If the mark of a true cinephile is how accurately they quote a Stanley Kubrick film, it’s no surprise that Errol Morris takes the cake. The Oscar-winning documentarian behind “The Thin Blue Line” and “The Fog of War” has a new movie coming out: “The B-Side,” about large-format Polaroid portrait photographer Elsa Dorfman. Morris recently regaled The Daily Beast with with memories of interviewing Donald Trump 15 years ago, and recalled a certain scene from “Dr. Strangelove.”

Independent Lens takes a look at the impact drone warfare is having both on those targeted and the people operating these new battlefield tools. In an episode titled National Bird, the show features interviews with three former soldiers involved in the drone program, a former intelligence officer and family of those directly affected by strikes. Perhaps the most disturbing and interesting issue is the psychological impact on the operators. They are not allowed to talk to anyone about their work and that includes their psychologists, something that is surely bound to end badly one day. The moral issues surrounding drone...read more...

National Bird follows the dramatic journey of three whistleblowers who are determined to break the silence around one of the most controversial current affairs issues of our time: the secret U.S. drone war. At the center of the film are three U.S. military veterans. Plagued by guilt over participating in the killing of faceless people in foreign countries, they decide to speak out publicly, despite the possible consequences.Their stories take dramatic turns, leading one of the protagonists to Afghanistan where she learns about a horrendous incident. But her journey also gives hope for peace and redemption. The film also explores the way the military uses the drone program- with commercials that often closely resemble video games- to recruit young people. Executive produced by Errol Morris,...

★★★☆☆ Drone warfare is widely condemned on the basis of its relative safety and detachment from the horrors of combat. If you're going to kill someone, you should at least have the steel to look them in the eye while you do it. This maxim is turned on its head a little by Sonia Kennebeck's chilling documentary National Bird, which examines the personal ramifications of this most impersonal bloodshed. This might seem counterintuitive, but it comes to make total sense as she follows three whistleblowers trying to come to terms with guilt, post traumatic stress, and the threat of espionage charges as they concurrently attempt to educate the American people.

This weekend saw Sony release two awards hopefuls; their directors have each received Oscar nominations for Best Foreign Language Film, and produced international blockbusters. With that kind of buildup, it’s unsurprising that both Ang Lee’s “Billy Lynn’s Long Halftime Walk” and Paul Verhoeven’s “Elle” had strong openings. Both are welcome in a rebounding specialized world, where “Moonlight” is finding wider audiences and “Loving” continues to show promise.
Opening
“Billy Lynn’s Long Halftime Walk” (Sony) – Metacritic: 53; Festivals include: New York 2016
$120,300 in 2 theaters; PTA: $60,150
Ang Lee’s latest effort came with expectations of high-end performance, and its two initial dates showed major strength. The Lincoln Square Theater in New York and Arclight Hollywood in Los Angeles presented the story of an Iraq war veteran’s return home (based on an acclaimed 2003 novel) in the intended 4K 3D 120 fps format, and audiences responded.

Disney continued its record-breaking year this weekend as 2016 became the studio's best year at the domestic box office ever. Contributing to that success, of course, is the studio's latest Marvel Studios release, Doctor Strange, which led the weekend box office for the second week in a row, contributing to a weekend in which the top twelve was up 56% compared to the same weekend last year. The weekend's success was a combination of strong holdovers such as Strange and fellow sophomore features Trolls and Hacksaw Ridge, along with newcomers including Arrival and Almost Christmas, all of which helped the top twelve combine for over $150 million. Dropping only 49% in its second weekend, Disney and Marvel's Doctor Strange delivered an impressive $43 million in its second weekend as the film's domestic gross climbs to over $153 million in just ten days of release. Among Marvel's single-character intro features this is the second fastest title to top $150 million domestically,...

This week writing “Recommended on a Friday” is a way of tempering myself before tackling this week’s newsletter, which will be some form of screed about the election. Depending on your reaction to the surreal and seismic week, you may or may not be in the mood to go to the movies. If you are, however, there’s a lot in theaters we can recommend. I’ll start with 25 New Face Sonia Kennebeck’s National Bird, a provocative, thoughtful and cinematically ambitious documentary about the U.S. Air Force’s drone warfare program that focuses on the impact the program has had on the […]...

Sonia Kennebeck’s National Bird is a humanistic look at those responsible for and affected by America’s divisive drone war program. Those working in drone warfare are thousands of miles removed from the destination of their attack, so National Bird is primarily placed in suburban America, away from the crimes at the film’s core. Through three former air force workers turned whistleblowers (and their victims), Kennebeck’s film is equally about an emotional and spatial disconnect. We do not interact with those we are affecting most – please feel free to draw your own parallels to current American politics here – and therefore the country can […]...

On the surface, “National Bird” is an effective and eye-opening documentary about the various political and moral harms of the U.S. drone program. Yet the real reason to see it lies in the way it insightfully and empathetically laments the fact that dehumanizing one’s “enemy” to the point of failing to even register them as human beings will in turn dehumanize the attacker. Once we go down the path of perceiving thousands of potentially innocent targets, children among them, as nothing but inconsequential blips on a screen, we’re already lost as a species.

Just a reminder that three major titles open today
Elle
France's Oscar entry, directed by notorious provocateur Paul Verhoeven (Basic Instinct, Showgirls, Turkish Delight, Black Book, etcetera) features screen icon Isabelle Huppert in arguably the crowning role of her inimitable career as a video game designer chillingly obsessed with uncovering the identity of her rapist. Reviewed. Expect an Oscar nomination or (crossing fingers) two. Reviewed.
[Opens today in New York. Wednesday in Los Angeles]
Arrival
Denis Villeneuve's (Sicario, Enemy) awesome thinking person's sci-fi epic about a curiously immobile alien invasion. The aliens have arrived but what do they want hovering in 12 locations over our world? An expert linguist (Amy Adams, wonderful) is recruited to communicate with them in this superbly executed drama. Reviewed. It's also perfect for this moment for this movie.
Arrival opens this weekend. I can't imagine a better moment to go see a humanity affirming sci-fi movie about overcoming what divides us.

After serving as an official selection of the Tribeca Film Festival and being screened in Berlinale’s Special section earlier this year, Sonia Kennebeck’s acclaimed drone warfare documentary, National Bird, finally gets the trailer treatment.
Following three interconnected whistleblowers’ dramatic journeys, all U.S. military veterans, as they take aim hoping to shatter preconceived notions surrounding the drone war, the Errol Morris and Wim Wenders-supported project has been hailed as a proper view into one of foreign policy’s thornier issues. As we said in our review, “Mixing talking heads and on-the-ground footage, National Bird is a vital film about the true cost of war, well-reported by Kennebeck.”
See the preview below (via Apple):

Calling for a national conversation that we ought to be having on the use of lethal force, National Bird considers all sides of the program, from those pulling the trigger from remote facilities to the collateral damage on the ground. Directed by Sonia Kennebeck, National Bird tells three interconnected stories, some of which are linked by defense attorney Jesselyn Radack, famed for her work with whistleblowers including Edward Snowden.
Heather is a combat vet and drone pilot who finds herself in an uncomfortable position: unable to get the help she needs, she speaks out, finding herself branded a traitor when she makes certain unclassified information public about the drone program. Suffering from Ptsd, she finds herself in an unfortunate maze when she seeks mental health services. She can only talk to a counselor with a security clearance and she can only talk with one of those approved for services through the Va.

An emblem of American foreign policy in the Obama era, so-called unmanned aerial vehicles allow nations to monitor and assassinate their enemies from thousands of miles away. Kennebeck interviews the operators and survivors of drone warfare in National Bird, her whistle-blowing documentary executive produced by Errol Morris and Wim Wenders. Below, Kennebeck discusses the ethical dilemmas of drone warfare, drones as a cinematic tool and how she found her remarkable subjects. Using the testimony of three courageous whistleblowers who worked on the Us drone programme, this documentary uncovers some disturbing truths about modern American warfare
This is a disturbing documentary which, through the testimonies of three courageous whistleblowers, sheds some daylight on the USA’s secret military drone programme. Directed by Sonia Kennebeck and executive-produced by Wim Wenders, National Bird weaves together the stories of the air force veterans Lisa, Daniel and Heather, all of whom have worked on the drones programme, gathering intelligence and tracking targets to be killed.
Then National Bird moves to Afghanistan, where the maimed survivors of a mistaken drone strike on unarmed civilians in February 2010, which killed 23 people, describe what happened when they were attacked. The juxtaposition of the appallingly gung-ho attitude of the drone operatives, re-enacted from a transcript of the event, and raw footage of the dead bodies (some children) returning to their anguished friends and family,...

“You shouldn’t have to stop your own people from killing civilians,” says a former military whistleblower in the documentary National Bird. More than just a documentary, National Bird is a scathing and clearly delineated expose on America’s use of drone warfare and the effects it has on both the victims of the attacks and the people operating the aircraft. Directed by Sonia Kennebeck and executive produced by Errol Morris and Wim Wenders, National Bird looks through the eyes of three whistleblowers – one man and two women – involved in the drone program at the real human damage done to operators and victims alike.
The film carts the experiences of the three whistleblowers and their different ways of dealing with the aftermath of their involvement in the drone program. One, an imagery analyst, suffers from Ptsd after participating in multiple drone attacks, first identifying targets and then body parts in the aftermath.
