Today, Jan. 1, isn’t just New Year’s Day — it’s also Public Domain Day, where thousands of cinematic treasures, literary classics, Great American Songbook selections, and works of art see their copyrights expire and enter the public domain.
The headliner this year is the fair use of Mickey Mouse — at least, the Steamboat Willie version of the beloved character — as that copyright expiration has been anticipated for years. However, there’s much more than just Mickey entering the public domain in 2024.

When walking out of James Gunn's 2014 film "Guardians of the Galaxy," the 10th film in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, this author heard several other audiences members talking about the film's post-credits stinger. In the epilogue, the vaguely villainous Collector (Benicio Del Toro) sat destitute among the ruins of his collection or rare cosmic antiquities. Only a few of his beloved baubles has survived a cosmic blast, including a dog from Earth. The dog, wearing a Soviet space suit, was clearly salvaged from the 1960s Russian space program wherein canines were sent up in rockets to test their safety. The dog in "Guardians" is not Laika, but a fictional dog named Cosmo. The Collector had been keeping it in a cage on a distant planet for decades.
As Cosmo gives the Collector a sympathetic lick, a voice from off-screen (Seth Green) immediately points out how gross the dog is. A...

How do you translate a story about inertia to the screen? And how do you do that when the source material belongs to one of English literature’s most astute chroniclers of the human psyche, in all its intricate mystery? In the case of The Beast in the Jungle, “freely adapted” from Henry James’ 1903 novella of the same name, Austrian filmmaker Patric Chiha has taken a bold creative leap. To tell the story of May Bertram and John Marcher, acquaintances who become soulmates in a strange waiting game, he moves the drama from the rarefied realm of high society to a nightclub in 20th century Paris. The action, to use the term loosely, takes place over 25 years. And it feels like it.
The problem with this version of May and John’s story, scripted by Chiha, Axelle Ropert and Jihane Chouaib, and filmed in Brussels and Vienna, isn’t the...

The "Magic Mike" movies are ostensibly about men, or at the very least about one man (Channing Tatum's titular "Magic" Mike), but the women of the franchise have an important role, too. Mike has had his romantic interests through each film, like Cody Horn's Brooke in "Magic Mike," Amber Heard's Zoe in "Magic Mike Xxl," and now Salma Hayek Pinault in "Magic Mike's Last Dance," but the second movie also has two brilliant, beautiful bisexual women who have carved out positions of power in the world of male stripping: Jada Pinkett Smith's Rome and Elizabeth Banks' Paris. Rome and Paris, besides sharing place-based names, also share some kind of romantic or sexual past together, and they're the kind of women that make fems everywhere want to scream "#Goals!".
I've already written at length about how "Magic Mike Xxl" is a masterpiece that addresses desire and women's needs,...

Even before we saw one beautiful frame of black and white footage, David Fincher’s “Mank” was already getting incredible hype and buzz as a sure-thing awards contender and one of the most anticipated films of 2020. And if you believe the reviews, it would seem as if people were guessing correctly, as “Mank” is possibly the biggest favorite to land heaps of awards this season. A large part of that buzz seems to rest on the fact that David Fincher is the man behind the camera.

An intriguing Twilight Zone premise gives way to a deadly mystery in Nathaniel Atcheson's fascinating new sci-fi indie, Domain, which just had its world premier at the Austin Other Worlds Film Festival. In the film, more than half a million survivors of a deadly virus have moved underground into isolated, self-regulating bunkers. We're told through a corporate video (hosted by the inimitable Beth Grant, Donnie Darko), that individuals are isolated in order to ensure the the virus won't be able to spread through the remaining population. Communication between survivors is only possible through a two-way video interface called "Domain", and only pods of seven people are able to communicate as a group - this being deemed the optimum number of community participants. As the film begins, we...

Sealed inside self-contained bunkers, they are humanity's only hope, but the final flickering flame of civilization could be snuffed out for good when Earth's last survivors start vanishing in the new sci-fi thriller Domain. Ahead of the film's world premiere at the Other Worlds Austin Sci-Fi Film Festival this Sunday, a new clip teases a disturbing disappearance.
Synopsis: "After a deadly virus wipes out most of humanity, the survivors are forced to wait alone in self-sustaining bunkers while the viral threat runs its course. Able to communicate through a networked video interface, the survivors wait for years and slowly become a motley family of sorts. But their fragile social ecosystem is shattered when, one by one, they start mysteriously disappearing from their bunkers."
Written and directed by Nathaniel Atcheson, Domain stars Britt Lower, Ryan Merriman, Sonja Sohn, Beth Grant, William Gregory Lee, Kevin Sizemore, Nick Gomez, and Cedric Sanders.

Tagline: "No Exit.' Sci-fi news and review site QuietEarth.us has posted a trailer for Nathaniel Atcheson's Domain. The film is a blend of sci-fi and horror as a virus forces survivors below ground. Except, in a series of bunkers, something even more sinister has been released amongst the inhabitants. Domain is set for a showing at Other Worlds Austin, in early December. As well, an official trailer for the film has been released and film fans can find it here. For more on the story, a virus has wiped out much of humanity. Survivors wait, alone, below ground, in a series of bunkers. The inhabitants communicate through a video intercom-like system. But soon, people begin to crack under the pressure of isolation. The film is slightly reminiscent of others. Though, the tone of Domain is darker than most. Matt Osterman's slightly average 400 Days (2015) dealt with a...
