Two feature films, three TV dramas, one children’s series, and one online project will share in $5.9 million of production funding from Screen Australia.
The projects include feature How To Please A Woman about a woman’s choice to take her all-male housecleaning business to a more intimate level; the previously announced ABC anthology drama series Fires, set during last summer’s devastating bushfires; Stan feature Gold, and a comedy about a single woman and her database of potential sexual partners in Spreadsheet for Viacom CBS.
Screen Australia’s head of content Sally Caplan said it was a testament to the resilience of the screen industry to have so many projects move into production during such a challenging period.
“It’s fantastic to kick off 2021 with such a great sample of the premium dramas that have been greenlit across the country,” she said.

As the Covid-19 pandemic approaches its one-year anniversary of ravaging the globe and disrupting workflows, PBS is coming into 2021 strong with a robust slate for what network president and CEO Paula Kerger calls one of its “brand-defining programs”: “Masterpiece.”
“When you ask people what they think about when they hear ‘PBS,’ many people will say ‘Masterpiece’ and in fact consistently it’s one of the most popular programs from an audience size standpoint on public television,” says Kerger. “A lot of people plan their Sunday nights around watching ‘Masterpiece’ live. In this era of on-demand, the fact that people think of ‘Masterpiece’ as not only a lovely viewing experience, but more of an event also speaks to the place that it holds in our schedule.”
Kicking off the new year with “Elizabeth Is Missing” on Jan. 3, Glenda Jackson’s first “Masterpiece” project since “Elizabeth R” in 1972, and moving into a new flagship series,...

What fun it would be to sit with Melissa McCarthy's Lee Israel and Richard E. Grant's Jack Hock in Julius.
After covering Victor/Victoria last week, we got to thinking about that great sub-section of the “gay best friend” trope - The Gay Accomplice. Often a personal friend, the Gay Accomplice loves to come up with big schemes and be at the center of mischief. The friendship between the protagonist and the Gay Accomplice can exist before the scheme, but often times the friendship starts to revolve around their shared grift. Immediately, Richard E. When it came to scoring “Herself,” composer Natalie Holt and director Phyllida Lloyd soon realized that less was more. The Amazon film stars Clare Dunne, who also co-wrote the script, as Sandra, a mother of two who leaves her abusive husband to start a new life with her daughters. When the housing system fails her, she decides to build her own house.
“I was asked to join the film because I had scored an Irish TV series and Phyllida really liked kind of the melodic, slightly Irish-sounding music I had done with that because I’m a violinist, and it was quite sort of stringy and emotional,” Holt tells Gold Derby during our Meet the Experts: Film Composers panel (watch above). “So I think we were kind of initially going to do more of a leading score, which got quite stripped back because I think we decided we wanted to...

Up to $20,000 in development funding will be given to an “extraordinary” documentary project as part of a new partnership between Film Victoria and Universal Pictures Content Group.
Applications are now open for the Big Picture initiative, which is available to both experienced documentary filmmakers and emerging storytellers who are yet to attain their first screen credit.
The initiative calls for “compelling stories with global appeal” to follow in the footsteps of films such as Three Identical Strangers and Marianne & Leonard, which were both acquired and distributed by Universal.
Filmmakers with special access to a person or realm in the areas of music, crime, and sport – reminiscent of Conor McGregor: Notorious and the Film Victoria-supported feature documentary, Mystify: Michael Hutchence – are encouraged to apply, with other subject matter to also be considered.
One project suitable for theatrical distribution will be selected for development funding of up to $20,000.

Back in July, when every cinema around the country was shut, Sue Maslin took a leap: she committed to a three month marketing and P&a campaign for feature documentary Brazen Hussies.
Today the film distributed via Maslin’s Film Art Media stands at $103,000 at the box office.
Directed by Catherine Dwyer and produced by Philippa Campey and Andrea Foxworthy, Brazen Hussies follows the Women’s Liberation Movement in Australia, piecing together archival footage, photographs, memorabilia and personal accounts from activists.
Reaching this point theatrically has been the result of a platform release, driven by a 11-woman team, and founded on grassroots campaigning, targeted publicity (led by Nicole Hurren) and strong word-of-mouth.
It’s the kind of campaign Maslin argues has been almost impossible for years, given the dominance of Hollywood blockbusters and a mindset that opening weekend is everything.

Tripping with Nils Frahm is having its world premiere on Mubi on December 3, 2020.With Nils Frahm's new concert film premiering today, the German musician, who scored Sebastian Schipper's Victoria and the multi-screen Cate Blanchett art work Manifesto, has generously shared a list of his favorite film music. Featuring scores by Miles Davis (Elevator to the Gallows), Eleni Karaindrou (Eternity in a Day), Vincent Gallo (Buffalo 66), and Air (The Virgin Suicides), the selection is eclectic and inspiring, cutting across genres, decades, and music styles. Frahm writes:"I have always respected and admired filmmakers. I believe no other type of artist generally works harder than the director. A good director is like a great musician, since films are like long songs or albums, only even more complicated.
One could add: a musician is even more like a filmmaker, so his or her compositions respect the art of storytelling, timing, and the change of atmosphere.

Hard as it is to believe with everything going on right now, but Christmas is only about five weeks away, and the streaming market is already looking crowded. The following contains spoilers for The Boys season 2.
On the surface, Amazon’s popular superhero series The Boys is a dark inversion of the Marvel Cinematic Universe, a profane, uber-violent world in which corruption, blackmail, and corporate greed rule the day rather than truth, justice, and the American way. Despite their super status, the show’s heroes are often depicted as selfish, morally reprehensible, and obsessed with their fame rather than interested in doing much in the way of saving the world.
Although the show certainly has moments where it feels like little more than a parody of our current superhero obsessed culture, The Boys is smart and insightful as a whole, tackling complicated and messy issues like the rise of extremism in America, the perils of celebrity culture, the risks of unchecked capitalism and more.
So, it probably shouldn’t come as such a shock when it’s the...

Hell hasn’t quite frozen over on the Vancouver set of Marvel’s Helstrom but it’s close. A chill can be felt even inside the fabricated walls of St. Teresa’s Church as Tom Austen, who plays the titular Daimon Helstrom, sits down to talk with the press. It’s February and the show is months from its release date but Austen is already wearing the classic “Marvel leading man undercover” look, with a logo-less black hat atop his head. He’s prepared to discuss many aspects of Marvel’s first horror series, chief among them: just how much fun it is to set things on fire.
“I love the stuff with fire. I would say like over 90 percent of the fire-work that we’ve done has been practical. If there’s fire and Daimon’s standing by it then I’m standing by it. Which has been quite...

Sneak Peek "Victoria" actress Jenna Coleman, currently filming the upcoming BBC/Netflix thriller "Serpent", in the October 2020 issue of "Tatler" magazine, wearing Chanel, Oscar de la Renta and Jimmy Choo, photographed by Claire Rothstein:

"I mean, how on earth you manage it in this industry, I have no idea. Hopefully that will maybe be faced sometime soon: sets with more crèches for children, things like that. I can’t quite comprehend how that would possibly work, but I would definitely like children one day.
"As you get older, you realize there's no point in trying to control certain aspects. You have to roll with the punches.

The Witcher Season 2 has cast Basil Eidenbenz for the role of Eskel, replacing the previously tapped Thue Ersted Rasmussen.
Swiss actor Eidenbenz will fill the role of Eskel, which was vacated by Rasmussen over rescheduling issues attributed to Covid-19, reports Deadline. Pertinently, Netflix’s The Witcher was among an entire industry-wide slate of productions that halted back in March as Covid escalated to a pandemic level; an occurrence that leaves the series with a lingering issue upon its recent return, since Rasmussen had been filming scenes as Eskel starting in late February before the early-March shutdown. Consequently, the recasting of the character with Eidenbenz calls for reshoots.

“The Witcher” has recast the upcoming role of Eskel with actor Basil Eidenbenz, Variety has confirmed.
In February, Netflix originally announced that actor Thue Ersted Rasmussen would be taking on the role of the fellow Witcher in the Henry Cavill-starring series. However, Rasmussen had to drop out of “The Witcher” due to rescheduling conflicts caused by the coronavirus pandemic.
Eidenbenz, a Swiss actor, has previously appeared in the British historical drama “Victoria,” “The Athena” and had a role in “The Favourite” starring Olivia Colman and Emma Stone. He will play Eskel, the longtime friend and colleague of main character Geralt of Rivia (Cavill) portrayed in the “Witcher” novels and popular video game.
The addition of Eskel in season two of “The Witcher” was announced alongside several other key castings. Other new cast members include “Game of Thrones” star Kristofer Hivju as Nivellen, Yasen Atour (“Young Wallender”) as Coen, Agnes Bjorn as Vereena,...

Netflix has recast the role of Eskel for Season 2 of “The Witcher.”
Basil Eidenbenz will now play the role originally held by Thue Ersted Rasmussen, who dropped out earlier this week due to Covid-19 rescheduling.
Like star Henry Cavill’s Geralt of Rivia, the role of Eskel is a witcher, a.k.a a monster hunter, in Polish author Andrzej Sapkowski’s “Witcher” novels which the Netflix series is based on. The show follows Geralt as he “finds his place in a world where people often prove more wicked than beasts. But when destiny hurtles him toward a powerful sorceress, and a young princess with a dangerous secret, the three must learn to navigate the increasingly volatile Continent together,” according to Netflix.
Rasmussen was one of the new cast members Netflix announced for Season 2 in February, and had already filmed some scenes as Ersekl in late February and March before production was shut down.

Exclusive: Basil Eidenbenz (Victoria) will play popular Witcher Eskel in recasting for the second season of Netflix’s hit series The Witcher. Thue Ersted Rasmussen, who had been originally cast in the role heading into Season 2 and filmed scenes in late February and early March before production was shut down due to the escalating coronavirus pandemic, announced this week that he had to leave the show “due to the rescheduling because of Covid-19.”
Rasmussen was one of seven new cast members announced by Netflix on Feb. 21 in conjunction with the Season 2 start of production in the U.K. Just three weeks later, The Witcher became the first major TV show filmed in the UK to be grounded by the pandemic. The same day, cast member Kristofer Hivju tested positive for the virus.

Doctor Strange: Triet Gets Tricky with Autofiction Affair
Reuniting with Virginie Efira, the lead from her 2016 sophomore breakout Victoria (aka In Bed with Victoria), director Justine Triet presents a woman with significant boundary issues in her pursuit for professional fulfillment with Sibyl. Blurred lines are part and parcel here in an oddly toned comedy/drama which borrows, of course, the name of the infamous 1973 Flora Rheta Schreiber study on a troubled young woman diagnosed with multiple personalities.
While Triet’s protagonist doesn’t suffer the same, it’s instead a woman in the existential throes of redefining her life as she attempts to leave behind her role as a psychotherapist to work full time on a novel, the career she desired a decade prior.…...

Diana Rigg, star of The Avengers, Extras, Doctor Who and Victoria, died yesterday at the age of 82. The actress had a long and glittering career on stage and in TV and film, but most contemporary fans will remember her as Lady Olenna Tyrell in Game of Thrones, for which she received multiple Emmy nominations. Even amongst the show’s motley collection of schemers and backstabbers, she was one of the best.
Her most memorable achievement was the Purple Wedding, which came during the celebrations after the hated Joffrey Baratheon married Margaery Tyrell. While the room was distracted by some pigeons flying out of a pie, she slipped poison into Joffrey’s wine, killing him in an excruciatingly painful manner. Her role in this remained a secret right up until the moment of her death when she revealed to a dumbfounded Jaime Lannister that she was the culprit. She died like a boss,...

Film Victoria CEO Caroline Pitcher is committed to growing the state’s screen sector next financial year but, longer-term, she worries about the sustainability of production.
“Over the next 6-12-18 months we will see a good news story with a lot of production,” she said in a webinar with Screen Producers Australia CEO Matt Deaner.
“Therefore the numbers and the employment will look good because so much production that had been supported was on hold. It will look like a boom, but in fact it will be a house of cards.”
Asked to elaborate by Deaner, she said the options paper and Federal Government support will be crucial in sustaining the industry over the long term, with a policy framework that may last for 10-20 years.

It’s common for channels to make hyperbolic claims when introducing a new show, but when Sky’s drama heads describe Little Birds as ‘not like anything else on telly,’ they’re not wrong.
The drama’s six 45-minute episodes inspired by a series of erotic short stories combine to form a lavish period melodrama with few points of TV comparison. Little Birds is an exploration of female sensuality and liberation set against a backdrop of colonial violence and simmering rebellion. It’s a provocative, heightened, almost cartoonish fairy tale about struggles for personal and political independence. It’s colourful and stylised, tongue-in-cheek yet earnest, with a killer 1950s soundtrack.
Take a look at the trailer:
If that appealed, then here’s everything you need to know:

‘Babyteeth’. (Photo: Lisa Tomasetti)
Alex White and Jan Chapman went to see Rita Kalnejais’ hit play Babyteeth at Sydney’s Belvoir St Theatre on the same night back in 2012. By interval, the two had made a beeline to each other: they knew it had to be adapted for screen.
At that stage, White had already been working for Chapman for several years. For some time, The Piano producer had been trying to help her find her first feature – White having produced successful shorts such as Trespass and Florence Has Left the Building.
“Jan was going ‘This is it, this is it’,” White tells If.
Both were drawn to the play’s “raw, visceral, irreverent and heartbreaking” tone and dialogue. The play was set on a revolve, with distinctive scenes and sound design, allowing White to clearly sense how it would feel on screen.

If the only way filmmakers could process life in quarantine was scripted Zoom conversations, the art form might be screwed. “Homemade,” a wondrous and mostly satisfying anthology of 17 short films made over the past two months around the world, proves the opposite. A dense collection of inquisitive, unpredictable and often life-affirming responses to the pandemic from some of the most astute directors working today,
Whereas many anthology projects can feel like mixed bags by default, “Homemade” has been tailor-made to fit its Netflix-sanctioned format, with shorts divided up into chapters that range from four to 11 minutes, and few that feel extraneous. As a diverse assemble of style and substance from active filmmakers with unique sensibilities, it doubles as an overview of international cinema and entry point to many of its strongest active voices, while giving them the opportunity to capture a unique moment in the history of the medium,...

Discovering Sy Rogers was a big deal for me. As a gay kid in Pensacola, Fl, I learned early on that my “same-sex attraction”––as it’s often called in conservative Christian churches––was not acceptable in my community. Rogers previously identified as trans and led international ministries based on the idea that if God can change Rogers from being transgender, he can also change one’s homosexuality. This assumes it’s wrong to be gay and that being transgender is even worse. But I didn’t want to be gay, so I walked in Rogers’ footsteps. For the first half of the 2010s, I believed ex-gay theology and it took the second half of the decade in therapy to unravel it. Telling my story is not easy, but the truth is more powerful than pretending my past never happened.

We present the brand-new trailer for the Forum entry Victoria, directed by Sofie Benoot, Liesbeth De Ceulaer and Isabelle Tollenaere. Belgian filmmakers Sofie Benoot, Liesbeth De Ceulaer and Isabelle Tollenaere have world-premiered their docu-fiction hybrid Victoria in the 70th Berlinale's Forum section, and now the film's production company, Caviar, and international sales agent, Czech firm Filmotor, have readied a new trailer for the film. In the Mojave Desert, not far from Los Angeles, lies the unfinished city of California City. Lashay T Warren (25) left behind his turbulent past in La to build a new life within this grid of thousands of crumbled streets. “It started with an anecdote, a story we picked up somewhere, about a city in a desert, California City, which hadn’t (yet) fulfilled its promise to become the third-largest city in California. Indiewire describes this as "Jóhannsson’s own artistic riff on the avant-garde style of Koyaanisqatsi," although it seems to be something else quite unique. There's not much to this teaser so far, but have a look anyway. I am certainly curious...
