While navigating their careers in Los Angeles, a pianist and an actress fall in love while attempting to reconcile their aspirations for the future.
The audition scene, where the casting director interrupts Mia's emotional performance to take a phone call, was actually inspired by one of Ryan Gosling's auditions in real life.
What do you mean you don't like jazz?
Mia: It just means that when I listen to it, I don't like it.
In the first scene, the dancing performance is not continuous based on the shadow pattern. When the back door of the truck is opened and the music band starts playing, people dance behind the truck. Then the camera turns 180 degrees. From here, the sun's shadow pattern is changed which shows that the sun has moved in the sky and the scene is not continuous.
There is a title card at the very beginning that says "Filmed in CinemaScope."
