When a young boy disappears, his mother, a police chief, and his friends must confront terrifying forces in order to get him back.
John Carpenter's films are a touchstone for the series; for instance, the movie poster for The Thing (1982) appears in several scenes. Carpenter has also composed the scores for several of his films. The main theme is highly reminiscent of Carpenter's electronic scores.
During several of the nighttime searches, characters use flashlights with modern bulbs (identifiable by their blue-white color and visibly different from the yellow-orange hue of period-correct flashlights). Ironically, if they had all used modern bulbs, the error wouldn't be nearly so obvious.
The Stranger Things opening titles and fonts mimic the film grain and look of 1980's television series opening credits.
