Pakistan-born comedian Kumail Nanjiani and grad student Emily Gardner fall in love but struggle as their cultures clash. When Emily contracts a mysterious illness, Kumail finds himself forced to face her feisty parents, his family's expectations, and his true feelings.
Emily and her mother wear the same necklace through most of the film: it's a gold pendant that has a sun on one side and the word "love" engraved on the other side.

When Holly Hunter is signing papers to discharge her daughter from the hospital, she checks the time on her watch by looking at the bottom of her wrist. However, the face of the watch is on the top of her wrist, so she wouldn't be able to see the time.
In the beginning of the end credits, photos of shown of the real-life inspiration behind the Emily character, as well as the wedding between Emily V. Gordon and Kumail Nanjiani and Nanjiani's real-life parents.
