Allied soldiers from Belgium, the British Empire and France are surrounded by the German Army, and evacuated during a fierce battle in World War II.
The film was criticized for not showing Indian soldiers. Four contingents of Indian soldiers fought at Dunkirk, even though Mohandas K. Gandhi had ordered all Indian people not to support the British war effort in September 1939.

When the Spitfire was burning, the engine cowling had burnt away but there was no engine. In one of the last scenes, the propeller was suspended by a pole that came out the engine bay, where the engine's output shaft should have been.
There are no opening credits, except for the film's title.
