  • A good liitle horror movie and quite creepy in parts. The strongest feature though, is the bit of quality delivered in the brooding soundtrack. Nice watch and well put-across.
  • Found footage with a twist and what's the twist? That it's actually quite good.

Ever since The Blair Witch Project (1999) we've been awash with found footage movies. Primarily because they are cheap to make and this one as well was made on a budget of less than 10k.

Sadly they are almost always terrible, the low budget generally means that nothing happens and for the most part this is no different.

What Rorschach does differently is the tension, the creators knew what they were doing. They have created a well constucted genuinely creepy movie despite the lack of budget or the fact it's devoid of originality.

If you don't like the genre you won't like this, but if you have any faith left in found footage this little gem is worth your time and I'd happily watch a sequel.

    The Good:

    Very well made

    Believable

    Tension is built perfectly

    The Bad:

    No originality at all

Still just a cliched found footage film

Things I Learnt From This Movie:

This sub genre still has life in it
  • Figured I'd write one more review since there are only 2 so far. :-)

For a micro-budget movie, this is pretty good. All the acting is very natural; it really does feel like we're watching real people going through some actual creepy experiences. The way they handle things isn't strained or contrived. Each person has their own personality and each of them seems like someone I might encounter in real life. The minimal budget means there are no eye-popping effects (or other standard movie fare such as chase scenes or bloody violence), but it doesn't hurt the sense of immersion into the paranormal, thanks to the smart choice made by the movie makers to focus (a la "Blair Witch Project") mostly on the people and their emotions rather than the spookies.

Ultimately, I can't rate this as a great movie, but I can say that if you like creepy movies and you're in the mood for a cheap one set in modern suburbia, this one should entertain you.
  • This movie started off with a nice pace. It wasn't too quick or too slow. It was interesting enough to captivate me. The pace around the middle part of the movie started to drag a little. It was never boring or I felt like I needed to switch it off, I just wished something more was happening. However, as the film starts to come to an end, it gets quite scary actually. Which is nice to see a horror have a slow build up and an actual scary final part. I was afraid walking around my house after this as the film feels very realistic. So I give it 7 stars for the great first and last act but the middle can sometimes feel a little slow.
  • At first, I was skeptical. I expected lame affects, cheap scares, and a run-of the mill story. I expected it to be poorly acted and boring... well...

Really, I'm giving props to this movie because it wants to be more realistic than to scare you, and that there's no real bullshit. I definitely wouldn't recommend this film for everyone, simply because it doesn't start to be scary until the last bit (of which I won't spoil). I don't watch many horror movies because of the jump scares and other such cheap manipulations - and I think that the found footage horror is all very dried out - this movie, for what it was (a no-budg youtube horror) wasn't stupid. They conveyed realism and the characters are likable, even. Believable. It felt like I was watching a doc made by two grad students with minimal filmmaking skills.

I feel like the two male leads are believable as skeptics and the mother believable as the victim of a haunting.

It's not a great movie - really, it's nothing too new - I, a terrible horror-movie watcher - was bored and comfortable throughout much of the film, but I'm personally, honestly okay with that. The payoff was good, and there's an actual emotional arc that the viewer has with the characters. For all the stupid things that happens in the big budges, I couldn't really come up with anything for this film. It's a solid watch in-between tasks. I don't think I'll be watching it again on my own anytime soon, but I commend it for what it on its own accomplished, and in today's world, that is so important for the independent filmmakers.

Giving it a 7 is more of a personal preference, because it's obviously not necessarily a film to be floored by, but in my opinion, does what it sets out to do well.
  • The actors and the photography was good. It just fell flat. 0 atmosphere. Same old plot, scarey doll, check. Things that go knock, knock check. Single mother, check. Nerdy paranormal investigators, check.

I really liked it! The acting was really good. It was better than some movies with 3 times its budget. Spooky and creepy. Not super original but well done especially for a youtube independent film.
  • You see what you want to see. But there's nothing actually there and that's what I saw. Because it's not a Rorschach test, it's a movie and movies are supposed to show you at least something.

Don't fall for the hype like I did. Even the mediocre reviews made it sound like it wouldn't be a complete waste of time, but it is. Even when they were pointing out, ad nauseam, something that was supposed to be there, I saw absolutely nothing. Nothing is there! Slight sounds? Maybe. Nothing scare in the very least happened in this clickbait movie.

    Please, move on.
  • Found this on YouTube and was quite surprised at how well the story was put together. It is a slow build but that's because it's a story and not an action flick. A great little supernatural ghost / invisible entity movie with decent acting some creepy moments and a proper ending. If this had been put out by Hollywood would have gave it a five but since it's independent and low budget I gave it a seven.
  • I happened to find "Rorschach" by random luck on YouTube of all places, when I was looking at some Rorschach scenes from "Watchmen". It said "scariest film online?" so that did catch my attention.

While this is definitely not among the most fast paced of horror movies, it is not among the most impressive or thrilling of horror movies either. Actually, there is very little happening throughout the course of the entire movie, and that was sort of a kill switch for me, because it made it extremely difficult to find the will to keep watching it. I did pull through to the end though.

"Rorschach" is a horror movie that builds on atmosphere and a sense of the viewer actually being present with the people in the movie. So if you like that sort of movie, you will find enjoyment in "Rorschach". However, to me, it felt more like a documentary than it actually felt like an actual movie. A very slow paced and uneventful documentary.

I will say that the acting in the movie was actually quite good, taking into consideration that limitation of the script and storyline that they had to work with.

For an atmospheric horror movie then "Rorschach" didn't really turn out to be impressive for me. Sure, there were some good moments, but the overall result wasn't a particularly scary and disturbing atmosphere.

All in all, "Rorschach" scores a less than average 4 out of 10 stars rating from me. It was a good enough production for a very limited budget, but the movie just didn't have much to offer or much of any appeal.
  • Saw this linked in a discussion on "Bloody Disgusting" so I thought I'd give it a watch and I have to say it's a pretty good movie in its own right, which is something of a surprise considering it's on YouTube! I will say without hesitation that it's better made and more entertaining than many theatrical release horror movies I've seen.

It features two skeptics who interview people who report paranormal occurrences in their home. This time around they travel out to the suburbs to meet a woman who feels there's something strange going on in her home, especially with respect to her young daughter. The skeptics are there to just document what she feels is happening, but as they do so and begin to witness events they also can't explain, they get pulled into the situation.

It's a bit rough around the edges but as a found-footage film that actually enhances its appeal. Remember though -- it's a *found footage paranormal horror film* so in order to be effective, it HAS to be slow burn. Don't watch it if that's not your thing -- it's pretty far from being non-stop action. But yeah, definitely watch it. I saw it on YouTube and that's where you'll find it too I assume.

By the way this is not one of those logrolling reviews by someone who knows the movie makers! I don't know these guys and this is my objective opinion.

A good film, all round performances were very good.

Yes the film was cheaply made, did it affect the overall movie, no.

It was a slow burn of a movie but done rather well.

When Patrick moved his head, you paid attention.

I thought the ending was good but 'I expected more.'

    Why?

This film could have gone for at least another twenty minutes, no I would not have wanted an explanation but the ending seemed rushed and apart from that the film was very good.

Overall a very good film, well worth a watch but don't expect a fast paced film, lights out, silence and sit back and enjoy this one. I thought the only thing that let it down was what felt like a rushed ending.

Well done film makers and all the actors and actresses involved in this film much better than most big budget movies.
  • This definitely had potential, but ultimately it poops out and leaves you wishing you had written and directed it knowing you could've done better with an even lower budget.

Never really good, but never actually boring. The tension builds towards a nice climax. But should have been better. A good meh.
  • This film is an obvious attempt to follow in the documentary-style, 'reality' feel, success footsteps of (particularly the first) "Paranormal Activity" (2007) and, to a degree, "The Blair Witch Project" (1999)... the former of which I found the most scary, and the latter not especially. There is also a distinct resemblance to the far superior 1982 movie "The Entity" which, although not in the same documentary/reality style, is a far superior scary experience.

This - somewhat new - technique does work and does give a sense of authenticity and real scariness. However... it has to be done right and, although I suppose this attempt is okay, if the concept is used too often and as a matter of course then the effect may be lost to commonality... and can lead to a description of 'corny' through over-familiarity with what the director is trying to achieve.

Thus, with "Rorschach" employing this 'creative' filmmaking technique and copying the same old haunted-house storyline as has been done so many times before, a sense of mediocrity is what endows it as watchable, but really nothing special.

So, after much mulling over whether to award a 4 or a 5/10 rating, as I do like scary, hauntings movies and I didn't find it unwatchable (although very slow-paced) I was generous and gave the benefit of the doubt with a 5/10. However, after much retrospect, I'm afraid I really did have to downgrade my rating to a 4/10.

...and I STILL don't know what "Rorschach" is, or what it means!
  • Warning: Spoilers
Liked this film. Presumably the first of many in the story. Couple good scares and makes you think. No real resolution though.
  • All you need to know before watching Rorschach is it's about a mother who's hired a pair of paranormal investigators to either debunk or confirm her house being haunted. She and her young daughter have been experiencing strange events since the grandmother passed away.

This is a found footage film and a low budget one at that but the creativity and simplicity makes for a perfect mix of creepy, believable, effective horror.

Every detail is well thought out and executed that it's easy to get caught up in this D.I.Y haunted house story.

Hopefully other independent filmmakers will be inspired to break new ground with this genre instead of using the copy and paste formula which gives it a bad name.

I'm hardly a seasoned movie reviewer and I'm not as professional sounding as others in here. I'm simply going to give you my opinion straight as it is.

I came across this on YouTube, as I am always trying to find a decent FF movie. I read the reviews, all positive. I know reviews can be fake, but after looking at the favorable reviews on here, I thought "why not?" Well, here is my response to that.

Firstly, I just say that I agree with the majority that this movie does have an effective creep factor and I was immediately impressed with the realistic and natural acting. All involved presented a believable portrait. However, the portrait was not very notable. I'm a patient t person and after reading about the alleged great ending, I stuck it out. Waited and waited and then the end credits appeared! What?? Did I miss something? Relatively happy ending. No deaths. No climax. All I got was one of the investigators looking at a computer image of a little girl and what appears to be a face? Maybe? I'm still trying to figure out what was notable here, besides the acting and creep factor. I'm for slow burns, providing of course that I receive even a minor pay off. I will feted if maybe I had watched a butchered version which deliberately left out the good stuff, but alas...no. Nada. Zip.

I think the guy behind this is on the right track with his choice of actors and his ability to slowly create a creep factor and kudos to leaving out the annoying jump scares. However, there needs to be something other than doors slamming and a lackluster ending at best. Please, if there is Ron thing I missed, please let me know. But from where I'm currently sitting, 3 stars for acting and mood. Now we just need some substance:)
  • a no-budget haunted house mockumentary released directly to youtube, this is the cinematic equivalent of self-publishing

every horror fan knows the formula — a team of skeptic ghost hunters sets up shop in a supposedly haunted house in attempt to explain the strange phenomena afflicting a fearful family, only to be met with stranger and stranger occurrences as the story unfolds

it's nicely edited, not too shaky for the hand-held style, the dialogue feels more natural than scripted; the story is believable and manages to entertain without any jump scares, levitating beds or characters being thrown from one side of the house to another by unseen malevolent forces

it may not be the 'scariest film online', as the subtitle on the youtube upload suggests, but watching it alone in the dark at night, i did begin to feel a little apprehensive. this is an excellent effort for a budgetless feature film debut; i'll definitely be keeping an eye open for future projects by writer/director C.A. Smith
  • Nothing to complain about here! This is probably the most effective and scary no-budget found footage horror film I've ever seen.

The setting is fairly typical, but it manages to feel fresh and unique. It sets itself apart with clever story-telling, understated execution of scares, and shows immense restraint. The way the story unfolds feels very grounded and more inline with classic ghost stories (with a modern spin).

Fans of no-budget FF films will love this one! An instant indie horror classic.
  • Highly recommended. Genuinely has some moments that get your heart pumping. It definitely left me wanting more. If you are a found footage horror flick fan like myself, go in blind and enjoy the ride!
  • So, do treat yourself to a beautiful diamond in the rough. Go into it knowing nothing about it, and have yourself a creepy, 75 minute joyride! It's low-budget, but the heart that went into selling this modern haunted house tale is inspiring. It was obvious that every single person in front of and behind the camera were 100% committed to telling this story, making it hit on a personal, and truly scary level, but also conveying that they are having a blast doing it. It makes it a genuinely good time at a horror(ish) movie.
