The 30th anniversary of Paris will be available as a 1xCD or 2xLP set. Pre-orders are now ongoing.

Season 2 of young adult romance “Heartstopper” has arrived on Netflix, accompanied by a soundtrack filled with pop and rock. Adapted from Alice Oseman’s graphic novels, the new season continues the cute, queer, colorful and cartoon-embellished story.
Now that they are boyfriends, Nick Nelson (Kit Connor) and Charlie Spring (Joe Locke) face the nuanced challenges of Nick’s decision to come out to his family and friends. Elle Argent (Yasmin Finney) and Tao Xu (William Gao) fight their own butterflies. The first episode kicks off on a solid note with Maggie Rogers’ “Shatter” and Fitz and the Tantrums’ “Out of My League.” The 1975’s “The Sound” uplifts episode three after a stressful round of testing for the Year 11 students. Taylor Swift’s...

Robert Smith serenaded his wife of 34 years, Mary Poole, with The Cure’s “Plainsong” during a recent performance on the band’s ongoing “Shows of a Lost World” tour.
A newly released fan-captured video, reportedly from The Cure’s May 24th concert at Los Angeles’ Hollywood Bowl, shows the frontman facing away from the audience and singing directly to Poole backstage. With an unbroken, stoic delivery, he recites the song’s closing lyrics “Like I’m living at the edge of the world/ ‘It’s just the way I smile,’ you said” before taking a long pause to make some discernibly intense eye-contact with his wife, then turning back to the audience. Watch the interaction below.

The Cure kicked off their first North American tour in seven years with a show at Smoothie King Center in New Orleans on Wednesday.
The Robert Smith-led band delivered a 29-song setlist that included several new songs presumably taken from their long-teased new album, Songs of a Lost World, including “Alone,” “And Nothing Is Forever,” “A Fragile Thing,” and “I Can Never Say Goodbye.” During the encore The Cure dusted off “A Thousand Hours,” from Kiss Me Kiss Me Kiss, and “Six Different Ways” from The Head on the Door (neither song had been played since 1987).
See the evening’s full 29-song setlist and fan-captured performance footage below.
The North American leg of the “Songs of a Lost World Tour” runs through early July. The tour’s ticket on-sale has been quite the ordeal, but there are limited quantities still available via Ticketmaster.

Kathryn Busby, who was hired by Starz in January to take over as president of original programming, joined a premium cable network with two major tentpoles: The “Outlander” and “Power” franchises. So she did what any good network executive might do: She leaned into them.
“They are monsters,” she says of the two worlds. “Power” ended its run in 2020 but spawned the spinoffs “Power Book II: Ghost,” “Power Book III: Raising Kanan” and “Power Book IV: Force.” And “Outlander,” which recently wrapped its sixth season (with a 16-episode Season 7 already ordered), is about to get its first scripted spinoff as well: The prequel “Outlander: Blood of My Blood,” which the network confirmed earlier this month.
Busby, who talked to Variety as Starz prepared to unveil its latest wares on Thursday at the network’s virtual TV Critics Assn. press tour panel, says the two shows help define Starz, and its programming focus.

The usual prep for Sundance involves a good deal of packing (warm coats, snow-ready boots, a dozen thermals and a lot of Theraflu) and several weeks of intense physical training (wind sprints to better catch fast-moving shuttles, long stairmaster sessions for those screenings at the fourth floor Library theater, extreme-cold endurance tests for long waits to enter the Eccles). Peacock has quite the treat for us this summer.
The streaming service has announced that its highly-anticipated new drama series Dr. Death will be available to stream Thursday, July 15.
Based on Wondery’s hit podcast, Dr. Death is inspired by the terrifying true story of Dr. Christopher Duntsch (Joshua Jackson), a rising star in the Dallas medical community.
Young, charismatic, and ostensibly brilliant, Dr. Duntsch was building a flourishing neurosurgery practice when everything suddenly changed.
Patients entered his operating room for complex but routine spinal surgeries and left permanently maimed or dead.
As victims piled up, two fellow physicians, neurosurgeon Robert Henderson (Alec Baldwin) and vascular surgeon Randall Kirby (Christian Slater), as well as Dallas prosecutor Michelle Shughart (AnnaSophia Robb), set out to stop him.
The series explores the twisted mind of Dr. Duntsch and the failures of the system designed to protect the most defenseless among us.
It explores the ‘why’ behind Dr.

The first trailer for Peacock’s “Dr. Death” is here, featuring Joshua Jackson as “either the most incompetent surgeon… or a sociopath.”
The limited series is based on Wondery’s hit podcast of the same name and tells the terrifying true story of Dr. Christopher Duntsch, a charismatic Dallas surgeon with a flourishing neurosurgery practice — and a growing list of patients who come in for routine spinal surgeries and leave permanently maimed or dead.
As the bodies under Duntsch’s care pile up, fellow surgeons Robert Henderson (Alec Baldwin) and Randall Kirby (Christian Slater), as well as Dallas prosecutor Michelle Shughart (AnnaSophia Robb), set out to stop him. According to the series logline, “‘Dr. Death’ explores the twisted mind of Dr. Duntsch and the failures of the system designed to protect the most defenseless among us.”
“Duntsch is never going to stop on his own,” Baldwin’s Henderson says at one point in the trailer.

Kiley replaces Stephen Frears, who had signed on for the project in January but had to step away due to scheduling conflicts given the shift of production dates due to coronavirus pandemic. Dr. Death, from Ucp, was among a slew of shows whose production was delayed by months amid the pandemic.
Kiley leads an all-female Dr. Death directing team, which also includes Jennifer Morrison, who will direct the third and fourth episodes, and So Yong Kim, who will direct the remaining episodes.
Dr. Death explores the twisted mind of a sociopath and the failures of the system designed to protect the most defenseless among us.

Producers Mollye Asher (“The Rider”), Mynette Louie (“The Tale”) and Derek Nguyen (director of “The Housemaid”) announced the launch of a new production company on Tuesday called The Population.
The group will focus on producing film and TV projects by or about women, people of color, the Lgbtqia+ community and other underrepresented groups. Producer Mary Jane Skalski will serve as senior advisor to The Population.
The Population will also premiere the film “I Carry You With Me (Te Llevo Conmigo)” by director Heidi Ewing at this year’s Sundance Film Festival and is in post-production on Josef Kubota Wladyka’s “Catch the Fair One.” The Population also has several other projects in development including a feminist horror film based on a true survival story in Mexico and a true-crime series set among the Asian American and working-class communities in Detroit.

When the Cure played their 1989 album, Disintegration, in its entirety earlier this year at the Sydney Opera House, the whole experience was “weird” by frontman Robert Smith’s estimation. The album is the band’s best-selling release — it’s certified double platinum in the U.S. and made it up to Number 12 on the Billboard 200 — and he’s well aware of what it means to his fans and the music world at large. Singles like “Lovesong,” “Fascination Street,” “Pictures of You,” and “Lullaby” have become set-list staples for the band for a reason.

The Cure marked their 40th anniversary in 2018 with a pair of unique shows in London: One where they went through their catalogue chronologically for a small audience of die-hards, and another where they played a lengthy, career-spanning set to a massive crowd in Hyde Park. Both concerts were filmed and will be released this fall as 40 Live – Curætion-25 + Anniversary, a box set that will come in a variety of configurations.

Robert Smith wasn’t ready for the full 4K experience when he sat down to watch a concert film of the Cure’s stunning 2018 Hyde Park concert. “The first close-up of a human face I saw was me,” he says. “It was quite terrifying.”
The recent Rock and Roll Hall of Fame inductee says he was initially on the fence about making the film, which is titled Anniversary 1978-2018 Live in Hyde Park London and will get a special screening in movie theaters around the world on Thursday, July 11th.

Seven new musical legends joined the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in Brooklyn on March 29: The Cure, Def Leppard, Janet Jackson, Stevie Nicks, Radiohead, Roxy Music and The Zombies. That recorded 2019 ceremony is now airing on HBO tonight (April 27) and will continue to be available on the premium network’s on-demand listings for months to come.
Five of those artists performed at the event, but not Janet Jackson and Radiohead. She was reportedly upset over HBO airing “Leaving Neverland,” a hard-hitting documentary about her brother Michael Jackson, and backed out of singing that week (although she was there to accept the induction trophy). Several Radiohead members had indicated their apathy for the selection, so Ed O’Brien and Philip Selway were the only ones attending. Other recent inductees who refused to perform: Dire Straits (2018), N.W.A. (2016), Kiss (2014), Guns N’ Roses (2012), Genesis (2010), Abba (2010) and Madonna (2008).

The Cure took the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame induction ceremony stage as they always have: with searing riffs cutting through the smoke. The stage was dark when the band kicked things off with The Top’s hard-hitting “Shake Dog Shake”; the band members’ silhouettes dancing behind them.
Then the angular array of lights turned green, and an eerie keyboard part signaled the start of “A Forest,” off their Seventeen Seconds album from 1980. Negative black and white footage of a woods scene played behind the group as Smith’s guitar wooshed to the beat.

Since forming more than four decades ago, the Cure’s personal lyrics, dreamlike compositions and gothy image helped them establish a dedicated, cult-like fanbase. Despite these clear contributions to rock — not to mention gold and platinum records on both side of the Atlantic and megahits like “Lovesong” and “The Love Cats” — it’s taken 15 years and one failed bid in 2012 for the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame to recognize them with an induction.

At this point, it might be quicker to tell you who isn’t in “Room 104” this year. HBO released the first look at Season 2 of its acclaimed anthology series (read Ben Travers’ Season 1 review here), and Mahershala Ali will make an appearance in an episode (in advance of the upcoming newest installment of “True Detective”), as will Michael Shannon, Brian Tyree Henry, Judy Greer, Natalie Morales, Charlyne Yi, and Rainn Wilson.
As with Season 1, this new batch of episodes also features an impressive list of people behind the camera. Season 2 will feature Josephine Decker’s first post-“Madeline’s Madeline” directorial effort, as well as episodes directed by Morales, “Lovesong” director So Young Kim, and “Creep” director Patrick Brice.
Series creator Jay and Mark Duplass are back as executive producers, with the latter returning as both writer and director in Season 2.

So Yong Kim has come on board to direct the independent drama “The Pecan Man,” based on the novel by Cassie Dandridge Selleck, Variety has learned exclusively.
Claude Dal Farra, Brice Dal Farra, and Brian Keady of Bcdf Pictures are the producers. Joseph Muszynski adapted the book and is an executive producer.
Described as “To Kill a Mockingbird” meets “The Help,” “The Pecan Man” tells the story of a small 1970s southern town after a homeless black man is hastily charged with the fatal stabbing of the police chief’s son. A white widow and her black housekeeper struggle with what they know of the crime as the tragedy creeps into their lives.

As 2017 winds down, like most cinephiles, we’re looking to get our hands on the titles that may have slipped under the radar or simply gone unseen. With the proliferation of streaming options, it’s thankfully easier than ever to play catch-up, and to assist with the process, we’re bringing you a rundown of the best titles of the year available to watch.
Curated from the Best Films of 2017 So Far list we published for the first half of the year, it also includes films we’ve enjoyed the past few months and some we’ve recently caught up on. This is far from a be-all, end-all year-end feature (that will come at the end of the year), but rather something that will hopefully be a helpful tool for readers to have a chance to seek out notable, perhaps underseen, titles from the year.
Note that we’re going by U.

In last week’s episode of “Room 104,” the inventive TV experiment from the Duplass brothers, two baby-faced Mormon missionaries ask “Heavenly Father” for a sign when their faith begins to flag. Feeling discouraged by their failure to persuade a single convert, Noah (Adam Foster) has recently tried coffee, and Joseph (Nat Wolff) zealously guides him back to the light. When they ask for a sign and the TV magically turns on so-called “pornography,” Joseph flip-flops and proposes breaking all the rules as a way to strengthen their faith. When Joseph returns with a six-pack of beer, they throw the tamest all nighter any hotel has ever seen, which to them is incredibly wild and thrilling. Through passing glances and hidden hard-ons, it soon becomes clear they’d like to switch teams in more ways than one.

With a seemingly endless amount of streaming options — not only the titles at our disposal, but services themselves — we’ve taken it upon ourselves to highlight the titles that have recently hit platforms. Every week, one will be able to see the cream of the crop (or perhaps some simply interesting picks) of streaming titles (new and old) across platforms such as Netflix, iTunes, Amazon, and more (note: U.S. only). Check out our rundown for this week’s selections below.

Harold Ramis certainly didn’t invent it, but his Groundhog Day made the narrative loop device a mainstream mainstay, lovingly aped in everything from Source Code to Edge of Tomorrow to 50 First Dates. In Before I Fall, the loop treatment is utilized rather intelligently by director Ry Russo-Young, from Maria Maggenti screenplay adapted from Lauren Oliver‘s novel. – Dan M. (full review)

Lovesong screens Wednesday, Mar. 29 at 7:00pm at the .Zack (3224 Locust St., St. Louis, Mo 63103) as part of this year’s QFest St. Louis. This is a Free screening.
Lovesong which opens QFest this year is an almost perfect little love story. Following Sarah (Riley Keough) and Mindy (Jena Malone) as they go on a road trip with Sarah’s young daughter. The film then jumps ahead three years to Mindy’s wedding. The women’s budding relationship is cataloged throughout the film.
Lovesong’s emotional palette resembles that of the euphoric last act of Best Picture winner Moonlight feeling at once calming in its emotionality but also intensely charged with passion. Each glance hits you like a freight train. Each touch holds a connotation of intense longing. Each word feels joyous, yet crushing. Lovesong is a film that plays with the similar emotions of unrequited...

A24’s drama – and the distributor itself – enjoyed a huge Saturday afternoon at Film Independent’s 32nd annual Spirit Awards ceremony on the beach in Santa Monica.
Best feature winner Moonlight won six awards and took the plaudits on an afternoon that also sends best director winner Barry Jenkins to Sunday’s Oscars in high spirits and recognised Friday night’s César winner Isabelle Huppert for Elle and Casey Affleck for Manchester By The Sea in the lead acting categories.
Besides best feature and director, Moonlight won screenplay for Barry Jenkins and Tarell Alvin McCraney, cinematography for James Laxton, and editing for Joi McMillon and Nat Sanders.
The film started the ceremony as joint frontrunner with American Honey on six nominations and converted all six, including the previously announced Robert Altman Award. American Honey went away empty-handed.

The Independent Spirit Awards may not garner the same attention as the Oscars, but they offer a much broader survey of the previous year in film. There are some overlaps in major categories — the lauded trifecta of “Moonlight,” “La La Land” and “Manchester By the Sea” remains in place. However, there are also a number of other 2016 highlights, from “American Honey” to “Swiss Army Man,” that won’t make it to the Academy Awards. That gives us one last chance to cast a wider net. Per tradition, we reached out to our community of critics and journalists from publications around the country to ask them two questions for every category: Who will on Saturday — and who should?

Sundance 2017 may have already wrapped up, but some of the highlights from last year’s festival are still, slowly, making their way to theaters across the country. Sure, Oscar may be on everyone’s mind, and cinephiles are either catching up with nominees that are finally making the rounds or anxiously awaiting those films we’ll be talking about one full year from now, but there are a cavalcade of new releases that, sadly, went underrated during their festival runs.
One such film is the newest feature from Treeless Mountain director So Yong Kim. Entitled Lovesong, Kim’s picture is now making its theatrical debut in New York, with a rollout imminent.
The film stars Riley Keough as a mother of one and a wife to a husband who is less than present. We watch as she tends to her energetic youngster and yet slowly become less and less sure...

A successful Oscar season is wrapping up, as multiple contenders from the specialty world continuing their long runs. Last out of the gate is Documentary Feature contender “I Am Not Your Negro” (Magnolia) which is rapidly expanding far beyond most similar nominees in an era when most documentaries do not play outside their Oscar-qualifying theatrical runs.
Among limited films, the new releases are mainly niche items without high expectations, and will add little in upcoming weeks. However, strong new Los Angeles dates on the second week of cat documentary “Kedi” (Oscilloscope) showed that its big New York opening was no fluke.

There’s a rodeo that takes place early in “Lovesong,” the latest feature from director So Yong Kim (“In Between Days”). There’s also a years-long dance of unrealized love between two young women. But this is no lesbian “Brokeback Mountain.” The former detail is mostly incidental, and the love story — more pronounced longing than announced intent — is the quietly heartbreaking sort, depicted as more of a wishful dream than anything else. Of course, all of this suits Kim’s delicate objectives perfectly, and if there’s a cinematic cousin to this sensitive, sorrowful film, it’s “Moonlight.” Sarah (Riley Keough) is a young.

A 25 New Face from 2006, So Yong Kim’s Lovesong premiered at the Sundance Film Festival in 2016 and opens today in New York from Strand Releasing. The below interview was originally published during the film’s Sundance premiere. While continuing to make subtle, emotional, character-based stories, So Yong Kim’s cinema has been one of change and evolution. Her debut feature, 2006’s In Between Days, spent several days surveying the burgeoning first love of two Korean teenagers living in Toronto. Largely filmed in Korean, and shot on a micro budget with non actors, the film landed Kim on our 25 New […]...

First, there was that inexplicable half-hour climax in “Transformers: Age of Extinction,” which exported the entire cast to Beijing. Now, Matt Damon’s battling mystical forces in medieval China. Hollywood and China’s terminally awkward shotgun wedding continues with “The Great Wall,” a clunky, effects-riddled blockbuster in which a humorless Damon joins forces with major Chinese director Zhang Yimou for a project that suits neither of their talents. There’s little need for good performances or filmmaking when every scene has been calculated to serve the bottom line.
Assailed in the West for presenting a white savior at the center of an Asian cast, the movie’s racial violations aren’t as egregious as some early critics claimed. Instead, the bland story finds Damon and two other white actors surrounded by a largely Asian cast in a Chinese-approved adventure (where it’s already generating strong, though not blockbuster, box office...

Volker Schlöndorff’s “Return to Montauk” speaks from both sides of its mouth telling two very different tales. Hear it one way, and you’ll get a story of time and regret, an august Euro-drama that asks if love lost can ever be found anew. But come a bit closer, listen past the din, and you’ll hear something entirely different. This time the film is not asking any questions, but flat out saying: Self-delusion is a powerful weapon, and its greatest victims are often those who dare to wield it.
The film’s opening scene offers a helpful key to unlock what then follows. In one long, unbroken take, a man stares right into the camera and tells a story. He speaks of philosophy and of his father, and says that on the older man’s deathbed, he told his son that there are two kinds of regret – regret...

The smartest choice that filmmaker So Yong Kim made when crafting “Lovesong,” an intimate exploration of the fluid nature of friendship, identity and sexual attraction, comes from the cast. Toplined by Jena Malone and Riley Keough, “Lovesong” leans heavily on the pair’s chemistry and ability to carry a slow-simmering storyline, but even their contributions can only carry the thinly-plotted film so far. While “Lovesong” fails to coalesce, Malone and Keough emerge with two of their best performances yet, bolstered by an on-screen bond that deserves far richer material that what is offered up here.
