The term “scream queen” gets thrown around a lot, even applied to actors who have only done a handful of horror films. But if any young performer deserves the title, it’s Samara Weaving. Not only does she star in the very gruesome post-apocalyptic horror-action movie Azrael, directed by E.L. Katz (Cheap Thrills) and written by Simon Barrett (The Guest), which just premiered at SXSW 2024, but she’s been in The Babysitter, Scream VI, and Ready or Not, among others. In fact, when we ask Weaving at the festival whether she likes being referred to as a “scream queen,” she answers quickly, “Yeah, why not? ‘Scream Queen’ is great. I’ll take it!”
For Weaving, the appeal of horror movies goes beyond the guts and gore most often associated with the genre. “It’s such a good vehicle to explore so many things,” she tells Den of Geek. “For [Azrael], it...

Samara Weaving has earned modern scream queen status with roles in films like The Babysitter, The Babysitter: Killer Queen, Mayhem, Ready or Not, Scream VI, and the upcoming horror action movie Azrael, plus a few episodes of the Ash vs. Evil Dead TV series. Since Weaving has worked in both the Scream and Evil Dead franchises, she was asked during a new interview with Collider which horror franchise she would like to be a part of next. Her answer: Nightmare on Elm Street.
The filmmakers behind Azrael had originally wanted to cast Billie Eilish in the role Weaving ended up playing. So when she was asked the horror franchise question, she said, “Nightmare on Elm Street. I can do it. Unless Billie Eilish gets it now.“

A fan favorite here in the horror world, Samara Weaving has made her mark on the genre with films including Mayhem, The Babysitter and Ready or Not, and she’s also appeared in two iconic horror franchises to date with roles in both “Ash vs. Evil Dead” and Scream VI.
What franchise would Samara Weaving like to appear in next? It’s a question Collider asked the actress at SXSW over the weekend. Her answer? A Nightmare on Elm Street!

Wes Craven’s original horror classic celebrates its 40th anniversary here in 2024, though it’s another anniversary that’s at the forefront of our mind right now. It’s now been Fourteen Years since the most recent Nightmare on Elm Street movie, that being the remake in 2010.

David Carson's 1994 film "Star Trek: Generations" has a farfetched premise, even by Trek's own outlandish standards. It seems there is a mysterious energy ribbon called the Nexus that periodically floats through the galaxy. The Nexus destroys any starships it encounters but also sweeps living beings into its own mysterious pocket dimension. The Nexus' pocket dimension is essentially Heaven, where its victims live out their happiest memories. Time also stands still in the Nexus, allowing its inhabitants to remain there eternally.
The physical existence of Heaven, one might think, would be a heady concept for a humanist franchise like "Star Trek." How would the universe react if Heaven was in a physical location one could visit? One might think there would be a mad dash to get there as soon as possible, rapidly depleting the galaxy's population.
Sadly, "Generations" sidesteps any interesting ideas in favor of a useless "pass the...

Founded in 2012, Paris-based WTFilms, run by Gregory Chambet and Dimitri Stephanides, has built a strong reputation as a sales agent for break-out genre pics and has recently diversified into production, to access hit projects. As competition ramps up for more ambitious projects with strong theatrical potential, Chambet decided to move to Los Angeles in mid-2023, while Stephanides remains based in Paris.
“At WTFilms, we aim to continue to work on both sides of the Atlantic,” explains Chambet. “In the current market it’s important to invest in projects by talented directors, with innovative concepts, budgeted above $5 million. It makes sense for me to be based here because we work a lot with partners here and L.A. is a key talent hub. We’re on the lookout for talent from all around the world. There are really exciting genre directors popping up everywhere – in North America and also in Latin America and Asia.

French kickboxing champ and action film star Nassim Lyes said he performed the majority of the stunts in his new action thriller, Mayhem, in his new uInterview.
In a conversation with uInterview founder Erik Meers, Lyes opened up about his experience on the set of Mayhem! as an actor with a real-life background in kickboxing. Lyes revealed that he did approximately 95% of his stunts in the movie, of which many were real.
Lyes stated that almost all of the body shots that took place in the film were real. However, Lyes confessed that he quickly regretted the decision to appeal to such authenticity, as his second fight in the movie was against a former Thai champion, whom Lyes was scared would break his ribs.
Despite his heavy involvement in the stunts, Lyes gave a shout-out to his body double, as his boxing background sometimes made it “hard to not hit for real.

For an action movie called “Mayhem!” and produced by the French outfit known as WTFilms, “Cold Skin” director Xavier Gens’ latest genre exercise starts off as a rather subdued affair that doesn’t seem all that eager to earn its title. An enjoyably hackneyed and machete-happy tale about an ex-con’s tragic first stab at a second chance, Gens’ Thailand-set foray into Gareth Evans territory is more than 40 minutes old before it borders on anything worthy of an exclamation point, and even by the time it’s over this slow-bruising riff on “The Raid” barely rises to the level of a low-key hullabaloo despite its promise of absolute pandemonium.
That isn’t necessarily a knockout blow against it. Inspired by his collaboration with Evans on “Gangs of London,” but aware that he lacks his colleague’s bone-crunching touch, Gens does his best to make the movie’s simple revenge porn...

Is there any style of filmmaking in which Xavier Gens cannot excel? His preference is obviously for genre work, making it less likely, even today, that he’ll ever achieve the recognition he deserves, but within that he is always alert to political and social issues, and he handles drama with as much assurance as action. The action in Mayhem is blistering, so impressively delivered that you might miss the storytelling it’s doing at the same time.
At Eye For Film, we’re not big fans of the dead woman drives the plot subgenre, and as soon as you see the chemistry between ex-con Samir (Nassim Lyes) and his girlfriend Mia (Loryn Nounay), it’s clear that bad things are going to happen to her – yet though the plot is familiar, Gens gives it a very different quality. Plot: A model prisoner’s leave ends in tragedy when his past resurfaces, forcing him to flee. He starts over in Thailand, until a local criminal coerces him back into crime. After this man attacks his family, he vows revenge.
Review: Xavier Gens burst onto the horror scene with 2007’s Frontier(s) and I thought he’d be quite the name by this point. He followed that up with the often maligned Hitman and all but disappeared from US Cinemas. After finding success with Lupin, I’m hoping that Mayhem! serves as the beginning of a bit of a revival for Gens. Because despite its issues, there is a lot of potential here.
The story of Mayhem! follows Sam, a professional fighter whose whole life is turned upside down when he’s forced to flee the country. He ends up in Thailand and rebuilds his life but his past catches...

The original title for Xavier Gens’s Mayhem! was Farang, a word that describes the main character’s status in Thailand. A martial artist and ex-con, Sam (Nassim Lyes) is also a foreigner, and a Westerner at that, having fled his native France. The title change is understandable, meant to reach the broader audience that might take interest in the film’s bloody revenge story, though it risks setting the wrong expectations. After all, long stretches of Mayhem! pass with little in the way of actual mayhem, especially in its first hour.
The film, written by Gens and Magali Rossito, initially focuses on Sam’s daily life after he’s released on day parole and does an honest day’s work at a construction site. But trouble soon finds Sam, and after a brief chase and scuffle that leaves one man dead, Mayhem! essentially hits reset and jumps forward five years.

If you’re an adolescent humanoid arachnid martial artist – a hero in a half shell, some kind of Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtle – then few names will strike fear into your heart like Shredder. The leader of the Foot Clan is the biggest bad in the Ninja Turtles world – the Joker to their Batman, if you will. Which is why, when making this summer’s animated favourite :a[Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Mutant Mayhem]{href='https://www.empireonline.com/movies/reviews/teenage-mutant-ninja-turtles-mutant-mayhem/' target='_blank' rel='noreferrer noopener'}, director Jeff Rowe ultimately decided not to pitch his four young heroes against Shredder immediately. “Shredder used to be the main villain before we pivoted away from that,” he tells Empire, reasoning: “They saved Joker for :a[The Dark Knight]{href='https://www.empireonline.com/movies/reviews/dark-knight-review/' target='_blank' rel='noreferrer noopener'}.”

When you think of iconic action films of the past decade or so, “John Wick” and “The Raid: Redemption” are probably at the top of that list. Both, in their own ways, have forever altered how action films are made in the 21st century. So, needless to say, when you see a film like “Mayhem!” get compared to both of those films, you pay attention.

If you’d like to kick off the new year with some hard-hitting action, you probably can’t go wrong with Mayhem!, a new action thriller from director Xavier Gens (Gangs of London). IFC Films has released the first trailer for Mayhem!, which stars kickboxer-turned-actor Nassim Lyes as an ex-con battling his way through Thailand to avenge his wife and save his daughter.
Mayhem! premiered at Montreal’s Fantasia Film Festival earlier this year and earned rave reviews. If the movie is anything like the trailer, those raves were well deserved. In the vein of Taken and The Raid, the film features “jaw-dropping fight sequences and captivating camera movements, while transcending the traditional action genre with the story’s emotional core paired with artful cinematography.” I’ll admit that this one had slipped under my radar, but it’s definitely got my attention now.

Consider the career of one Joseph McGinty Nichol, better known by the nom de plume McG. This is a man whose directorial debut as a feature filmmaker in 2000 was the paradigm-shifting, zeitgeist-grabbing, new millennium bar-setter "Charlie's Angels." Sit with that for a moment. His next film? The extraordinary sequel "Full Throttle." Mind you these were gigs that star and producer Drew Barrymore personally sought out McG for based on the music videos he made for the band Sugar Ray. One of the more significant sliding doors moments in modern American history is the fact that McG was the original frontman for the band that would become Sugar Ray, before humbly realizing his talents lay elsewhere and convincing high school buddy Mark McGrath to take over.
McG helped launch and executive produce both "The Oc" and "Supernatural," he produced "Pussycat Dolls Present: The Search for the Next Doll" and "Pussycat Dolls Present: Girlicious,...

As beloved as The Muppets are, they can’t seem to catch a break on Disney+. It was reported today that The Muppets Mayhem has been canceled by the streaming service after one season.
Developed and written by The Goldbergs creator Adam F. Goldberg, Bill Barretta, and Jeff Yorkes, The Muppets Mayhem follows “The Electric Mayhem Band — Dr. Teeth on vocals and keyboards, Animal on drums, Floyd Pepper on vocals and bass, Janice on vocals and lead guitar, Zoot on saxophone and Lips on trumpet — on an epic, music-filled journey to record their first-ever studio album. With the help of a driven young music executive, Nora Singh (Lilly Singh), the old-school Muppet band comes face-to-face with the current-day music scene as they try to finally record their first studio album.“
Disney+ never revealed the ratings for The Muppets Mayhem, but it’s clear they weren’t quite what the studio had hoped.

Here is a wrap-up of all the news you need to know from Tuesday, November 21, 2023.
Netflix is delving back into the world of Black Mirror.
Months after the debut of its sixth season, reports have emerged that Netflix is already prepping Black Mirror Season 7.
With the speedier-than-usual renewal, there's a high chance we won't wait as long for fresh episodes.
The four-year wait between Seasons 5 and 6 was a lot.
Then again, maybe there will still be a significant delay because the series tends to attract big names due to the one-episode commitment afforded by its format.
Black Mirror has remained a success story for Netflix, reaching the Top 10 in countless countries.
The series started on Channel 4 but moved to Netflix in 2016 and has enjoyed a bigger budget and more cutting-edge stories than before.
We're unsure where the series will go next, but we'll be seated when new episodes pop into our Netflix queue.

The episode of Revisited covering Wrong Turn 2: Dead End was Written by Emilie Black, Edited by Juan Jimenez, Narrated by Niki Minter, Produced by Tyler Nichols and John Fallon, and Executive Produced by Berge Garabedian.
A long, long time ago, in a state deep in the woods, a bunch of people were eaten by cannibal hillbillies in a film called Wrong Turn. Soon, the locals to where the film was taking place got very angry about the depiction of their fellow mountain and wood residents, which they thought gave them a bad name. Horror fans responded by seeing the film anyways, making it a minor hit. The first film had a budget of $12.6 million and made $28.7 million at the box office. While this may lead to a sequel at times, it was not a given. Fast forward to 4 years later and we are gifted with the first of a long series of sequels.

‘Suitable Flesh’ – Barbara Crampton and Heather Graham on Gender-Flipped Lovecraft Roles [Interview]
Director Joe Lynch’s (Wrong Turn 2, Mayhem, “Creepshow”) new movie Suitable Flesh, based on H.P. Lovecraft’s The Thing On The Doorstep, is set to unleash body-hopping madness in theaters and VOD on October 27, 2023.
Heather Graham and producer Barbara Crampton star in Suitable Flesh, executive produced by Brian Yuzna (Re-Animator). Dennis Paoli, the writer of Re-Animator and From Beyond, wrote the script.
Joe Lynch and the late Stuart Gordon’s frequent collaborators seamlessly insert Suitable Flesh into Gordon’s Lovecraftian universe (our review) but give it a slight twist in gender-flipping archetypical Lovecraft roles. Bloody Disgusting spoke with Joe Lynch, Heather Graham, and Barbara Crampton out of Tribeca earlier this year, before the SAG-AFTRA strike, where they discussed how Lynch came to direct Suitable Flesh and taking on these rare roles.
It was Barbara Crampton, a producer on Suitable Flesh, who reached out to Joe Lynch about helming the new feature.

Suitable Flesh director Joe Lynch has the resilience one needs to be an indie genre director.
Lynch’s new horror film starring Heather Graham and Barbara Crampton is currently sporting his best reviews since his certified fresh action-horror film, Mayhem (2017). Suitable Flesh spiritually picks up where Crampton left off in the ‘80s, alongside director Stuart Gordon and screenwriter Dennis Paoli. Their H.P. Lovecraft adaptations, Re-Animator and From Beyond, have long been considered cult classics, and once Crampton proposed the idea of adapting Lovecraft’s The Thing on the Doorstep into Suitable Flesh, a project Gordon and Paoli had once developed, Lynch knew he had to pay tribute his heroes and their Miskatonic University-verse.
“The more I got ensconced in it, the more it felt like a natural extension of what these guys did before. It allowed me to respectfully take the baton from Stuart and run with it by tethering to this bigger world,...
