic relief or a dark twist as a live-action villain in the Dcu franchise.
Several incredible Batman villains have still not made their live-action debut and would be ideal candidates for the Dcu. Many classic Batman villains have appeared throughout the DC movie timeline, creating some of the most celebrated performances in comic book movie history. The Dcu's Batman: The Brave and the Bold is the first of several Batman movies produced in James Gunn's Dcu reboot, with numerous other projects that could include classic Dark Knight foes.
Many beloved characters who would be great for the Dcu have already appeared in live-action television series, such as Gotham and Arrow.

When making The Dark Knight films, Christian Bale and Christopher Nolan had a pact that they would walk away if they were fortunate enough to make three films. The pair stayed true to this vision and concluded their Batman adventure after The Dark Knight Rises. But if Nolan were to make a potential fourth film in the series, one fan had the perfect villain and actor suggestion for the Oppenheimer director.
Fan creates a trailer for a potential fourth film in Christopher Nolan’s The Dark Knight trilogy
The fan made a concept trailer in 2012 with clips from previous films and chose The Riddler as the villain for the film. The fan’s choice of actor to play The Riddler was the Oscar-winning actor Casey Affleck. While the fan’s idea of a fourth film never came to fruition, it still has a lot of potential.

Lucifer
As mentioned previously, Brandt is most known for her role as Lucifer’s (Tom Ellis) right-hand Mazikeen in the hit TV series Lucifer. Mazikeen a.k.a. Maze is known for her fierce loyalty, though she sometimes struggles to adapt her brash nature to the human world. Brandt does a phenomenal job of portraying Maze’s growth from demon with a penchant for sadistic torture to a slightly more vulnerable and human demon with a penchant for sadistic torture.
With a variety of roles under her belt, here’s where else you’ve seen Lesley-Ann Brandt before.

Robert Pattinson’s Batman could have been a part of James Gunn’s Dcu but has since been labeled an Elseworld story, distinct from what will be offered in the Dcu. However, despite the more grounded approach that the character and the universe have taken, it is possible to tie it in with characters like Superman, Wonder Woman, and the wider DC Universe.
Robert Pattinson as Batman in The Batman
Matt Reeves’ version of The Dark Knight will exist in its own little universe for the time being. A different version of Batman will be part of the wider Dcu, one that will make its debut with Damien Wayne as its Robin. However, should the need arise to include Robert Pattinson’s Batman into the mix, multiple avenues are afforded to the Dcu, to stitch the Reeves-verse with the wider Dcu.

Jiro Kuwata's Batman manga was the first-ever manga adaptation of Batman, based on Adam West's TV portrayal. Kuwata's Batman depicts a kinder, gentler Caped Crusader compared to the modern "Dark Knight" persona. The manga blends superhero themes with Adam West's lighthearted character, emphasizing problem-solving over violence.
While Batman is generally known as a classic American comic book hero, he also has an extensive history as a Japanese manga superhero, and one adaptation stands out from the rest for its depiction of Batman not based on the hardcore "Dark Knight" persona but rather on the classic TV show with Adam West.
Indeed, there have been no less than five manga adaptations of Gotham's Caped Crusader – the most recent being 2023's One Operation Joker series. Jiro Kuwata's Batman, which ran for 53 issues between April 1966 and May 1967, was the first-ever manga adaptation of Batman. Debuting decades before the manga revolution in the United States,...

Warning! Contains Spoilers For Batman: City of Madness #3!
Jeyvone's armored Robin suit is a standout with high-waisted pants and long red sleeves. Jeyvone ultimately resists the Batman Below's influence and puts Robin behind him with Bruce Wayne's help. Jeyvone's design showcases his desire to feel protected, highlighting the importance of not every traumatized child becoming a Robin.
Each Robin has had a unique suit that they've brought to the table along with their personalities and skillsets. While the alternate-universe Robin from Batman: City of Madness was never destined to be Batman's sidekick, he does get his own suit, and its armored design is a standout among what Robins usually get. While Jeyvone will never return to the role of Robin, readers can still see what he would've looked like in the role.
Batman: City of Madness #3 by Christian Ward and Hassan Otsmane-Elhaou shows the Batman Below attempting to create his own evil Robin.

Despite being significantly hit by the WGA and SAG-AFTRA strikes in 2023, U.K. film studios and production facilities are looking to pick back up where they left off after a record-breaking year for film and high-end television production spend in 2022.
When asked what the industry can expect in terms of business in the year ahead, Samantha Perahia, head of production U.K. at the British Film Commission, says she feels positive that demand “is going to be ramping up.”
She continues, “We already know that some of our studio facilities in the U.K. are getting very busy. While not every facility in the U.K. is jampacked again, there seems to be some momentum now, which is very welcome.”
The production spend in the U.K. jumped from £726 million ($376 million) in 2016 to $7.8 billion in 2022. At the same time, the U.K. considerably expanded its studio and stage provision to...

Initially, the idea of getting a Suicide Squad game from the studio that blessed the industry with the Arkhamverse seemed like an exciting prospect. However, things started going downhill when Rocksteady revealed that Kill the Justice League would be a live-service title.
That doesn’t even scratch the surface of all of the massive hindrances that the game had to face leading up to its release, ranging from numerous leaks to a disastrous early access launch.
All of these things definitely didn’t help Suicide Squad: Kill the Justice League‘s reputation, but it seems that even after giving the game a fair chance, the majority of players have decided to spend their time doing something more worthy of it.
The Steam Charts for Suicide Squad Aren’t Looking Good Suicide Squad: Kill the Justice League only managed to reach an all-time peak of just over 13,000 players on Steam.

Charles Melton’s awards campaign for his breakout role in “May December” started in May when the Todd Haynes drama co-starring Julianne Moore and Natalie Portman premiered at Cannes.
Since then, Melton has gone on to receive a slew of award nominations and wins. He picked up Golden Globe and Independent Spirit Award noms and won a Gotham for outstanding supporting performance.
Fans of the film, however, were disappointed when Melton didn’t receive an Oscar nomination, and the movie only earned one for original screenplay.
But, I’m glad to report that Melton is doing just fine. “I’m happy,” Melton told me Wednesday night at Cultured’s art and film issue dinner (Melton and Lakeith Stanfield appear on separate covers of the magazine). “I just got back from Hawaii. Little Joker, the newest and highly anticipated villain in Batman: Gargoyle of Gotham, is described as "evil in its purest form" and a "sinister child". This child's appearance mirrors that of the Joker, with a bone-white face and messy red and green paint. It seems Joker is on the brink of sharing his moniker with Batman’s newest and potentially most horrifyingly creepy adversary yet—Little Joker. DC Universe head James Gunn weighs in on a rumor that Disney has exclusive TV rights to Batman, a mainstream popular character who has yet to star in any live-action TV show since the 1960s series.
James Gunn responds to a Thread user who pointed out Batman's limited presence in live-action TV shows, which is strange considering the character is high on most people's lists of favorite comic book heroes. If this isn't odd enough, there's also an ongoing rumor that Disney has the final say on Batman's TV appearances after the 1960s Batman that starred Adam West. Aside from mere references to Batman in shows like Smallville and Birds of Prey, the character usually only appeared as Bruce Wayne in Batwoman or Gotham Knights, though he appeared very briefly in the final shot of the prequel series Gotham. Some TV shows mislead viewers through marketing or their titles. TV shows may choose to lean into more accessible tropes to appeal to a larger audience. Even if a TV show delivers something unexpected, it may still succeed.
While most TV shows make their audience and story pretty clear from the outset, some go out of their way to mislead viewers about what they're really about. This deception can take many forms. Sometimes, it can be as simple as a deliberately provocative title. On other occasions, the scope and themes of a show can evolve in such a way that even the creators couldn't have predicted what was to come. Whatever the reason, a misleading TV show can be a surprisingly rewarding viewing experience.

Every studio wants its own massive cinematic universe. Though many have tried (never forget the Dark Universe), none have managed to be nearly as successful as the Marvel Cinematic Universe. Sony's equivalent, the universe formerly known as Sony Pictures Universe of Marvel Characters (or Spumc), is now four movies deep (with at least two more coming this year). All the movies so far have revolved around supporting characters in the "Spider-Man" comics, mostly villains, but that's about to change this weekend.
The latest entry in Sony's Marvel universe is "Madame Web," the first movie that doesn't center on a villain, but instead, focuses on a hero and ally of Spider-Man. A sign of the downfall of civilization, or just the latest proof of superhero fatigue, "Madame Web" follows Cassandra Webb, a paramedic who discovers she has the spider-like ability to see the future. This article contains spoilers for "Madame Web."
While Miles Morales is thriving with an Oscar-winning film and an Oscar-nominated sequel, Peter Parker's future in film is uncertain. After the end of Tom Holland's trilogy, the partnership between Marvel and Sony has been nebulous. Sure, there was that "Morbius" post-credits scene, but things have been very quiet when it comes to the future of Tom Holland as Peter Parker.
It doesn't help that, in the time since "No Way Home," Sony has been making moves in their own universe, from the upcoming "Kraven the Hunter," hopes of another go at "Sinister Six," and even a live-action Miles Morales movie. All of this indicates that Sony wants a big spidey-future that does not depend on Marvel Studios. This includes "Madame Web," the latest movie that seems like it should involve Spider-Man, yet doesn't. The movie focuses on a different spider-powered hero...

Actor Milo Ventimiglia missed out on playing the Dark Knight in Matt Reeves' The Batman, but he says it's "okay" that the potential casting didn't work out.
In 2019, Milo Ventimiglia shared how he had auditioned for Bruce Wayne in The Batman, only to be told by the studio that he was "too old." The role would ultimately go to Robert Pattinson, but that doesn't mean Ventimiglia can't get another chance to play the character. Currently, a Brave and the Bold film is in the early works at DC Studios, and that will mean casting a new actor to play Batman for the Dcu. Speaking about the possibility with ComicBook.com, Ventimiglia has already taken himself out of the running, convinced that if he were to try this time around, he'd be told that he's not old enough.

The 2010s saw a major shift in live-action DC superheroes on TV, with the Arrowverse and other shows gaining prominence alongside the Dceu movies. Gotham, a Batman prequel series, explored the morally gray world of the titular city and ended after a successful five-season run. The Flash had a nine-season run but ultimately struggled with overpacked narratives and declining special effects compared to Gotham.
The 2010s marked a significant decade for DC's live-action superheroes on television, and as Gotham and The Flash reach the decade milestone since their premiere, it’s worth revisiting their legacies. While the preceding decade offered a plethora of DC Animated Universe classics, only the Superman prequel series, Smallville, dominated the live-action representation of DC comics on TV. The 2010s marked a watershed moment with the DC Extended Universe movies releasing in cinemas and the Stephen Amell-led Arrow kickstarting its own DC universe for CW-distributed titles like Black Lightning,...

Jason Reitman is staying mighty busy these days. Less than 24 hours after the release of the latest trailer for "Ghostbusters: Frozen Empire," four major casting announcements were made for his next project, "SNL 1975." The film will attempt to tell the true story of what went on behind the scenes before the broadcast premiere of "Saturday Night Live" on NBC, highlighting the real-time bedlam with some of the most legendary names in American comedy. Reitman co-wrote the script with his "Ghostbusters" collaborator Gil Kenan and is basing the story on the firsthand accounts of those who were there. Lest we forget, Reitman's father is the legendary Ivan Reitman, so these comedy titans were the friends and colleagues of the family. If anyone can get serious insight, it's Reitman.
