In the many movies, TV shows and documentaries that peer into Black America, Hollywood often leans heavy on how African Americans used music to communicate and push through decades of highs and lows in the country they call home.
But Black people love to laugh, too! Laughter is a thread that runs just as deep as music in the tapestry of the Black American cultural experience, and now a 10-part docuseries on Vice TV continues to look at that phenomenon and how it resonates with Black Comedy in America.
The third episode of the series hosted by comedians Tiffany Haddish, Chris Spencer and Ryan Davis, which aired Tuesday night, looks at the impact of classic Black ‘70s sitcoms such as The Jeffersons, Good Times, Sanford and Son and Different Strokes, among others. Janelle Monáe briefly pauses a Zoom interview with The Hollywood Reporter to get up out of a chair and allow the camera to capture a better view of an essential piece of her ensemble — a black T-shirt featuring her face and text that reads “Monáe Manor: From the Mad Mind of Janelle Monáe.”
The merch promotes a new activation at Los Angeles Haunted Hayride, a spooky maze on the grounds of Griffith Park where the 10-time Grammy Award-nominee has been spotted in recent weeks making killer cameos alongside the Hayride’s resident “scare actors,” sometimes with a chainsaw in hand. It’s just one piece of the Halloween pie that Monáe has added to her schedule in 2024 as she continues her ascent as the newest “HalloQueen” in town. And it’s all a dream come true for the native Kansan.

Los Angeles Haunted Hayride — the sprawling attraction that packs a spooky patch of Griffith Park with ghouls, goblins and eerie attractions — has never closed for a private party. Not for the Obamas, the Beckhams, Christina Aguilera or any of the VIPs that have flocked to the pop-up during the Halloween season in its 16 years of existence. That changed on Oct. 10, when the public exited the area known as Midnight Falls to make way for host Janelle Monáe and nearly 100 of her nearest and dearest.
As zombie-like “scare actors” bobbed and booed their way through a crowd of her guests including Zola filmmaker Janicza Bravo and Insecure star Kendrick Sampson, a DJ in a skull mask pressed pause on Rockwell’s “Somebody’s Watching Me” to make way for Monáe’s grand — and completely method — entrance, as she cut through the fog with a chainsaw and sprinted toward the stage. For a show called “How to Die Alone,” Natasha Rothwell’s Onyx Collective series is incredibly heartwarming. The show’s mix of humor, candor and self-reflection is what felt true to Rothwell, who admitted she didn’t want to “pull any punches” as she tapped into her own journey of self-love to create her first show.
“I sat with what scares me the most, and, at the time, it was dying alone … but after 20 plus years of therapy, I realized it’s not dying alone that is the scary part, it’s the dying lonely,” Rothwell said of the series she created, co-showruns and stars in for TheWrap’s latest digital cover story. “I can’t control whether or not I die physically alone … but I can control whether or not I die lonely.”

"How to Die Alone" sounds like a fear-mongering headline in a women's magazine listing the do's and don'ts of dating or fashion, a way to scare women into behaving or looking a certain way to not end up like a "childless cat lady" or some other misogynistic descriptor lobbied by insecure weirdos. The fear of dying alone is not exclusive to women, but American society certainly treats single women as moral failures. It's why magazines used to produce lists of "eligible bachelors" while women age into "spinsters." In Natasha Rothwell's brilliant new comedy, "How To Die Alone" isn't just the title of the show, but a jarring wake-up call for Mel who has a near-death experience while alone on her 35th birthday (the same day she's invited to her ex-boyfriend and current manager's wedding) that puts her in the hospital and face-to-face with the woman in the bed next...

Maybe Empire wasn’t so bad after all?
A few weeks after Lee Daniels slammed his time on the hit Fox series — “Horrible. Absolutely the worst experience. Horrible!” he told The Film Stage — the show’s co-creator has walked back those comments by claiming “that’s not true” when asked if he ever said it in the first place.
During an appearance on SiriusXM’s Andy Cohen Live to promote his Netflix film The Deliverance, Daniels was asked about his sharp-tongued comments, which made headlines in early September. “I read that you called Empire the worst experience. Is that true?” host Andy Cohen asked.
“That’s so not true,” Daniels replied in curious turn of events considering the article is published as a Q&a format with no corrections or clarifications. “What I meant was the worst experience because all of my films have been independently financed, it was the...

Natasha Rothwell has no fear of flying. With stamps on her passport from Turkey to Tokyo, the actress is completely at ease with the wheels up. She gets to the airport well ahead of takeoff (“being early is on time,” she says). On board, she loves a window seat and daydreams while gazing at the clouds. But she knows not all Black passengers feel as comfortable, due to persistent racial bias that’s a holdover from the Jim Crow era. So, wherever she lands, she goes out of her way...

“The Chosen” creator Dallas Jenkins has launched 5&2 Studios and has unveiled a slate of projects in the works — including an animated series, an unscripted show with Bear Grylls and a multi-season take on the story of Moses.
According to 5&2 Studios’ mission statement, the indie studio plans to “produce Bible-inspired stories through uniquely human and authentic storytelling and audience engagement.” Jenkins was set to announce the new studio and his upcoming programming plans — as well as the roll out of the final two seasons of “The Chosen” — during this weekend’s “ChosenCon” in Orlando, Fla. That two-day gathering of fans features cast members and producers behind the series, which began as a crowdfunded indie short in 2017 but since has become a global smash.
Earlier this year, an arbitrator ended the relationship between Jenkins’ The Chosen LLC and former partner Angel Studios, giving Jenkins oversight of “The Chosen” as he now builds out 5&2 Studios.

The most recent Netflix data dump showed that titles licensed from HBO aren’t exactly topping the charts anymore.
Netflix has begun doing something truly unique in the streaming world: releasing viewership data for all of its shows every six months. The most recent data dump covering the first half of 2024 was unveiled by Netflix on Thursday, and embedded in the list of thousands of titles available on the streamer was a bit of disappointing news for HBO and its parent company. Warner Bros. Discovery entered into a licensing agreement with Netflix in 2023, sending it shows that had been exclusively available on Max, such as the Issa Rae comedy “Insecure,” the black comedy “Six Feet Under,” “Ballers” starring Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson, and more. Those shows started strong on Netflix, but the most recent viewership dump shows that they have trailed off considerably, and even new arrivals like “Sex and the City...

Issa Rae says she’s continuing to work on building her own studio or a method of controlling distribution for her shows amid a lack of work in Hollywood and difficulty getting the green light for her projects..
Speaking at the Fast Company Innovation Festival in Manhattan Thursday, the Insecure star and creator noted that despite her success, several shows she has produced, including Rap Shit, Sweet Life and A Black Lady Sketch Show, have been canceled. The current landscape is very challenging, Rae said, adding that she believes the industry is also waiting on results of the U.S. presidential election.
“The market has changed a lot, and we’re all susceptible to it. There’s no one that’s not affected by it,” Rae said. “And a lot of the conversations even about this movie that we shot in LA is just how nothing is shooting in LA right now.

Netflix’s original shows and movies typically dominate the streamer’s most-viewed content rankings. But it still serves up hundreds of millions of hours of content licensed from third parties, as shown by Netflix’s massive data dump for viewing covering the first half of 2024.
Not surprisingly, kids content continues to fare well — extremely well. No. 1 on the TV side is perennial preschool favorite “CoComelon,” from Moonbug Entertainment, which pulled in 124.5 million views in aggregate. And that doesn’t include the two seasons of “CoComelon Lane” (34.4 million), which is a Netflix original produced by Moonbug. In addition, Moonbug’s “Little Angel” series garnered 52.4 million views over its five volumes.
Following “CoComelon” was another children’s TV staple: British animated show “Peppa Pig,” with 117.4 million views over six seasons. “Young Sheldon,” the spinoff the “The Big Bang Theory” that just ended its run on CBS last spring, came in strong with...

The new horror and science fiction anthology, “Deepest, Darkest,” has added yet another cast mate to its already stellar lineup of genre heavyweights.

Kohli joins the previously announced cast of Smith (“Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3”), Rosario Dawson, Ernie Hudson (“Ghostbusters”), Yetide Badaki (“American Gods”), Phil Lamarr and “Quantum Leap” stars Raymond Lee and Caitlin Bassett.

When Natasha Rothwell was writing and co-starring on HBO’s dramedy Insecure, she told Vulture’s Kenneth Arthur, “we’re elevating the ordinary to extraordinary by showing a slice of life that is not often told. I think a lot of times black women are expected to be certain things, so we don’t have the opportunity often just to be regular or to be not that inspiring or being sort of not good at a lot, not embodying black girl magic all the time.” Rothwell played Kelli, whose hilariously ungovernable moments out with her friends — “Remember me different” is just one of the many Kelli lines that entered pop culture history — belied the fact that she actually had it together at work. A successful accountant, Kelli is the reason the show’s protagonist, Issa (series creator Issa Rae), manages to rebuild her credit and life; presumably none of her...

As Natasha Rothwell books her return to The White Lotus for Season 3, she’s on a whole different journey this time around.
The How to Die Alone star explained how her 2021 role on Mike White‘s HBO anthology series helped pave the way for her new comedy series, which she also created, premiering Friday on Hulu.
“Well, my true north was authenticity. We are nuanced, complicated people, and I wanted the character to experience and express the full range of emotion because that’s life,” she explained to The A.V. Club.
“To try to categorize it is so Hollywood. I’ve been a victim of that because before it was just like, ‘She’s Kelly from Insecure, she can’t be serious.’ And then I played Belinda in The White Lotus and everyone’s like, ‘She can be serious,'” added Rothwell. “We can do it all; we have the capacity.

When Natasha Rothwell set out to create her first TV series, she had no idea the corner she was writing herself into by setting it at JFK. How to Die Alone premieres on Sept. 13, exclusively on Hulu. The new comedy stars Natasha Rothwell and, from what we’ve seen, is a series that will pull at our heartstrings, inspire, and make us laugh out loud. Will all episodes drop on premiere day or are we looking at a weekly release here? Show Snob is here to help so you don’t miss out.
I know what you’re thinking, “with such a depressing title like How to Die Alone, how is this a comedy?” Valid concern. Though the series won’t pull back any punches when touching on hard-hitting topics, none of it is for meaningless shock. There’s a lesson (or two) to be learned and you can count on these moments to be followed with laughs – and isn’t laughter something we can all use these days?

Despite a strong cast led by White Lotus and Insecure star Natasha Rothwell (who also serves as How to Die‘s creator/writer), the series’ first four episodes on which this review is based are, to be blunt, a downer.
Multi-hyphenate Rothwell portrays Mel, an overweight, thirtysomething Black woman with a low-paying job as a “cart associate” (aka cart driver) at JFK Airport. She is estranged from her family, in debt and...

Who Tf Did I Marry? is coming to a TV station near you.
Actor, writer, and producer Natasha Rothwell is helming an adaptation of the viral TikTok series, which racked up 400 million views over the month following its Valentine’s Day release. Creator Reesa Teesa (real name Tareasa Johnson) used more than 50 TikToks to tell the story of her manipulative ex-husband, to whom she gave the nickname Legion. Johnson’s tale struck a chord, especially with the older TikTok users who are sometimes overlooked amid the scramble for Gen Z engagement.
Rothwell, who readers may recognize from her appearances in shows like Insecure and The White Lotus, is betting that Who Tf Did I Marry? will connect with its target audience on TV screens. After what Variety described as a “competitive bidding war,” the adaptation got the green light from ABC Signature, which had previously signed an overall deal with Rothwell’s Big Hattie Productions.

The Academy Award nominee said that Smollett “was a son” to him after working together on his hit Fox series Empire, which ran for six seasons from 2015 to 2020, and Daniels would “work with him again.”

He added, “I was so busy, worried about Cookie’s hat and the music that we were playing [on Empire], this was before Insecure, this was before Black Panther. We started it. I was so worried about getting everything right that I didn’t know what was happening in the zeitgeist.”

I have a deep yearning for uniting people. I believe that one of my purposes in this life is to bring people together in a way that transcends status, class, and occupation, creating a space where everyone feels truly united and understood. That's why in 2022, I decided to launch my first El Teteo party in Los Angeles, driven by a longing for something that reminded me of my home in NYC.
I was feeling homesick and needed to feel connected to my roots and my community. El Teteo serves as an extension of what I was taught: to find moments of joy through pain, troubles, and hard work. For me, community is about gathering with the people you love and care for, no matter where you are - whether that's getting together with beach chairs in front of a building or plastic chairs at a park under a bridge. Teteo,...

HBO and Max Multicultural Marketing Chief Jackie Gagne has departed from her role at the company after four years, having worked for the brands in some capacity for more than 13 years. The company said the Multicultural Marketing team will “remain intact” under the supervision of Max and HBO originals executive vice president Pia Barlow.
The originals team was already “closely connected” and there will be “no disruption” to the department’s ongoing work following Gagne’s exit, according to HBO and Max.
“It has been a privilege to lead and work alongside a collective of wildly smart, thoughtful, and innovative colleagues,” Gagne, who served as senior vice president of multicultural marketing, said in a statement. “HBO has long stood for prestige and can’t-miss cultural moments, so being able to oversee campaigns that reach, embrace, and uplift so many audiences, while celebrating those stories, has been a true career highlight.
