While waiting for their big breaks, two proper L.A. dreamers, a suavely- charming, soft-spoken jazz pianist and a brilliant, vivacious playwright, attempt to reconcile aspirations and relationship in a magical old-school romance.
Ryan Gosling had heavy training to learn piano for the film, even having a piano put in his home for his lessons, which he admitted drove longtime partner Eva Mendes crazy as he played the same songs over and over.
What is that? Is that a script?
Mia: It's a play.
Alexis: A play? You better give us all roles!
Mia: Actually, it's a one-woman-show, so I can't...
Tracy: Is that gonna happen every time?
Mia: I think so.
The day Sebastian visits Mia at her coffee shop, Mia entered work wearing black pants with a yellow bag. When Mia leaves work, she is wearing a blue skirt with a red bag. When they show a long shot of Sebastian and Mia walking on the lot, she is seen to be wearing black pants. Then in the next shot, she is wearing the skirt again.
There is a title card at the very beginning that says "Filmed in CinemaScope."
